However, one of the most popular forms to share and demonstrate our opinions as citizens are marches and protests. Parades and marches were indeed a from the Progressives used to publicize and convince many about their efforts. Despite that, many of these parades, especially in Washington D.C. on March 3, 1913 faced violent responses that included in the assault of many women. This was not always the case. For example, a nonviolent mass direction action is the March on Washington on August of 1963. This march was part of the Civil Rights act movement. This march led from Washington monumental to the Lincoln Memorial and consisted of songs, chants and speeches of civil right leaders that fought for jobs and freedom. Some of the most notable speeches that came out of this march was Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I have a dream speech”, which is known to promote racial justice and equality. The previous examples, demonstrated marches and protests for social reforms, but not all marches are related social reforms. Some marches like the Anti- War march in 2003 that voices the opposition of the invasion of Iraq. More than 10 million people in over 600 cities joined these efforts to voice their discontent with the Bush Administration, but many felt and still feel ignored by the administration. In this case, no agreement or compromise could be reached. In our current society, the rise of racial unrest led to various marches such as the Anti- Trump and May Day marches. Marches and protests are a very popular way Americans and citizens from all over the country still use to voice their opinions. They are planned with the goal to lead to social reform or social change. However not all marches end up being nonviolent such as the March on Washington. For years there has been an ongoing battle with gun safety laws throughout America. When Sandy Hook occurred, and the Las Vegas massacre, what about the two hundred and twelve school shootings that happened in America this year; we’re only in February (Cook). You would think after Virginia Tech they would have solved the problem then and none of this would have happened. Recently there was a mass shooting in a high school in Florida, this has caused an uproar leading student victims to protest and fight for gun laws. We are tired of not being able to feel safe at school or a concert. Our government is not doing enough for our safety, that is why we should come together as one force and fight for gun control.

On May 18, 2018 there was a school shooting at Santa Fe High School making it the 22nd one this year. The 3rd within a one week span. With each shooting happening more frequently and being covered by the media more we find ourselves becoming desensitised. Some people start to lose hope with the movement because every time they open their social media there is thoughts and prayers, but no action. Paige Curry, a student at Santa Fe was asked if she was surprised by that something like this could happen at her school? She replied with a “No” then said, “It’s been happening everywhere. I’ve always kind of felt like eventually it was going to happen here, too.” Curry had become so desensitized by gun violence because of its frequency and prominent place on media. Although some teenagers have become less sensitive to school shootings we also find ourselves with others who see the constant coverage of shootings and become enraged. With the help of media and platforms like Twitter tragedies have become more spread showing their frequency in our nation. Upsetting people who have never been affected directly by gun violence. Guns on campus lead to violent shootings. Students with guns on campus are a threat to everyone. They cause others to feel unsafe and grab everyone’s attention. If a student argues with a fellow student and they both disagree something could go wrong. “Concealed carry laws have the potential to dramatically increase violent on college and university campuses” (Dickerson). If a school bans students to carry concealed weapons on campus there will be fewer chances of a shooting taking a place. Students participate in certain activities

The March on Washington took place Wednesday, August 28, 1963 in Washington D.C. The march was generally for jobs and freedom but specifically it was for voting rights protection, public school desegregation and federal programs to trained unemployment workers. When it first began, many of the people was socializing about possibly what’s taken place but honestly no one actually know for sure because of how many people actually showed up and involved themselves in the movement. There was many people that came out to support as well as being apart of the march. You could tell by everyone demeanor that marching on washington were something they wanted to participate in without any force because they most likely felt that marching on washington was significant to them. After, witnessing a few people,you could conclude that participating in the march showed the genuine attitude of the people due to their actions they presented. You would that since so many people showed up that it would be complicated to get everyone’s attention but they were able to follow directions even though they made it to certain areas early then they predicted. I do not think any of the leaders that help corporate this event actually knew how many people was going to show up and take a stand with them but I’m sure they expected the best.

Imagine you’re watching the news and hear of a mass shooting at a local college. You suddenly realize a family member or someone who’s very near and dear to you attends that institution and you rush to grab your phone to call and see if they’re okay. As you furiously dial their number over and over again you glance at the television screen and see their name in the list of people who were critically wounded or killed. Now imagine being the parent of a child in whom you drove to school that day, but later received a call informing you there was a shooting at the school and your child was amongst those killed. Sadly, you read and hear about these stories all the time, mass shootings, and gun violence. Guns and instances of gun violence aren’t new to American society, but there has definitely been a significant increase in these last few decades. Instances of gun violence that include mass shootings in theaters, schools and college campuses have been on the rise and it will only continue to rise unless proper actions are taken. Because of this, stricter gun control laws need to be placed into effect.

Imagine being in a place where you are completely defenseless against another person in a school surrounded by many students and teachers where one hardly knows the intentions of others. People can be unpredictable and when one least expects it there is danger right around the corner. Gun control is an issue everybody has an opinion on how it is important, potentially threatening, and present in modern society. While many feel that providing teachers with handguns can lead to a harmful environment. Others feel that having a teacher who has the right state of mind to carry a handgun is better than having a complete stranger or student because no one wants to go to school in fear of a possible attack. By giving teachers firearms this would provide educators and students more security and overall safety.
