All I really remember was getting a text one day saying, “Hey, we bought four tickets to Branson, and you’re coming with us to see Moses!” Thankfully in a month (or so)’s notice. But was I complaining? Pre-paid hotel room, food, and live theater, musical action? I was definitely down for it. One of my best friends, Annica, and her parents had invited me to go with them for a weekend long stay at Branson, Missouri, during last year’s spring break, to watch a live stage production of Moses at Sight and Sound Theaters. Sight and Sound Theaters is a religious based business re-telling the historical events of the Bible as well as making “the Bible come to life”. I was so ecstatic, I couldn't even sleep that night. But knowing I would be …show more content…
Sure, the wait for a table was long, at least twenty minutes, but it was all worth it when, after another twenty minutes, the appetizers had reached our table. After leaving an empty plate of what I supposed was salad, the actual food we had ordered arrived, but I was too full to eat more than one-third of the plate of pasta. To try and build up another appetite, Annica and I played games on the little tablet they had connected to the table. We played a really fun trivia game on a level where we had to guess character names. After we left Olive Garden, we got ready for Moses. My mom wanted me to dress nice while I was gone, so I wore a black shirt with a tuxedo design and my ‘fancy’ watch. As we drove around Annica’s dad nearly got us lost, but thanks to the magic of Google Maps, we found our way around almost perfectly. When we arrived to the Sight and Sound building, it was just the prettiest thing I had even seen in Branson itself, and that’s just from my first time visiting. Inside was a statue of Moses with his staff raised in the air and waves being raised behind him. The building was absolutely packed! There was the gift shop, the small stand area where food was bought, and all around was the flashing of camera lights from peoples’ phones. As high as my anxiety was, which was pretty bad, my anticipation was just as high. Annica and I even took a few pictures of us and I took a few of her and her parents. It was hard not being
Furthermore, Hughes uses the rhetorical device of allusion when he writes about his aunt’s bringing him to the church for a special meeting. When he writes, “Then just before the revival ended, they held a special meeting for children, ‘to bring the young lambs to the fold’’’ (1), he attempts to correlate his invitation to salvation to a Biblical parable. Along with his reference to the Bible, he conveys the church member’s excitement with vivid imagery. He illustrates the church’s setting as being infuse with “all moans and shouts and lonely cries and dire pictures of hell”, and he also describes the preacher’s sermon as a “wonderful rhythmical sermon” (3). Conjointly, Hughes presents imagery of the churchgoers and alludes to a Biblical story in order to demonstrate the magnitude of the religious enthusiasm of the members of the church.
In the sixth chapter of Thomas C. Foster’s How to Read Literature Like a Professor, Foster examines the Bible and its importance throughout stories, poetry and film. The Bible is one of the most commonly known pieces of literature and is even “nonsectarian” in Foster’s eyes (44). Because stories from the Bible are so well known, the Bible is a tremendously easy for authors to reference when constructing a new composition. Especially “prior to sometime in the middle of the twentieth century” writers were “solidly instructed in religion” and could count on the public being very well acquainted with Biblical stories (47). This widespread knowledge of the Bible lead to greater understandings throughout literature, and the recognized allusions helped
After we had finished shopping we went to a mexican restaurant we usually go to. When I get really hungry I like need food that second or I get sick, we call that a “food panic”. So I was having a food panic and was like really hungry. I really like the restaurant because of the chips. I love the chips at mexican restaurants. For my main meal I got the best cheese quesadilla ever. The quesadilla was so cheesy that the cheese would stretch forever, there was this seasoning on it that made it really spicy. Overall the meal was really tasty.
Avery and Garrett spent their time trying to perfect the baked potatoes and macaroni and cheese they picked out. Every person there had so much excitement for the meal that we’d worked throughout the day to bring together. Finally it was done. The burgers were done. The sides were done. The cookies were done (and frosted very well, I must add.) The guests were arriving every few seconds and the red, white, and blue balloons were everywhere you looked. Dinner was laid out in a hurry and eaten in the same hurry. Seconds were had, and the night was one that I will remember for the rest of my
On November 22nd I went to Brooklyn Tabernacle with my best friend and her mother. I knew prior, going to this service would count as legitimate performance so much so that I could write a review on it since firstly, I remember whilst watching Obama’s 2012 inauguration ceremony on television that this church choir performed and phenomenally at that. I also knew the gist of what to expect in view of the fact that the two that I attended the church with, regularly attend Brooklyn Tabernacle’s Sunday service.
