Music is extremely important. Growing up, music always played a big role in my life. My soul works through music. It also helped me through extremely rough times in my life. When I was 7, I lost my little brother. I was mentally unstable during that period of time and music became the medicine to cure my broken soul. Losing my brother caused lots of trials and tribulations in my life. I started having suicidal thoughts and starting doing lots of things that to this day I regret. I felt like life was slowly giving up on me. I was riding home from school one day, and on the radio a song came on. “Jessica Reddy, Better”, was blasting through my mother’s speakers. Listening to the melody in her voice and the words that escaped her lips as she sang sent chills through my body. But, one part of that song stood out the most to me. She said, “ Life, it can leave you so bitter. But, you must believe that it gets better . It’s alright, dry your eyes, send a prayer to the sky. I know It’s hard to fight. But, you must believe that it gets better.” Her words spoke so much life into me. I went from being a depressed little girl to slowly but surely gaining back faith. Her words, her tone, the melody in her voice, and the lyrics she sang gave me hope, courage, and my sanity. That’s why this song played a major role in my life. Shortly after that downfall in my life, I started to engage in boys. Becoming a teenager, I wanted to not listen to my mother and get a boyfriend, being “ hot in

When I first began playing the clarinet, eight years ago, I would have never expected it to impact my life in such a significant way, but it did and continues to each year. Playing an instrument is a way of self-expression, both individually and as a group; bringing musicians together to create a work of art. I have experienced this throughout all eight years as a musician with students from my school, in both concert band and marching band, students from surrounding schools, during band fest, junior district band, and district band, as well as members of my church, at worship services. I believe music gives people a sense of hope that they don't have to feel like they're the only one's going through things. Music can express more than words and it gives people a constant when their world seems to be chaotic. It's something some people need in their life and to be who they are and go on day by day.
