The New Covenant is different than the Old Covenant because it incorporates a promise. Precedently, the covenants were made, but not promised. With the covenant be promised, it meant that there would be drastic changes that would take place. Mainly the New Covenant would signify the end of how God historically dealt with his people.
The language used in this text is very important. Throughout the section, the Lord makes many “I will” statements, especially in verse 33. All of these “I will” statements are God acting in sovereign grace. The first “I will” statement is “I will make”, the hebrew word for this statement is “Karath (Kaw-rath)” which actually means “to cut, destroy or consume; which is specific to covenant.” While this definition doesn’t initially make sense, it does once in context. The forgiveness of sin comes from Christ dying on the cross. The center of the New Covenant is the law, or the Torah just like the Old Covenant. This expresses what God’s will for his covenant relationship with his people. The New Covenant is also made with “the house of Israel”, or the whole nation of God. While the New Covenant does focus on the individual for the most part; it the individual within the community. Just like the Old Testament never separates the individual from the community and neither should the person reading the scripture. The last three verses talks about the “fixed order”. First it talks about the fixed order of nature. In this sense, these words emphasize the assurance of the permanence of the “New Israel”. The people of God will forever be redeemed and restored.
