The Old College Try
From a young age, people learn the importance of structure to succeed. As early as kindergarten, schools teach students how to build healthy habits, such as organization skills, time management, and commitment to thoroughly completing tasks to the best of their ability. The quality of being organized sets the foundation for success. The motto “give it the old college try” is commonly used when referring to the amount of effort and willpower required to succeed in college. Some students put forth the effort in order to earn A’s. The “F” student is only separated from the “A” student by a difference in motivation, discipline, and social priorities. Every student has free access to the library, available course material,

Achievers typically have a plan for their future which guides their present activities. The “A” students are motivated to obtain a successful career after their college education. These students are committed to challenging themselves and strive to consistently do better. Students who underachieve are optimistic and unrealistic about their time commitments. Consequently, underachievers procrastinate and find themselves with incomplete and sloppy work. These underachievers do not think about the consequences of their actions, or lack of, and tend to focus on the present instead of the future. The inability to stay committed to academic priorities leads to a weak educational foundation. Underachievers are not driven and do not consistently challenge themselves. Unlike the achievers, these unmotivated students do not have a plan for their future.
College is not easy and requires self-discipline. Students need to pay attention in class, take notes, and complete school work outside of class to succeed. Achievers understand the importance of structure. The “A” students demonstrate self-discipline by being committed to reviewing material multiple times and thoroughly completing assignments. These students prioritize studying and commit to a self-imposed schedule. By staying committed to their self-imposed schedule, students lay the path for continuous healthy habits. These healthy habits lead to success. On the other hand, failing students
Soon, I discovered a method to avoid the potential of feeling insubstantial, if only for a few more hours or days. Thus, allow me to introduce you to an old friend, procrastination. My way of thinking soon became, “If I’m not going to get an A, then why even put the effort in?” and consequently, innumerable assignments were put off until five in the morning where it would be due in two hours or it would never reach my teacher’s hands at all. I’m sure most teachers believed the cause to be laziness or a lack of ambition, however I strongly believe that if they’d known the constant stress, self-doubt, and exhaustion that I
Regardless of the circumstances one must practice self-discipline in order to be successful in achieving a degree. A college degree may not always be easily available, but with dedication and appreciation it is attainable. There is a time for socializing and fun, and a time for getting academics done. Balancing academic discipline and social recreation is the key to making the best out of your college years. However disappointing it may be to watch some students take their opportunity for granted, it is refreshing to observe the appreciation of the students who dedicate themselves and earn a degree regardless of the odds they
In December 2011 Suleyman Avci conducted a study on 508 first grade students to learn the relationship between self-regulation and the delay of gratification in doing well in academics. Most people are aware the more time they put into something the better the results will turn out and the bigger the reward will be. This theory applies to almost anything including academics. The more one studies the better they will do on a test however, not all students understand this, which explains why some students are more stressed than others. In order to perform well in school students need to set goals for the future and not get distracted by things in the present, like watching television or playing video games, instead of studying for a test. I am completely aware of this; nevertheless, it is still hard to do because my “hot system” wants the instant gratification of doing something fun rather than homework. Future success is hindered by the need for instant gratification. Students who achieve higher levels of academic success are those who realize academic rewards are more important than temporary satisfaction. Those
In college, predicting academic success is a difficult challenge facing institutions of higher education. Unfortunately, before completing degrees, majority of students leave. Andrew Carnegie once said, “Anything in life worth having is worth working for.” High academic achievement in college certainly requires a great deal of effort over an extended period of time and is undoubtedly worth having. However, students who have high levels of frustration intolerance are at particular risk of falling into patterns of procrastination. But those who are more willing to tolerate frustration in pursuit of academic achievement tend to have higher GPA’s. In most students, studying for exams, writing for papers, and engaging in other academic behaviors
As generations pass, and students change and develop, teachers and administrators propose new techniques to help students improve. From the introduction of school, to the division of age groups, to standardized testing, someone always has a new way to help students in school. A new idea, however, may be the key to success. A school in Massachusetts has developed a new program that challenges students with college level classes while still in high school. As students improve in school, to prevent boredom in the classroom, they need a challenge, this challenge being harder level, college courses. While still in the comfort of high school, students experience the rigor of college classes, this helping ease the transition into higher education
They can’t do that if they spend every hour eating, sleeping, or studying for fear that they won’t be successful. Students are completely burned out by the time they get to college (Robbins).
