It’s complicated to know what drives individuals to pursue a journey, but there are goals set out for some people. For example, Aengus the god of love and youth looked for the glimmering girl when she had disappeared out of thin air. Farah Ahmedi is missing a leg and yet she climbed a mountain for a better life with her mother. Annie Johnson started a business that was poorly and still later on became successful so she can support her two baby boys. These people took everything they had and made it into a huge goal for themselves. For example, Aengus wanted his longing love, Farah wanted to search for a better life, and Annie was committed to support her family. These three people had a purpose for making a choice that would accomplish a goal. In the poem “The Song of Wandering Aengus” by William Butler Yeats talks about how Aengus falls in love with a girl, but suddenly loses her when she disappears as the air blows. This poem is about the desire of finding love. The author explains in a poem how Aengus finds love, however then loses his beloved. However, Aengus looks for the “glimmering girl’ after she disappears. He doesn’t give up on searching for her in the hope that he will find out where she went and kiss her on the lips. According to William he wrote “I will find out where she has gone, and kiss her lips and take her hands; and walk among dappled grass”. Aengus spent his whole life searching for something he really wanted and didn’t give up not until he found his love. Aengus never found her but he still kept looking because he knew she was still out there.
However, unlike Aengus who went on and searched for love, Annie Johnson just got divorced and works so she can support her family. Annie is an African-American woman with children, who needs a job. In New Directions Annie doesn’t work as a house cleaner but cooks meals for factory workers. At first “business was slow” but Annie would never fail her customers. Johnson wanted to be successful and she was because she proved it. As Maya Angelou shares New Directions Annie “decided to step off that road and cut me a new path.” Johnson was very careful on what she planned and yet her business overtime became successful. Maya tell the
Maya Angelou has wrote a quite a meaningful story about her grandmother Annie Johnson about her life and having a turning point and everything changed. It all starts by having a huge conflict about splitting her marriage in 1903 and ended she later became fully aware on what she put herself into. There for Annie Johnson and African-American women has to work her hardest in order to help her two small boys and make harder choices in life. According to the text on paragraph seven it states “Although business was slow, those first days Annie was determined. She balanced her appearances between the two hours of activity.” This explains how Annie was dealing with some conflits. There are more conflicts but a successful ending into the next story “Rikki-Tikki-Tavi”.
Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller focuses on the humanity of famous Greek warriors. She queues up the Iliad from a human perspective, not that of a distant and unrelated orator or that of an angry hero. By focusing on the humanity, Miller is able to capture moments of joy, anger, love, lust, and more importantly moments of flaw from a believable and relatable perspective. Achilles and Agamemnon are guilty of hubris, the word for “arrogance that scrapes the stars, for violence and towering rage as ugly as the gods,” (295) this level of pride and rage causes the fracture of the Greek army, and a fracture in the relationship between Patroclus and Achilles. Nine years into the Trojan War, Achilles and Agamemnon are reflections of each other, they are driven by the prospect of kleos and timê. The growing obsession with being an alpha-male within the army causes the two to fallout, an event that has massive repercussions and death tolls.
Annie Johnson was a woman and a mother who wanted to make a difference in her family's life by providing for them, and starting an extremely risky business that cooked meals for factory workers. She wanted to provide for her family, but not in a normal way. She devised an elaborate plan to cook meals for factory workers. The text elaborates on the statement that she didn’t want to have a normal job by stating, “Johnson “decided to step off the road and cut me a new path.”(para 4). Normal people would just stay in the crowd on the road and have a steady life, but Annie Johnson wanted to do more that that. She wanted to be that one person that didn’t follow the crowd, and get off the

Aengus had caught a trout and it had soon turned into a beautiful girl. The next quote, “Who called me by my name and ran” ( Yeats line 15 ). The girl, who was once a trout, knew his name somehow. After that incident, Aengus wanted to find her. As stated, “Though I am old with wandering. Through hollow lands and hilly lands, I will find out where she has gone“, (Yeats lines 17-19). This story, sadly did not get its happy ending. The moral of this story is to keep the best memories inside and close to the

I have goals as to why I want to further my education. I have been accepted to the University of Central Florida, where I plan on attending. I would like to study religion, go on to graduate school, and become a college professor. I had plenty of mountains to climb to get to where I am now. However, a plethora of opportunities helped me to climb those mountains.
Maya Angelo's New Direction is set in Arkansas in 1903, on the dawn of Emancipation. It tells the story of self- reliance, determination, hard work, and strength of character of a black woman. Mrs. Annie Johnson, the main character in the story, was faced with two problems. One, she was not happy in her marriage and two she had to find work. She told her husband she was unhappy and he too was unhappy and wanted to be out of it. They agreed and got divorced. Mr. Johnson left for Enid, Oklahoma to study religion. He took most of the money they had. Annie was left with the house and their two young children. Annie was faced with finding a way to provide for herself and kids. She didn't know how she was going to do it but what Annie did know was that she was not going down the road of being a domestic, taking care of other people's children and leave her "precious babies". She also knew that she would not get a job at, the cotton gin or the lumber mill, the two factories in her neighborhood. Annie said, "I looked up the road I was going and back the way I come, and since I wasn't satisfied, I decided to step off the road and cut me a new path." She decided to make her own way and that since she could not work in the
The short story “ New Directions” by Maya Angelou is about how you need to preserve in order to get the thing you want in life. Mrs. Annie Johnson had a tough life. She had two toddlers, not so much money and a disastrous marriage. Later in the story her life slowly begins to progress but none of her success would have happened if she didn’t preserve.
I believe that human being’s all have an underlining purpose in life and it is within their nature to realize their potential and fulfill their goals. Human beings are driven to seek wholeness in their lives and that will always be a continuing journey for most humans. Humans adapt to life’s changes as they encounter various challenges. How one handles those various situations; will directly affect their behavior and personality. I believe humans are capable of dictating the outcome of their destiny.
