The Importance Of Personal Accountability

The last element I want to discuss because I believe it is the most important concerning personal responsibility, is attitude. Possessing a positive attitude holds everything together. “Attitude represents that connection between mind, heart, and body” (Ursiny, DeMoss, & Ybaben, 2008). You can possess every other kind of quality and apply whatever kind of strategy you like but without a positive attitude you will get nowhere. Every day we come across conflict and deal with negative people who will try to make you feel less attractive, less intelligent, and lesser of just about everything. This kind of negativity spreads like wild fire. Refrain from too much exposure to this and keep in mind other people do not dictate the outcome of your life. Positive attitudes do not come easy though. It is a training process of the mind. Every day, the moment you open your eyes tell yourself this will be a good day full of learning and meeting new people and ask yourself “how will I better myself and those around me today?” Keep this type of thinking in mind and be the positive influence where ever you are and people to take notice. They will be more likely to help you, want to work with you and be wherever you are. Even if for nobody else, you owe it to yourself to have a positive attitude and to enjoy all endeavors of life.

I as a Soldier firmly believe that accountability is highly important in the Army for these following reasons:

In conclusion, Personal responsibility is composed of many tools that will allow an individual or team to succeed. Simply because it is, the force that keeps an individual on course with the end goal, using these tools will enable inherent success. The practice of setting goals can help one to keep focused on the task-a-hand, by knowing what goal a person is working at.

Mission accomplishment demands that officers and NCOs work together to advise, assist and learn from each other. Responsibilities fall into two categories: command and individual. Individual responsibility as a noncommissioned officer means you are accountable for your personal conduct. Soldiers in the Army have their own responsibilities. For example, if you write a check at the commissary, it is your responsibility to have sufficient funds in the bank account to cover the check. Individual responsibility cannot be delegated, it belongs to the soldier that wrote the check. Soldiers are accountable for their actions, to their fellow soldiers, to their leaders, to their unit and to the United States Army. As a leader you must ensure that your soldiers understand clearly their responsibilities as members of the team and as representatives of the Army.

Accountability without security is definitely not the right answer to a successful business or working environment, take for example; your NCO or boss leaves you in charge of a simple task of moving one piece of equipment to another location without help. While your undergoing this process you leave your previous location where it is unsafe meaning anyone has access to it. Anything could happen within that span of time that your absent from your workspace. When you finish your task and head back to your work area, you discover something missing... Organizations, including the one I work for, often talk about employees needing to be accountable and responsible for their actions. However, Dr. Stephan’s definition of accountability as, “Being judged and measured on whether you are meeting some standard of performance,” is a powerful one and brings to light the flaws of simply using accountability in isolation to influence change within an organization. I personally have trouble buying completely into the idea that every single thing that happens to you in your life is just the results of choices you have made. However, I do strongly believe that even though you may not have control over everything that happens to you, you do have control over how you react to situations and events.
