What is personality? This is the question that we have been posing this whole semester. The textbook states personality psychology is, “the scientific study of what makes us who we are” (Miserandio, 2012, p.3). Therefore, if that is the case then personality is what makes us who who we are. How we find our own personality takes a lot of work and a lot of soul searching. I know for myself, I cannot judge my personality only from the Five Factor Model (FFM). Yes, the FFM is a good predicament of our personality, but it does not further explain why we get such scores. What I mean by this, is that we have to look at religion, culture, gender, nature vs. nurture, our self-concept, our locus of control, and how we become motivated. Even this list, is very small in comparison to how we should evaluate and discover our own personality. Personality is a very complex concept, and this is why it is very hard to accurately depict a person’s personality with just a few things.
To begin, I would like to begin with the FFM and the results I obtained doing a test called “The Big Five Project Personality Test”. After I took the test, my results were as followed: openness 12, conscientiousness 58, extraversion 27, agreeableness 27, and neuroticism 80 (Potter, 2000).Openness refers to how original and open minded we are in things such as fantasy, values, actions, feelings, and aesthesis (Miserandio, 2012, p.36). I somewhat agree with this score because I come from a very traditional family.
Personality is who an individual is, how one does things, manages events and situations, and how one describes other individuals. One 's personality can help guide an individual throughout one 's life, in addition to having power over the situation or task. Many, if not all of these factors of personality, traits, and genetics, make up who an individual is. One 's may believe an individual 's personality, differences, and individualities is the core of who an individual truly is.

No two people are alike, and no two personalities are alike. A personality is made up of different characteristics, which help to define a person. Per the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator everyone has a four-letter personality type with 16 different personality combinations. These personality types affect everyone’s personal, social and work life. My four-letter personality type is ISFJ (introvert, sensing, feeling and judgment).
One main goal of psychology has been established a model to describe and understand human personality. The five-factor model of personality is the most widely used model in describing personality types. The components of the Big Five are extraversion, openness, agreeableness, conscientiousness, and neuroticism.
According to Weinberg & Gould (1999) personality is “The characteristics or blend of characteristics that make a person unique.”
Personality is made up of the characteristic patterns of thoughts, feeling and behaviours that make a person unique (Cherry, 2015). Although no single definition is acceptable to all personality theorists, it is agreed that personality is a pattern of relative permanent traits and unique characteristics that give both consistency and individuality to a person’s behaviour (Feist and Feist, 2009).
Personality can be defined through the model used in Parker’s et al. (2004) study which includes agreeableness, conscientiousness, openness, neuroticism, and extraversion. Agreeableness is getting along with other people, conscientiousness is the ability to stay on task, openness is how a person adapts to change, neuroticism is a predisposition to negative emotions, and extraversion is the need for sensation-seeking. Together those personality dimensions describe individual differences. To measure these dimensions, a common tool used was the NEO Five-Factor Inventory. This was a self-report questionnaire containing 60 items, and a score is calculated to indicate the level of each dimension.

The Behavioral theory of personalities states that a personality is developed through our experiences, classical training methods, and observation learning. This holds more weight than the others, when we think of training methods we often think of another person with more experience training the trainee, while there are plenty of examples of this, I wondered how many people have thought that they may be training themselves subconsciously we all do it some extent. A personal example would be when I learned to text faster, my friends constantly commented on my slow texting being a millennial I felt inadequate, the only people who were considered slow at texting where “old” people I couldn’t have my peers thinking I belonged with that group, so I started texting constantly to speed up my fingers. Now it is something that is second nature, I think we do this like to ourselves those voices in our head train as much as another person.

When you think of personality, you may think of a lot of things. How a person acts or behaves, the little quirks they have, the way they think or what they like. When it’s explained on a psychological level, its much more that just what they like or enjoy doing or how they act. Personality is thought to be a combination of many things, most of these things occurring genetically, in your childhood, and subconsciously. Although some traits are learned, most of our personalities are determined in our early years or genetically pre-determined. An individual’s unique personality traits and attributes are a powerful indicator of how he/she will interact with the work environment. The difference between average and outstanding employees can often be solely personality related. My personality is influenced from my specific circumstances, my upbringing, and it is represented best through the theorists of Erik Erikson and Raymond Cattell.
To understand personality there are three main aspects that must be looked at: LArsen and Buss Definition of personality, The Six Domains of knowledge of personality, and Costa and McCrae's Five Factor Theory. In this essay I will first break down larsen and Buss definition and connect it to the domains, then connect the domains to the five factor thoery (FFT).
