Nursing plays a very important role in healthcare. Nursing is not only about sticking people or giving medications. Nursing is a very complex field, because nurses are hands-on in patient care. Two essential jobs in nursing care are the managers and the bedside nurses. Both of these are needed to make sure the patient will receive the best care. These roles are guided by evidence-based practice, research, and theory knowledge; however, the core of nursing is based on the expected professional values that every nurse should possess.
A manager of care is a very important role in nursing. A nurse manager holds a lot of responsibility. Over time, management scientists and theorists have developed and refined the duties of a manager. Although these scientists and theorists bring a different prospective, all their works combine to formulate the duties of a manager. Henri Fayol was the first to identify the responsibilities of a manager, and Luther Gulick extended the idea with the “seven activities of management” (Marquis B. L. and Huston C.J. 2015).The seven activities were planning, organizing, staffing, directing, coordinating, reporting, and budgeting (Marquis B. L. and Huston C.J. 2015). Theorists proposed the idea of managers needing to have great human relation skills. Worker satisfaction became the challenge. There are many different roles and values within the profession of nursing. Each of these roles and values has a different job description and purpose, yet they all contain one common link. The link that connects the different roles in the nursing profession is the fact that they each rely on nursing research, theories, and evidence based practice to provide safe, quality care to patients. Without nursing research, theories, and evidence based practice, nursing care would be based on trial and error methods that often cause more harm than good to the patient.
Nursing is defined in the lesson as the care provided to restore or maintain health is the function of nursing. Care is provided to aid the human response to health and illness (Chamberlain, 2013). I find this central concept of professional nursing to be one of the most important concepts in my practice as a nurse. In order to be a good nurse we have to first and foremost nurse. I take great pride that I am a member of several professional organizations and hold certifications at the highest levels pertinent to my practice. I take the time outside of my job to maintain currency and educational sharpness above and beyond what is required of me at my job, because it matters to the people I take care of. Nurses today are required to take on an ever expansive role as a practitioner. In critical care nursing we are taking care of an ever increasing number of complex sick patients and are required to know far beyond the scope we all learned in nursing school originally. Nurse mangers is the leader of a specific department or unit of a healthcare facility. The nurse manager is responsible for recruitment and retention of the nursing staff, collaborating with other health care providers on patient care, and assisting patients and their families when needed. The nurse manager works with administration communicating and interpreting the facility’s policies and procedures to the staff. Usually with other departments in the facility, the nurse managers develop quality improvement measures tracking the patient services and care. Nurses are known as the heart of health care. Being a nurse is a demanding job that requires commitment, but does not lack rewards. A fact stated by the American Association of Colleges of Nurses claims that “Nurses comprise the largest single component of hospital staff, are the primary providers of hospital patient care, and deliver most of the nation 's long-term care” (“Nursing Fact Sheet”). With many roles throughout the healthcare system as a whole, nurses are a large, very important role that interacts with every other part of the health care system. They have great qualities that not everyone has. They are highly compassionate, caring, professional, diligent and understanding individuals. A nurse experiences people at their worst and still care for patients in a way that no one else would. All these honest points prove that nurses are the most important members of the health care system because, nurses spend the most time with patients, nurses are the managers of patient care; they are teachers and are great with conflict resolution.
