Tradition is a fragile thing in a culture built entirely on the memories of elders- Alice Albinia
Introduction :
What is culture? The word culture derives from a French term, which in turn derives from the Latin‘colere’, which means to tend to the earth and grow, or to cultivate and nurture.
Culture in all aspects depicts a homogeneity…it is a shared meaning of symbols and experiences. It is a binding force within which one feels a part of a cohesive unit. As already mentioned, culture serves to protect and nurture. But it is this culture which at times finds itselfinadequate to safeguard the rights of a few of its own. An example of this is are the unfortunate children who have become the victims of abuse.
Child abuse by general definition is, the use of a child by an adult or a significantly older child or adolescent for sexual gratification1.Sometimes, a sex offender may receive gratification by just exposing himself to the child, or by observing or filming a child removing his or her clothes. Offenders may not use physical force but often use play, deception, threats, or other coercive methods to engage in sexual activity with the child. Sexual activity between two children where there is a clear powerdifferencemostly amounts to abuse which is very different from the normal mutual exploratory play out of curiosity in children, e.g. ‘playing doctor’. ‘Sexual abuse can also be defined as, any act which exposes a child to, or involves a child in, sexual processes beyond
Culture is defined as a whole basis of knowledge, belief, art, morals, law, and customs that define a person or group of persons. Culture differs is so many ways and that culture is what defines each of person as an individual. This concept comes from the cultural that was taught and developed from after birth and through our adolescent years. Our culture is the foundation of who we are. It identifies the lifestyle and pursuits that are practiced in the group of people we interact with in our society. Culture beliefs, values, and practices are learned from birth.
Sexual abuse can be hard to define because of the many different forms it can take on, the different levels of frequency, the variation of circumstances that can occur. Until a child is fit to function as a self-supporting and informed adult, we have an obligation not to take advantage of their lack of power or protection to inflict damage, or demand submission to acts that are not in their own best interests within. Children are being abused every day in different countries. While commonly accepted wisdom had been that childhood sexual abuse results in long lasting negative outcomes.
What does culture mean? Culture means the arts and other manifestations of human intellectual achievement regarded collectively. My cultural identity is a unique one based on the influences of Technology, Fashion, and Language.
Sexual abuse involves forcing or enticing a child or young person to take part in sexual activities, not necessarily involving a high level of violence, whether or not the child is aware of what is happening. The activities may involve physical contact, including assault by penetration or non-penetrative acts such as masturbation, kissing, rubbing and touching outside of clothing. They may also include non-contact activities, such as involving children in looking at, or in the production of, sexual images, watching sexual activities, encouraging children to behave in sexually inappropriate ways, or grooming a child in preparation for abuse, this also includes via the internet. Sexual abuse is not solely perpetrated by adult males, Women and other children can also commit acts of sexual abuse. This type of abuse is usually committed by someone known to the victim not just by sexual predators. It is important to remember that boys as well as girls can also be the victim of sexual abuse. The signs of sexual abuse as with emotional abuse may not be outwardly visible, because of the shame and self-blame a child will have if this is happening or has happened to them, makes it very difficult for a child
Culture is the invisible bond which ties people together. People in a culture might share a religion or language and often have similar attitudes, behaviors, or beliefs. Cultures have been spread around, developed, and changed over time. The art, literature, language, and religion of a community represent its culture. Our cultural values and beliefs manifest themselves through our lifestyle. Our moral values represent our culture. The importance of culture lies in its close association with the ways of thinking and living. Our culture gives us an identity, and helps build our character. The cultural values shared across our community or social group, give us a sense of belonging towards society. Our culture unites us and gives us a sense of security. The importance of culture cannot be stressed enough, as it is something that lies within us, around us, and is an integral part of our being. It defines the way we treat others and
As time progresses on, more reports of child sexual abuse (CSA) have been documented. According to Colangelo and Cooperman, CSA is defined as “the use of a child under 18 years of age as an object of gratification for adult sexual needs and desires.” Another definition of CSA is “sexual abuse [that] occurs whenever one person dominates and exploits another by means of sexual activity or suggestion.” (Hall, M., & Hall, J., 2011) it is difficult to
An estimated 39 million survivors of childhood sexual abuse exist in America today (Darness2Light, 2009a ). This figure continues to grow daily as perpetrators of this crime continue in this destructive path. The definition of child sexual abuse is the force, coercion, or cajoling of children into sexual activities by a dominant adult or adolescent. Sexual abuse of children includes touching (physical) sexually including: fondling; penetration (vaginal or anal using fingers, foreign objects or offenders organs; oral sex, or non-physical contact including: sexual comments; indecent exposures; masturbating in a child’s presence; child prostitution or child pornography (Child Welfare, 2009a).
The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines culture as “the beliefs, customs, art etc. of a particular society, group, place or time” (Culture, n.d.). Cultural norms vary around the globe, which can make the global business
Child abuse is defined as the mistreatment of children or minors, resulting in a variety of harmful and damaging results with regard to the well being and safety of the victim. Child abuse can range in the details and circumstances in which the offence takes place; child abuse can take place in a direct physical fashion, which includes attack and physical assault
Sexual abuse, whether of adults or children, is also abuse of a position of power. It also covers any behaviour by any adult towards a child to stimulate either the adult or child sexuality. When the victim is younger than the age of consent (it is a minimum age at which a person is considered to be legally competent to consent to sexual acts), it is referred to as child sexual abuse.
Sexual abuse- when an adult uses a child for sexual purposes or involves a child in sexual acts
“Child sexual abuse involves any sexual activity with a child where consent is not or cannot be given. This includes sexual contact that is accomplished by
Finkelhor (2009) gives the most inclusive definition – “child sexual abuse is the use of force/coercion of a sexual nature either when the victim is younger than age 13 and the age difference between the victim and the perpetrator is at least 5 years, or when the victim is between 13 and 16 and the age difference between the victim and perpetrator is at least 10 years”. Child sexual abusers are typically someone the child or family knows. “The most important distinction among child sexual abusers is whether they are pedophilic or non-pedophilic, because pedophilia is a strong predictor of sexual recidivism” (Simons, 2015).
Culture is a way of life. It can be defined as a group of people linked by geographical location, ethnicity, gender or age. Culture can be reflected through language, clothing, food, behavior, spirituality and traditions. The behavioral patterns developed through culture are difficult to change.
Culture is derived from the Latin word "cultura" which means "cultivation". The term culture was first used in its actual sense in the 18th and 19th centuries in Europe
