The Metamorphosis by Kafka

Decent Essays

In the novel, The Metamorphosis, Kafka writes about a man who one day transformed into a bug. Kafka’s own feelings of nothingness caused this story to shape into this unique story. Kafka writes, “The dream reveals the reality, which conception lags behind. That is the horror of life – the terror of art” (qtd. In Kennedy and Gioia 299). Kafka said this as a rebuttal to a friend trying to pry information out of him about The Metamorphosis. Kafka meant that the true burden of art is that a person’s experiences will always heavily influence their creations, and that is horrifying. It is clearly shown in his writings that his personal experiences helped shape the story The Metamorphosis. Every little detail about Gregor’s life is a reflection …show more content…

Gregor’s dream of quitting his job and leaving his parents is really Kafka’s dream to be free from his oppressors. Kafka’s first job was at an Italian insurance company. This job was the most tedious job Kafka ever had, it had long hours and horrible pay just like Gregor’s job of a traveling salesman. This shows how Kafka’s hate of his first job was transferred to Gregor, and is the cause of Gregor’s dream of quitting his job. After Kafka went to his second job, he regained his passion for writing. He felt that his day job inhibited his time to write, and grew to hate it. Gregor also hated his job, and longed for a day he could finally quit his job. Kafka writes, “If I didn’t have to curb my tongue because of my parents, I’d have given notice long ago” (Kennedy and Gioia 269). This shows how Kafka’s dream of quitting his job was also shared by Gregor. In 1911, his father and brother-in-law bought an asbestos factory and his father expected him to run it. While he was running it, the factory ran into unexpected debt, and his father forced him to deal with it. This is similar to Gregor’s situation of having to pay for his parent’s debts, while sacrificing all his time to work. He had to work to pay off his family’s debt, and dreamed that he could march up to his director’s office and quit. Kafka’s dream to be free from this job at the debt filled factory was illustrated in Gregor’s own job of paying off the debt
