The Importance Of Reading And Writing Skills

Writing is one of the most important skills that I have learned throughout my years in school. I have learned that no matter how much I love or hate it, writing is a necessity; I might as well try to be good at it. Writing has been in my life for many years. There are many types of writing, educational writing and personal writing are two that I will mention in this essay. I have learned how to allow writing to help me in my daily life. When I began writing I hated it, however, I have learned the many uses of it, and it has become a huge part of my life.

The significance of learning to read and write is the ability for a person to express themselves to others by communicating vocally or through writing. The communication needs to be of substance in order for it to mean anything. Reading induces the ability to learn information one did not previously know. With ability of new words and their meaning within your arsenal, gives you the ability to attack or defend your point of view. With these supporting capabilities it enables you to take and stand for what you believe and want to express.

Research types of writings at college helped me strengthen my writing skills because as I started to research on a topic, not only I learned more in depth, but also learned how to draw further connections outside of the course(class). I want to improve my writings in making correct connections and organizing ideas. Sometimes, I misunderstand the readings and end up making the wrong connections. In fact, my ideas are all over the place whenever I try to make connections, which does not clearly show that I have understood the assignment. These mistakes often led to downside of my grades. The most useful advice I received that helped me improve my writing is that “the word ‘writing’ actually means to put things together, so don’t be afraid of express your opinions in your writing your opinion.” This encourage me not to be afraid of writing and expressing my opinions.

Students should care about learning how to write at the college level because it is part of the foundation of learning how to comprehend readings. Learning to understand any type of readings can help in the workplace as well as college. This is because the reader will be able to fully the grasp the idea of what is being told to to them. Therefore, the best way to learn this skill is being able to be a writer that knows how to “influence a student's comprehension”(Alhabri 2). This could also help in the workplace because you know what to do in order to get the job done effectively.

Having the right writing skills sets a person up for success in life. Life, in terms of the business world, is based on two things: math and writing. Not being able to do both of those puts a person behind, and stops them from getting a job that is worth having. Both The Writing Revolution by Peg Tyre and A Hope in the Unseen by Ron Suskind emphasizes that without the right writing skills, an individual will be less successful. Writing should be taught in every class because it will be handy for any job they choose, and because it will be used everyday of their life.

I would say that I have the level of reading and writing skills expected from someone who graduated from an average public high school. Thus, though we have learned about the distinction between primary and secondary sources, it was not until I started taking AP courses that we truly had to synthesize something out of them. My only interactions with these outside sources were in my history classes, not my literature classes. In AP United States History, we would have to practice with what are called Document Based Questions (DBQ’s), where we would be presented with about 8 primary and secondary sources and then have to write a timed paper on an argument. Learning how to effectively grab my audience’s attention is a big task for me to tackle this semester. As previously learned in week one’s archived workshop “The Hallmarks of Effective Writing,” the basic components of what effective writing strives to convey are “awareness of purpose, audience, and form” (Hood, 2012, slide 5). For example, if I am writing a paper for a topic that would be intended for children, I cannot use sophisticated vocabulary that the audience may not understand. If the audience is unable to decipher the vocabulary words in the essay, they are more likely to lose interest in reading the paper. Sentence structure, grammar, and learning how to effectively reach my audience have affected my ability to communicate effectively in the past due to the difficulty involved in maintain proper writing etiquette and keeping the reader’s

Learning how to read and write was a challenging task for me as a kid. I believe I couldn’t read until the second grade and that was embarrassing. Being a slow learner made me insecure, which hindered me from building the confidence I needed to succeed and get pass identifying with having a disability. Instead, I was enrolled into a special ed class that I had to leave my regular class to attend. During my special ed class all I could think about was how I couldn’t wait to get back to my regular class so I didn’t have to tell any of my classmate where I was. Therefore, my focus unfortunately wasn’t on learning, like it should have been!

There are many ways to strengthen one’s writing. The best way for writers to optimize their writing is through understanding their audience. In the essay “Determining Your Writing Style” (n.d.),

Writing makes possible to us expressing in a paper what we cannot communicate by talking. For this reason, the writer must make his composition readable and understandable in order to get the idea by the reader of what he is attempting to communicate. This requires a whole writing process that I have experienced thus far this semester in my English Composition I Honors Course. I have recognized what my strengths and weaknesses in writing are. So that, focusing more on my weaknesses than my strengths will help me to improve much more my writing skills by the end of the semester.

A learner’s ability to communicate effectively through writing to his/her target audiences is a major prerequisite for academic success. It is also a major pillar of success in one’s career across all areas of practice. Even though, writing clearly is critical to one’s academic and career success, I have not always loved writing. In fact, for a long time I despised writing. At one point, I had a feeling that my writings skills were bound to remain stagnated throughout my life. However, time has proven that I was wrong. My attitude and outlook towards virtually all genres of writing has changed positively. The various helpful methods I have been exposed to by my English teachers through different grades have helped me to improve not only my comprehension and interpretation skills but also my writing skills in general. I contend that, the improvement of my comprehension skills and appreciating the importance of thinking clearly has facilitated the improvement of my writing skills.

To write well, there are only two things you absolutely must do: read and write: “If you don’t have time to read, you don’t have the time (or the tools) to write” (King 147). I believe that reading and writing would not exist without each other because they rely on one another hand-in-hand. In order to write well, not only must you read well, but you must read widely. Through reading you will gain knowledge, extend your vocabulary, and see different styles of writing. When reading, you see things that remind you of what you should be doing or things you should avoid while you write. You can learn many lessons while you read that will help you when you apply it to writing. To become a better writer, reading a lot will help you get different guidance, to be able to look outside the box, and to enhance your knowledge. Although this advice is plain and simple, it is the straightforward advice

Having the right education of writing, reading and critical thinking is vital in life and an order to have a successful career financial success. It skills that are used every day in life and help us become a better person. There are many reasons why you have learn how to have the right information of how use this skill so you do not fail .

Reading and writing are two of the most important tools in my life, because without them I would not have an education. They form the basis of a class; for example, completing a lab in chemistry would not be possible without following a written lab procedure. These two skills are taught at such a young age, and as education advances students must continue to strive to reach a higher level. I can remember in elementary school, we were always pushed to reach the next reading level once we had successfully mastered the one we were on. It was always a competition for my sister and I to be at a higher level, I usually won. Even though I was excelling in reading it was the complete opposite for writing. It is something that has never come easy

Reading and writing are both important; you can’t have one without the other. They are skills that are increased constantly due to little things that most times are not noticed. Whether it is from a book to a poem, there will always be a way that it helps out your school performance. Reading and writing in general only helps absorb information, and enhance leisure or school related writing tasks. It has also made life itself so much easier because reading and writing are so beneficial for school and for life. How much you read and write today, will somehow affect your future job, family, position, or even your salary.
