The Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (JROTC) was created with the passing of the National Defense Act of 1916. Since then, more than 1,700 units have been created in the Army branch alone. I will be focusing on Blackman High School’s JROTC which was founded in 2000.

I would like to be in the Marine Corps JROTC program because it will be able to help me learn the basic elements and the need for national security and my personal obligation as an American. JROTC, Junior Officers’ Training Corps, has impacted thousands of young men and women’s lives in its 100 years of existence. JROTC was created by the National Defense Act of 1916 as a part of Reserve Officers’ Training Corps, more commonly known as ROTC. Under the supervision of the act, high schools were authorized the loan of federal military equipment and assigned active duty military personnel as instructors. During its early years, the course consisted of three hours of instruction a week for three years any many of the times that high schools scheduled training was inconvenient. JROTC is a program to help students graduate from high school, help them become a better citizens, and help them grow with their strengths and help build their weaknesses up. JROTC will also prepare students for their future in possibly joining in the army.

Becoming a NJROTC cadet has taught me many things, things that I know will be useful later in life. Obedience, loyalty, and leadership are many qualities that I have obtained while being in NJROTC. Having a structure system in place helps with motivation and determination in having a foundation set up as growing as one. I remember coming into class my first day nervous, anxious, and ready to start learning. I watched others take on responsibilities like teaching us how to march and how to set up our uniforms properly.

The National Defense Act of 1916 and has made nonmilitary schools to have a military class room for the people who want to be a better civilian or want to have the military expedients and the course is for all nonmilitary school like high schools or college schools that are not military so this offers an opportunity for people. It also gives you credits if you want to go in the military so if you want to go in the military then jrotc will help your career in the military.

JROTC has been around at Smith-Cotton High School since 2004. Lieutenant Cunningham said JROTC is a program that motivates teens to be a better citizen. To join JROTC all you have to do is see a counselor or one of the instructors and they’ll help enroll you. The program currently has 177 students. In JROTC you not only have fun, but you learn life skills like leadership and doing the right thing. They don’t charge you for anything in this program, but the cadets are responsible for cleaning their uniform. When the cadets travel Lieutenant Colonel Cunningham, Command Sergeant Major Woods, and Sergeant First Class Bush provide the food, transportation, everything for the cadets.

Since my freshman year, I have been a part of Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC ). I joined the JROTC raider team my junior year, while on the team, I realized that my teammates were skeptical about success. Making them feel as though as if success was a fantasy, I felt the need to uplift and lead my teammates the best I could, heeding to their skepticism.
