Why I want to continue my career in the Law Enforcement profession. As a young man growing up in Hamilton, Ohio I always admired my uncle who served as a law enforcement officer that influenced me for my career choice. I know going to college at this time in my life was not a practical choice for me and I needed some structure in my life and experience to achieve this goal. However, serving my country would provide me the experience, tools, and mature me for this type of career. The opportunity to serve my country honorably for 20 years as a Military Policeman in the United States Armed Forces and continue this type of selfless service as a private contractor not only provided me the skill set for this type of career, but enable me to travel
Have you ever sat back and thought of the multiple different people that need the criminal justice professionals? A lot of people think that the police, child protection and probation officers are a waste of time but they actually save lives. Adolescents who can no longer live with their parents are placed in others home until it is safe to go back home, homeless people without homes are placed in shelters as well as women that are abused in domestic violence situations. People from every walk of life, race and culture experience these situations. People within the criminal justice profession protect these individuals and help them find a way out of the environment they are in.
I always thought about my skill set differences between my military police experience compared to the city, county and state law enforcement agencies. After retiring from the military, I wanted to pursue another career in the criminal justice field after graduating from Miami University. Even though in this profession today, it is under tremendous amount of scrutinization from the media and communities nationwide has never deterred me from this professional goal.
Law Enforcement officers have one of the most critical jobs in the United States. Their lives are always on the line and they are of high regards. This means they cannot fail! The people of the United States don’t really understand both the positive and negative effects that community policing actually brings. Some may say it is very dangerous based on their experiences. Others may say it’s the best way to do away with crime. Today the two will be compared and put to test by true officers serving our country. The facts will be stated and questions will be answered. Let’s take a look at what community policing is really all about!
Over the past few years, there has been a great divide in our society between that of law enforcement agencies and some local community’s members that have placed fault onto on the law enforcement community (Abegbile, 2017). With demands for criminal justice reform being demanded by such of an outcry in our society, we must evaluate the issues that are at the forefront of these matters (Abegbile, 2017). Our law enforcement community has over the past few years had to assess its leadership, the use of force by law enforcement officers, and to improving public safety.

As a police officer’s career moves ahead one only thinks of the good that can be done by having this career. Ask anyone what the purpose of being a police officer is and they will answer that it is to keep people safe and maintain the peace. What many people do not realize is that being a police officer can damage a person emotionally. Many people see officers helping others and doing good but they do not see what happens when they are off duty. Just like any job being a police officer has its faults. A fault that being a police officer has is the emotional toll it can have on the officer and his family. Several people focus on the officer and how he has been affected by the job but they do not consider the family, the family that is there to help and support
Individuals employed in the field of law enforcement face a special variety of workplace stressors that the majority of other careers do not encounter. Law enforcement officers are frequently exposed to traumatic experiences such as domestic violence, child abuse, horrific injuries, and other human traumas (Lucas, Weidner, and Janisse, 2012). There are also numerous perceived dangers in law enforcement, such as assaults on officers, homicide, and workplace accidents, which can add more stress (Brandl and Stroshine, 2003). In a study of 115 officers from a large department more than 60 common work stressors were identified including but not limited to: fear of being attacked or killed in the line of duty, inadequate supervision, public criticism, losing a fellow officer in the line of duty, an ineffective corrections system, the constant shift from bored to high stress, and workplace politics (Lucas, Weidner, and Janisse, 2012). The work stressors not only impact the law enforcement officer but can also disturb the harmony of the entire law enforcement family. Researchers have attempted to understand these unique stressors impacting law enforcement officers. They have found that because law enforcement officers often deal with daily extreme work stressors that can negatively impact them psychologically and physically it is in the best interest of the entire law enforcement family to seek professional counseling options to help alleviate stress.
Law Enforcement Officers have quite a challenge in today’s modern times. They require patience, discipline, morals to differentiate right from wrong, and the intellect and mental agility to make life or death decisions in mere seconds. It is also imperative of them to have effective interpersonal skills to interact with a variety of different people with different outlooks on society. The attitude today towards Police Officers along with the technology to record everything sets a lot of restrictions on how an Officer can conduct themselves without causing offense, or worse yet, putting themselves in danger for their life or career. By applying Biblical belief and principles, it sets a common ground most all people can relate to, which in turn, has the possibility to deescalate a situation before it gets out of hand.

Since I was a child I have always had an interest in law enforcement. A lot of my family has experience in this field including two police officers. After lengthy studies into what would be the best move for me I decided that a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice would be the best life choice for me. I will begin by enrolling in college in the fall of 2016. Looking forward to my career I am very excited about what this life holds for me.

Historically, law enforcement response to victims of violent and/or personal crimes has been limited to focusing on securing and prosecuting the offender. A profound shift in this thinking began in the early 2000’s when it was discovered that there was remarked improvements in legal outcomes when law enforcement engaged the victim in the process, and this historical stance on victims is no longer the norm.

The Criminal Justice System works to enforce laws within the legislative, judicial, and executive branches of the government. To insure the criminal justice agencies are organized and functioning, it is typically divided into three main components. The three main components are law enforcement agencies, court agencies, and correctional agencies (Siegel & Worrall, 2015). Law enforcement agencies are in charge of thoroughly investigating the crimes and detaining suspects (Siegel & Worrall, 2015). Court agencies are within the court system in which handles all charges, indictments, trials, and sentences (Siegel & Worrall, 2015). Correctional agencies are in charge of the next step after the suspect is convicted such as monitoring, treating, and rehabilitating (Siegel & Worrall, 2015).
