The Person I Chose As My Leader

Winston Churchill had an incredible background, which had earned him the respect of the people and the influence as the second most powerful individual in the United Kingdom. Churchill enrolled into a Military college when he was of age, and participated in many conflicts surrounding the areas of Cuba, India and Sudan. In 1908, Churchill became a politician. During his time as a member of parliament, he began the movement to support the labor class of the British, introducing the ideas of minimum wage, insurance for the unemployed and most importantly the People’s Budget, which taxed the rich to support the social departments. These achievements within the military and in the parliament supported his ethos when regarding the people.

A leader leads others by being an example and role model. In the book Animal Farm by George Orwell, the pigs were atrocious leaders to all the other animals. On the other hand, Winston Churchill was a great leader. Churchill was a prime minister during World War 2. He demonstrated good leadership and had the ability to inspire others. Unlike the pigs in Animal Farm, Winston Churchill embodies the characteristics of a strong leader because he was very positive, had a lot of confidence, and was always honest.

The military called him, and Churchill answered that call. Over the next five years, Churchill would go on to serve under three regiments, including the Malakand Field Force, infamously the subject of the Nobel Prize winner’s first novel (Churchill1.) His first two books were published in 1898 and ‘99, respectively (LIFE.) He then went on to serve as a journalist in the Boer War, in South Africa (Churchill1.) Captured, Churchill was made a prisoner of war before his heroic escape. He explains the happenings in London to Ladysmith. Just as in India, Churchill also spent time in Sudan (Churchill1.) Literature played a large role while he was stationed in the military. Between jobs, he read the works of Darwin, Gibbon, Plato, Aristotle, and Macaulay, educating him in philosophy and speech remarkably. The most influential writer to Churchill was Gibbon, who he credits for helping him become a great orator (Churchill1.) He first began writing while stationed in Cuba, and was a correspondent for the London Daily Graphic (Churchill1.) Politics came later. When Churchill returned from the war, he was disappointed with his pay, and altered his career course. However, when he first stood for Parliament, he was defeated, but not dissuaded.

Winston Churchill led a very exciting and hard young life. He became a soldier and a journalist around age twenty and started traveling around the British Empire (“Winston Churchill Biography”). One time while he was “reporting on the Boer War in South Africa, he was taken prisoner by the Boers while on a scouting expedition” (“Winston Churchill Biography”). Winston Churchill was the prime minister of Great Britain from 1940 t0 1945 and then again in 1951 to 1955. He led many fights for Great Britain such as the fight against the Nazi Germany in WWII. He knew what the end of WWII would end up to be, he clearly saw what would happen. He had this “bulldog” spirit about him and because of that; he was always inspiring people and having them push through the hard times. He would always make sure every was ready to fight and he was a big supporter in using planes in war. His attitude to not admit a defeat or a loss gave him a huge reputation for many other politicians that strive to follow him to this day.

Soaked in sweat, I ran to the library to get a book on a historical leader before they were all gone. I would like to think I found a great leader, but I think one found me. As I was reading a book on great leaders of World War II, I initially focused on American leaders, but Sir Winston S. Churchill seemed fit my exact requirements. Sir Winston S. Oftentimes, the best leaders are those who are willing to step up and face the daunting tasks that no one else will. As Prime Minister of England during World War II, Winston Churchill’s leadership left a permanent mark upon history. Many believe that without him, the Allies would have lost the war. In the words of John C. Maxwell, “Leaders become great not because of their power, but because of their ability to empower others.” Churchill prided himself in having courage in all things and possessed the unique ability to provide others with courage also. He led the British empire through battle after battle tirelessly, saying, “Continuous effort – not strength or intelligence – is the key to unlocking our potential.” To him, there was “no use saying ‘we are doing our best.’ You have got to succeed in doing what is necessary.” Although it was almost certain that Britain would lose World War II, Churchill provided the willpower needed to stand against Germany and engendered a motivated and hardworking government, as well as an inspired nation.

Churchill served in various governmental posts between 1906 and 1910. In 1910 to 1911 (as Home Secretary) he employed his troops to fight against strikers in South Wales. In 1911, Churchill was transferred to the office of the First Lord of Admiralty, a post he held into the First World War. He gave direction to several reform efforts, including development of aviation in the navy. He supported construction of new and larger warships, the development of tanks, and the switch from coal to oil energy in the royal navy. Abortive expeditions to Antwerp and Gallipoli and the failed action at the Dardanelles did great harm to Churchill’s reputation and career. Later, after passing school with only mediocre grades, Winston wanted to join the British Royal Military, however, like his schooling, he failed his first two attempts at The British Royal Military College Exam. This only disappointed his father, who already had high standards for Winston because of the family he was coming from. In one final attempt, Winston passed the exam and went on to military education and graduated 20th in his class of 130. Churchill did not lose his passion for journalism or politics however, because after some time spent in India during his military service and the publication of his experiences in India, called "The River War," he resigned from his militaristic obligations as a soldier on May 3, 1899 (Ball, 17). Churchills first official political step was his running for an office in the British House of Commons in July 1899, which after much time and effort, was lost by only a small percentage of voters. Winston Churchill showed key leadership skills during his time as the Prime Minister of Britain during the 1940’s and 1950’s. A lot can be learned from being a leader none other than Winston Churchill, who portrayed a number of characteristics, traits and behaviors of a transformational leader.

After Churchill's tenure in India, he ran for a seat in Parliament. He spoke well, but the opposition he faced was just too strong. He lost his first try at an electoral office. Churchill ran for political office many times after this initial failure. In 1901, he won a seat in the House of Commons. From 1908-1939, he held many political offices. Some include: First Lord of the Admiralty, Minister of Munitions, Secretary for War and Air, and Chancellor of the Exchequer. But adults had trouble keeping up with his thought pattern. and his imagination off the charts. a little bit later in life Churchill enjoyed a short but active career in the British army. He joined the fourth regiment in 1895 and served in the Indian northwest, where he saw action in the fight in Omdurman in the year of 1898.
