The call to evangelize in Matthew 28:19 is a command. The disciples accepted Jesus as Lord, and had brought themselves under his rule and were indebted to do whatever he asked (Erickson, p. 972). The disciples were to carry the gospel message everywhere, to all nations and to every race. The disciples could not, of course, complete this exhausting task on their own. As they won new converts, those converts would in turn evangelize to others who were lost (Erickson, p. 974). Erickson notes that if the church is to be faithful to its Lord and bring joy to His heart, it must be involved in bringing the gospel to all nations and races. This would include people whom we may tend to dislike. Discipling it goes beyond our immediate sphere of contact and influence. In a very real sense, church planting, church extension, local evangelism, or, and world missions are all the same discipling task. The only difference in these type of discipling is it distance from the radius of the disciples (Erickson, p. 974). The next major purpose of the church is the edification of Christians. Even though Jesus laid greater stress on evangelism, the edification of believers is a logical priority. Paul frequently spoke of the edification of the church. In Ephesians 4:12, Paul indicates that God has given various gifts to the church so His people would be equipped for works of service, and the body of Christ would be built up (Erickson, p. 974).
