The Peak Adventure Challenge Course brought up many skills and abilities that pertain to leadership, but few I can relate to myself unfortunately since I do not have many leadership skills. One thing they did emphasize that I feel like I can relate to is time management. After being in the military I became a big fan of being punctual. They talked about how if a game or session it will cut into the rest of the day. If something goes to long it could cut the last session short or if something ends early it could end the day prematurely. Even to get back on schedule can become challenging running another event longer or shorter. Being on time is a big objective in a day of activities. Something I’m not very good at is the point they made of …show more content…
Communication is the key to any good leadership. If followers can not hear the leader then they are lost on what needs to get done. However, communication is not just for leaders though it is for followers as well because they can give feedback to the leader if something is not working and the leader can make adjustments to overcome the obstacle.
Females mostly dominated the voice of the group because they spoke up the most. I think the females were more out spoken while the guys were shy and quiet. As the day went on the males became more vocal and started speaking up. It took awhile for everyone to start talking, but the group eventually got there. I believe the breaking point of when everyone started being vocal was when we broke into smaller groups. Its at this point it could be seen that everyone was having an easier time communicating to the rest of the group. I think to start being vocal in a larger group is difficult compared to speaking up in a smaller group. I can admit it was easier for myself to communicate in a smaller group then communicate in a larger group. Once you get to know more people in a larger group it is easier to speak up. When it came to volunteering at the start of the day no one really got up right away. It seemed more like everyone was thinking, “please don 't pick me.” Granted there were a few girls who volunteered first, but not after a
Additionally to this, communication is the mechanism and a tool that pulls people together, making them understand their emotions, values and beliefs. Strong communication skills can really improve one’s leadership abilities, including motivating subordinates at work or family members at home (Sheppard, 2011).
Communication is “the process of relaying information between or among people by the use of words, letters, symbols, or body language” (Cherry & Jacob, 2011, p. 381). Communication is a two- way process; the message conveyed by the sender needs to be heard and understood by the receiver. It is important for “leaders to communicate regularly and consistently with staff” (Shifflet & Moyer, 2010, p. 252). Some
Let´s focus on communication, specifically listening. , As employees each of you have a leadership role based on your positions. In these positions you are required to take instructions, present guidance, make decisions, and implement policy. If you cannot listen effectively, you will miss critical instructions, mislead guidance, make less informed decisions, and hopefully never implement the wrong policies.
Communication plays a critical role in leadership at all organization levels. However, effective communication is not an easy task, and any group of people needs to be careful with channels and modes of communication. There are old and new barriers that result in incomplete communication, miscommunication, and broken communication. Any malfunctioning in a conversation resulting from the complexity of communication has severe consequences both at individual and organizational levels.
Many people have one major flaw that hinders their ability to lead others. This flaw is the ability to listen. Without this ability a lot of confusion will arise. The main clue that a leader does not have good listening properties is when there are enormous amounts of miscommunication and misunderstandings in a group of individuals. This flaw is not as detrimental and can be corrected by simply stop talking and listening to what others
In fact, Baldwin et al emphasizes how “communication skills are central to success” (). He reinforces the above-mentioned fruits by validating how effective communication means, “hear[ing] other people’s statements from their point of view” (Baldwin et al, 2013, p.184). This type of communication depicts how successful leaders “create meaningful relationships” (Parrott, 2009, p. 41), through love, peace, kindness, goodness, and gentleness. As such, I
transferred, ideas cannot be shared and good relationships will not materialize. Leaders who listen and process any type of communication respectfully, are able to influence in a positive manner and
Effective communication is so important for organizational success Good Leadership ensures active participation. Most organizations concentrate on hiring individuals with certain qualities but you really do not know what type of people you are hiring until you get to know them that might be late.
One of the most important skills of a leader in a company is that he or she knows how to communicate well. Communication skills are essential in today’s competitive environment, and a company with good communication flow will achieve advantages such as stronger business relationships, increased productivity and quicker problem solving.
Communication is one of the most important characteristics both a leader and a follower can have. The receiver of the communication must clearly understand the exact information the sender is transmitting. Communication involves both verbal and nonverbal transmissions. Leaders communicating effectively get the same message to all of their followers. There is no room for interpretation, gossip, or assumption. When communicating effectively, leaders make consistent eye-contact and maintain a body posture that appears to be open to the message from the followers. Messages can become convoluted when the sender is giving different messages regarding the same topic to a variety of receivers. This only breeds discontent and distrust. For example, teachers need to be trained as a team and communicated with as a team. They are
Communication is necessary in any organization. A simple definition is "sharing information with other people" (Baldwin, Boomer, & Rubin, 2013). Possessing good communication skills is an important characteristic in determining a leader 's level of success. Even though it is an acquired skill, every leader must develop these skills in order to become successful. The message must be clear and concise for the purpose to be conveyed properly. Many companies focus on the components that are involved to determine the context of the message and whether or not the information is relevant and important. A great leader possess excellent listening, speaking, and writing skills in order improve teamwork. Proverbs 16:23 states that “the heart of the wise makes his speech judicious and adds persuasiveness to lips” (New International Verison). The verse reflects on how a great leader will persuade by giving a well delivered message with the intent to motivate and encourage the members. For example, an individual in a meeting trying to persuade his CEO through a proposal to invest in an offshore
Barriers to communication have a significant impact on effective leadership. This barrier is a double-edged sword as they can affect both the employees' actions when communication from the leader is flawed, and also affect the leader's ability to make informed decisions when communication from employees to leadership is not well received. Uniquely, there are various communication channels (formal and informal) within my organization. Some of these channels include the use of emails, Microsoft Lync chat system, memos, letters (snail mail), Facebook@Work, video conferencing, telephone, town hall meetings, intranet, etc. Furthermore, leadership strives to make all initiatives known to employees and uses all means to make sure the message is well received and understood. We do however experience the full spectrum of poor to skilled communication every day in meetings, emails, and critical conversations. Highly effective communicators use other people’s time and attention wisely and would encourage the people disseminating the message to know the audience to whom the message is intended. Also, I would recommend to individual leaders to strategically plan their communication to make sure they accomplish the desired result.
The leader has to learn and develop a sound knowledge in communication skill which will enable him or her to build an excellent team in his organization because without effective communication, they will be description in organizational goal, stress, confusion and frustration between the leader and the members of the team and can lead to reduction in organizational success. The leader has to have open communication skill to facilitate and support the change process because every staff will react differently to any organizational change. As this time, provide excellent training and make ensure every members of the team are pulling in the same direction because "The major role of a leader is to guide and lead” according to
I watched a video in YouTube and it was named as “important leadership skills”. From that video I have learned that, communication with the followers plays a vital role while playing the leadership skills. Communication skills are one of my strengths. To accomplish any tasks, it is important to discuss about the mission as well as vision of the particular task. I believe that, my followers must not be confused of what task needs
