The NMC establish standards and requirements for nursing education in professional and ethical issues. The code contains guidelines on expectations of particular duties such as confidentiality, consent rights, and autonomy. All nurses are expected to comply at an individual level with these guidelines on a daily basis, NMC (2015). The nurse and the student played the same role in Bill’s care which was to provide the best possible care for Bill. As the student was working on leadership skills, the nurse supervised the student according to the NMC (2008) which states nurses must facilitate students to develop their competence. The student and the nurse ensured that Bill was put at the heart of every care implemented. Bill’s safety is wellbeing and safety was vital in this episode, of which the student and the nurse ensured that this was maintained and his needs were met physically, emotionally etc. The General Medical Council (GMC, 2013) is a legal body which maintains a register of medical practitioners fit to practice as well as monitor complaints about practitioners. Giving myself time to read up on nursing experiences, attending more clinical practice labs, participating and watching these duties in the health care setting will allow me to develop a secure level of confidence the next time that this type of situation may occur. Staying in the room allowed me to experience the feeling of support while looking past social norms and how they are challenged. I met my personal values, and I believe that one should respect another person`s privacy. This understanding allowed me to be there to support the resident during her time of need. In the article `starting out` by Jane Schulz, a nursing student shares her experience of helping her colleague assist an elderly patient with daily care. Observing the compassion and care between nurse and patient from fundamental tasks, she took away a valued lesson of how our support and caring methods affect an individual. My relation to this story allowed me to reflect on the effects my care and supporting actions had on our patient.

I want to request an exception to the Nursing Admission requirement for the English language proficiency examination. English is not my first language. I have been in the US for more than six years, and by the time I get into nursing school I will be here more than seven years (very close to the required time which is eight years). I do not have problem with English at all in school. The last English class I took at Century College was English 1021, and I got an A. In the fall semester of 2016 my GPA was 3.66, and my name was on the Dean’s list. I believe that English language is not a factor that could hold me back from my academic achievement, therefore I hope to have the exception to the English language proficiency examination.
Ethical issues in nursing will always be an ongoing learning process. Nurses are taught in nursing school what should be done and how. Scenarios are given on tests with one right answer. However, there are situations that nurses may encounter that may have multiple answers and it is hard to choose one. “Ethical directives are not always clearly evident and people sometimes disagree about what is right and wrong” (Butts & Rich, 2016). When an ethical decision is made by a nurse, there must be a logical justification and not just emotions.

Nurses are subject to a plethora of legal, ethical, and professional duties which can be very challenging on a day to day basis. Some of these duties include respecting a patient 's confidentiality and autonomy, and to recognize the duty of care that is owed to all patients. As nurses our duties are always professional; however there are legal implications if these duties are breached. We also must consider when it is okay as nurses to breach these duties and therefore ethical issues arise. As nurses one of our main priorities is to advocate for our patients, without our own personal feelings on the matter taking over.