At a young age, we as a collective society have experienced the first-hand the struggles of attempting to be successful. We are told that excellence inevitably leads to success. We are told as children that one must go to college in order to be successful. As a result, children aspire to go to college only because we are told it is essential to be successful in life. The path to be a success is a stressful one and requires a great deal of work. There is too much homework, too many tests, and too much needless pressure is put upon the shoulders of young children by their parents. In her essay “Is the Drive for Success Making Our Children Sick?” Vicki Abeles argues and exposes the harmful effects of the drive for success. Abeles incorporates other ways to improve a child’s drive for success with consideration to the children’s health. One of her strategies for a healthier drive that would be beneficial and adopted by both college educators and fellow students is a limit on homework and weekend and holiday homework ban. Although a drive to be successful is essential for achieving excellence, limiting homework would be beneficial because it is less overwhelming for students, provokes less stress and
Yet again, restrict the search to any college of your choice, and witness the variety of study skill resources for a student to absorb. This isn’t just the solicitation of vendors since many of the offerings are gratis. Though that is not to suggest students aren’t willing to pay to address delinquencies in their approach to a huge investment of time, effort, and money. In this genuine struggle, students pull away from losing that investment by redressing the remedial shortfall. Within the classroom, they face a common practice of tying grades, and even course enrollment, to the acknowledgement of introduction materials. This practice signals to student and teacher alike the operant limits in ability to stay on top of assignments. In other words, organization skill deficits preempt and block any further progress to learning. College policy backs these practices, enforceable on all students. This substantiates the importance and necessity of these skills to the individual, the institution, and industry at
Many students have different ways to maintain good grades in school. Some might find it hard to maintain but they don’t have another choice. When it comes to college they have to be successful in order to reach their goal. They have to take it seriously and there may be some people that might not know how. Especially incoming college freshman are going to find it helpful if they let them know what they need to do.
harder will be more likely to obtain better grades than a student who does not. The
As I began my junior year, I found myself juggling a rigorous academic schedule, varsity tennis, a social life and a new job. At first, I figured I could balance all of these activities. However, I became humbled by a 32% on an early Physics test triggering sheer panic regarding future applications to college. Knowing my grades needed to trend up as a junior, I dug down and did everything possible to improve my grades. I committed myself to a nightly study regimen consisting of intermittent on-off study blocks. Diligent removal of all distractions, including my I-Phone while studying was a major key. Also, I reduced my hours at work and often went to school early to meet with my teachers to review material. This action plan ultimately led to the improvement of my grades in all classes, culminating with a “B” in Physics and meeting my overall goal of a 4.0 GPA. Yes, I had failed a single test, but the real failure was not prioritizing and planning my activities proactively. The lesson I learned from this
What are the factors that contribute to a student's success in college? Many people would say that it is up to them how well they do on college, because they are already young adults who already know their own responsibilities. But these answers are not factors that help student’s success and their attitude are one of the circumstances that are missing from a student life, the support from their family members and close friends are a lack of confidence and motivation that can be given. In history, there has been cases in which one thing lead to another, meaning there are an infinity of things that can help or get it worst. Its time to change the world and give the opportunity to have some positive thoughts and stay away from all the negativity of other people, leading students to a new path that will end in a successful college experience. Even though students have challenging times because of diversity after decades they have many education opportunities, students should regulate their style of living because of the health issues that could came eventually, time management will help students survive throughout the courses, and character strengths will increase positive achievements on life.
Many college faculty members consider students unprepared for college. There are many reasons as to why students are not sufficiently prepared for work that they will be facing in college. Two of those reasons are, in College it is the students’ responsibility to remember when assignments are due without being told constantly and when in high school students are taught much differently than when they are in college.
Many students never learn effective study skills and proper habits in high school. So, many may struggle through their first and even second semester of college. Many students needs to figure out how they best study to be successful in college, but also have the proper everyday habits to increase this further. Many people cannot create a quality essay, or properly study for a test at four in the morning with the music playing, television on, or playing video games. Although poor study habits will cause students to struggle, which results in greater stress and unhappiness, some can fix this dilemma by taking the extra steps to better their skills. Some people have a harder time adjusting to school than other people and may feel that
Everyone views overachievers in a positive way; however, at times their techniques can lead to some unhealthy habits. Since their main goal is to do everything perfectly, when they fail it hits a lot harder and can cause their self-esteem to drop. Failure is a scary thing for overachievers because that is the one thing that they are trying not to do.You may not think of procrastinating being a part of an overachiever’s life, but it is. They spend just as much time, or more, on small tasks as they do on the bigger ones. This causes procrastination and, soon enough, failure. If overachievers look at failures in a positive way and look to learn from their mistakes, they will feel much better about themselves and their work. Getting more crucial assignments and work done first, instead of putting more time and energy in the minor things, will help them avoid procrastination.