On July 14, 2016 I was sitting in my car with my parents on the long three hour fifty minute drive to Morgantown. I was nervous and excited for the experience I was about to have. Would I fit in? Would I make any friends? But I wouldn’t find out until I got there and met the other chosen attendees. And as we slowly made our way down the road I drifted off to sleep.
It was an overall great experience! - We played video games, ate many delicious pieces of pizza, drank chocolate milk without pinkies’ up - because we’re fancy! And eventually, we finally sat down and watched Netflix - more specifically, Scary Movie - and scarred Sarah Grace for life!
For breakfast there were eggs, bacon, sausage waffles and so many more delicious options. My personal favorite was the cinnamon sticks dipped in warm maple syrup, although there wasn’t much time to eat them, I savored every bite. As my day went, on because of all the training going on, I had no idea when we would finish or how much time we had left. Until I heard “chow time”, words that made me smile because not only do we get a break, but I knew that we only had half of the day left. For lunch the dining hall served hot wings with white rice along with your choice of sides at the salad bar. The thing that made lunch extra special was the fact that we could have cookies. It may not seem like much now, but at that time it was the only real sweets most of us had in weeks. Although I tried not to show it, inside I was grinning from ear to ear. Then finally, there was dinner. Dinner meant that the day was finished. There was no more training or exercising and I would be able to go to bed soon. For dinner, pizza. That alone was the perfect satisfaction for me after an extremely long day and it was enough to hold me over until
Interestingly enough, the times of laughter and awkward silences or all the Sunday afternoons I spent sitting under a tree are not what I remember the most. It is all of the cultural windows we spent so much time looking through. After a year of Mrs. Stanford’s Old Testament class without any insight to the culture, my expectations for cultural insight were very low. Nevertheless, I was appalled the first time we read in Luke after looking through a window. Everything I read made so much more sense, as I now understood the “why” behind everything that was happening.
Earlier in the evening of the horrible winter storm, my mom suggested we go out for family dinner. My mom, my dad, and I headed towards Olive Garden on East Washington Street. The three of us arrived and began to look over the menu. Twenty minutes passed by, and Chase finally arrived. He agreed to meet us there because his indoor ultimate Frisbee practice ran late. My family and I were starving, so we ordered immediately.
Nydia spent the night with me so she could be with me when we left. We stayed up and talked about how we were ready to go see the Lion King Live. We finally quietly dozed off around one or two in the morning. We all met up at my grandma’s house so we could leave at the same time. We took two cars my Aunt, who is really a cousin but we grew up calling her our Aunt, and my Aunt, who is my dad’s sister. We started on the road, we took a few stops because hunger was clawing at our insides so, we stop at like a McDonald’s or Burger King. It was like three hours before we got to Tunica, which didn’t sleep long because I went to sleep half of the way. We stopped at a restaurant called Mesquite, which is the best restaurant I have ever been to, besides McEwens, before we left to go to the Orpheum. I order a steak, shrimp, and fries. I didn’t finish but it was really good.

In the afternoons, my youth group put on a vacation bible school for a local daycare. I stepped off the bus and looked around. It wasn’t anything special. They had a basketball goal with the net ripped off, a small playground, and an old, rusty swing set. I walked towards the old fire hall that was somewhat remodeled into a daycare. The
After we were assigned a table, we searched through the menu for the perfect meal. The interior of the place was homey and warm. The atmosphere excited and joyful. As we waited for our meals we talked about everything that had been going on. I told them about the weird
On Saturday October 28th, 2017 the St.Mary’s Syrian Orthodox Church of Washington D.C. hosted their yearly “Family Night” event. This event was created by the members of the church in order to spread awareness of the talent and overall culture of our community. Although there was a slight delay for the event, the performances throughout was very entertaining and informative. It ranged from dances, songs, to speeches and minor lectures about growing issues in our society today. It started off with many of the youth showing off their talent mainly through art forms such as singing and dancing to cultural and religious songs. I myself assisted with the emcees of the night and partook in the event by acting as Jesus for a skit and submitting a short film alongside friends that underscored the situation of how a Grandmother from India would interpret the lifestyle in America. The special talent of all our youth closed with a young boy performing his magic act that wow’d the crowd. After the acts, the remainder of Family Night included a series of speeches and lectures from our Priest to other older youth members that discussed growing issues in the world and how we can act to resolve these issues.
