Nature evolves in regular pulsating rhythms. From tiny atoms to huge galaxies each being vibrates in the same fashion - up down, in out. Our bodies have over one hundred different cycles the metabolism of our cells, the pumping of our blood, our intake of oxygen, and even our moods and states of alertness. When the cycles mix appropriately with each other and with their environment our well being and progress are assured, for we our functioning as nature intended. When these rhythms are out of this pattern, our bodies suffer. The periodicity of these rhythms range from a fraction of a second to a number of years. Of 1,000 households in Los Angeles, one third had someone with current problems, and in 42 percent someone had suffered from sleep disorders at sometime. Some doctor's polls have been revealing yet somewhat disparate. In one serve, roughly 19 percent of the patients seen by the 3,000 doctors had complaints of some type of insomnia. That figure may actually understate the case, for some say that more people in the United States visit doctors for help in getting to sleep than any other single complaint. It is also estimated that half of those not considered insomniacs have a sleepless night on occasion, and a large but undetermined number do not sleep as well as they should. To be more specific to what I have, it would be secondary insomnia, which means that a person is having a sleep disorder caused by things like medications. Insomnia can also vary in how long it lasts and how often it occurs. It can be short-term or can last a long time (chronic insomnia). Short-term insomnia can last from one night to a few weeks. There are a few factors that are essential for life such as breathing or eating, but one of the most essential factor is sleep. Even though the amount of sleep people need differs from one individual to another, the fact is that eventually everyone needs to sleep. People know the importance of sleep, but due to the increased workload and the pressure of society people are getting less sleep. This simply means that the body has a natural clock that runs it. The circadian timing system is no longer a twenty-four hour cycle, but it is just more of an individual timing system (Williams 111). As people have developed and changed, the system is no longer twenty-four hours, but it has become more personalized according to the individual. Circadian rhythms have a large impact on our sleeping patterns and if the system is changed, it can be the beginning cause of sleep deprivation.

Sleep is one of the things that most students can say they do not get enough of. It is a time for us to rest and for a few blissful hours hopefully forget about the stress and worries of school and life. Unfortunately, due to too much work or too much studying to do, often enough, we do not get the amount we need each night to be fully rested the next day. But we have learned to cope with the sleep deprivation by drinking coffee in the morning to wake us up. Even though we are awake, how well can we function throughout the day when we have only had less than five hours of sleep? How much does our behavior change without enough sleep?
