Few factors are as important to human health than one’s diet. A poor diet can have devastating effects to one’s health and well-being. For this reason, there are some key components the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, along with the Department of Agriculture, suggest be part of one's eating pattern. These key components include a variety of vegetables, fruits, grains, fat-free or low-fat dairy or soy, a variety of protein foods, and oils. They also suggest limiting intakes of saturated fats, trans fats, added sugars, and sodium. Overall, the 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines suggest that it is not necessarily about each and every individual food or beverage item that is consumed, but how that plays into an entire “eating pattern” and how everyone can make small shifts within their eating pattern to maintain a healthier life and decrease chances of developing a chronic disease. With all of these factors in mind, a diet that claims to be healthier, better for the environment, and help lower chances of disease is the vegetarian diet. Today, many Americans are not doing a great job taking care of themselves and their well-being. As a result, the rates of obesity of many Americans continues to increase. Many are suffering from diseases that not only is affecting their health but also their lifestyle. Many believe that by consuming a healthier vegetarian diet not only will it help individuals maintain a healthier body but by reducing the amount of foods that contain fertilizers can protect the planet from further damage to the environment.
Dr. Michael Greger provides an eye-opening statistic regarding the link between health and nutrition when he states that, “The #1 killer in the US – heart disease – was found to be almost nonexistent in populations with diets centered around whole plant foods” (“Greger”). Even though the idea that a plant-based diet is the best option for many reasons, many groups still passionately contest it. However, recent research in nutritional and environmental science has established that a more plant-based, or vegetarian, lifestyle is the way society needs to go. Webster’s New World Dictionary defines vegetarian as, “one who eats no meat” (715). Society is showing a trend towards more people adopting plant-based eating. This trend can be seen playing out in the popular media via celebrities who openly discuss their vegetarian lifestyle choices and also in popular television shows whose characters talk about being vegetarian in the dialogue of show.
In the article ¨Should People Become Vegetarian” by ProCon.org, it states that two in three vegetarians are vitamin B12 deficient, compared to one in twenty people who eat meat. This proves that people do not need to be vegetarian.

Many enlightened and intelligent people have along with Einstein come to realize that the problems Americans face with health and the environment can be solved with simply partaking in the more compassionate lifestyle accredited to the vegetarian movement. By consuming certain foods and nutrients in one’s diet the risk factors for these health diseases can be reduced. Vegetarianism is becoming more and more popular among people in our days, particularly realizing what harm can bring the meat that people eat. According to the article Preface to "Are Meat-Based Diets Bad for the Planet?" by Ed. Amy Francis, “Those who believe that vegetarianism has a positive effect on the environment argue that the massive production of animal products for human consumption can lead to land degradation, water and air pollution, and even a change in climate. Academic research indicates that these detrimental effects accrue as we continue producing meat products.” I totally agree with the author and believe that vegetarianism can prevent many problems. Perhaps you may ask, “Is vegetarianism really a healthy diet?” Of course, vegetarianism can be a healthy diet if you follow the rules of healthy eating such as getting enough protein, eating plenty of fruits and vegetables and avoiding sugars and junk foods. In the culture of vegetarianism, people choose very carefully before they eat something. Many scientists have shown that vegetarians rarely suffer from obesity and high cholesterol levels and live longer that people who eat a lot of meat. Possibly, it influenced by the fact that among the vegetarian less smokers and more wealthy people. Typically, vegetarianism consists of not eating anything that has a beating heart. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, only around five percent of the United States’ population are vegetarians and sustain the meatless diet. The United States Department of Agriculture states that vegetarian diets can meet the recommended dietary needs of an average human(Vegetarian ProCon). Becoming a vegetarian has many advantages and depending on one’s point of view, it also has some disadvantages. When any organism is still an infant, they fail to acknowledge societal norms and decision-making, but instead, only their genetic makeup dictates their actions. Therefore, many conclusions involving inherent responses are drawn from experiments involving infants. For example, both a human baby and a lion cub possess an innate sense of hunger, which drives them to seek out nutrition in order to survive. When a hungry baby is placed in a crib with both a banana and a small rabbit (two sources of food), it immediately responds by reaching for the banana to satiate this hunger sensation. Whereas, if the lion cub, or any other animal designed to eat meat faces this situation, say sayonara to the rabbit. This example, used by many vegetarian advocates, illustrates that at the core of our species, we are designed to operate under a plant-based diet. Of course, over the span of millions of years, humans adapted to cater to changing environments, thus allowing for heavier protein diets. A lot of people in the world do not know the right amount of vitamins and minerals the human body requires to function. Without the proper nutrition the body needs, the body could possibly shut down. People should do extensive research before starting a new diet. A lot of unique and new specialized diets has surfaced in the world. Diets like, gluten free diet, vegan diet, juicing, the purple diet, and the raw diet are very popular and people need to be very cautious when starting one of these diets because these diets might not be for everyone.
