Assignment #3
Keelan Simpson (Sports Coordinator) – Monroe County YMCA, Bloomington, IN
Keelan Simpson is the Sports Coordinator of the Bloomington YMCA and his main responsibilities consist of running all sports programs at the YMCA, hiring the correct employees/staff to coach or help run the different sports programs. The different sports programs include youth summer camps, youth seasonal sports, and adult basketball leagues. The YMCA is a global organization that serves all individuals of a community, allowing them to have access to recreational sports, fitness programs and many other health opportunities.
What positions do you hire/allowed to hire?
Volunteer seasonal coaching positions for youth sports. The biggest hires that Keelan is responsible for are the summer camp positions. Summer camp positions are important because they are employed all summer and will be working with kids the whole time. The summer camp positions are 40 hours per week, essentially full time employees. Keelan also hires outside contract work such as referees for the adult basketball league.
Steps a candidate has to go through in order to get an interview/How to set up on-site interviews?
Keelan and his staff typically go to career fairs and job fairs around the Bloomington area to promote the YMCA and land potential candidates. Candidates apply through an application that will be sent to Keelan from the YMCA administrative assistant. The assistant
athletes in an effort to prevent injuries. They work in amateur and professional sports. Once injuries occur, the athletic trainer is required to evaluate the problem and get the athlete the proper medical treatment. He or she also makes sure that athletes are physically ready and able to play after an injury. Athletic trainers set up physical conditioning programs for athletes, work with equipment managers to make sure that playing and training areas are in working order, and also work with physicians in developing and implementing a rehabilitation program for injured players. Athletic trainers work in offices, treatment
Many people are more active today than they were many years ago. Injury prevention and diagnosis plays a big role in today’s society. Preventing an injury is important for many athletes all over the world, and for people that are physically active. Preventing injuries can benefit an athlete in the long run. Athletic trainers help athletes and physically active people stay healthy for what they do on a daily basis.
The YMCA has a very clear and concise mission statement. Their mission is "to put Christian principles into practice through programs thta build healthy spirit, mind, and body for all".
I had a hard time finding a career. All the careers I came across did not interest me at all. Until a friend came up with the idea of the career of athletic training. That is when I started my research and my interest grew greater.
The audience in this is the people who do not think that cheer is a sport. A specific gender would be mostly boys. I often find myself into specific arguments all the time whether or not cheer is a sport. A specific age group is normally between the age of 10-20. The average reader is anyone who does not think that cheer is a sport, or that it is fairly easy. For example, in this common situation here at snow the football players always complain how hard their practice is. They expect us to sit down and feel sorry for them. If we say anything about how hard ours is, they get all offended and argue that cheer is not a sport.
To satisfy my curiosity and gain a broad understanding of athletic training, I chose to interview my boss, Pete Stevens. Pete is employed by Physiotherapy Associates, a nationwide corporation that specializes in physical/occupational therapy, athletic training, and fitness/sports training. He has worked there for three years. He is currently the Head
Educational programs at the YMCA have featured different content. Recently, I got the chance to discuss educational programs at the YMCA with two members. The first individual worked in the childcare area and also regularly used the fitness center. She told me that she enjoyed working at the YMCA because it was an “easy and fun job”. She said that she worked there with two of her friends and that she was friendly with the rest of the staff. When I asked her about her training she told me about the ideals that she was trained to promote. She said that it was made clear that she should strive to be fair, honest, compassionate, and respectful of all the staff members and the children. She also mentioned that she was to speak with children whenever
Athletic Compliance Office activities are not always documented and existing documentation is not complete, as well as not consistently utilized in the same manner for all sports:
I would like to become a certified athletic trainer through the Linfield program because of my love for sports and medicine. I was involved in a number of sports throughout my life and have gone through a number of injuries. There is one injury in particular that sparked my interest in athletic training. I was playing soccer at Chemeketa Community College when I broke my foot. I spent many hours with the athletic trainer there Julie Speck (PT/ATC/R), who gave me the opportunity to work with her in the training room. She also sparked another interest and that is to get my dual credentials in athletic training and physical therapy. I see myself using both degrees in the future like my mentor Julie Spark (PT/ATC/R). She works in a hospital as a physical therapist and is contracted out to Chemeketa Community College as an athletic trainer. This is exactly what I plan to do with both my degrees.

A lot of parents think that sports are too hard and too physical for teens and children, but sports are, actually, the best thing that will happen to these minors. Sports are a huge influence on children and teenagers, because participating in sports can actually influence the future of young men and women of today's generation. For the children and teenagers that start to play at a young age, sports can help children develop physical skills and learn how to work as a part of a team.
This study deals with high school athletics and their long-term effect in the lives of those who participate; it also deals with the positive and negative aspects of athletics during high school, and the treatment of those who participate. This study was conducted with qualitative data obtained from five personal interviews with previous high school athletes. These five people come from a range of places, ages, and experience. Conclusions are that participation in high school athletics is a contributor to a better social life and experience during high school. Good friends and influences are obtained through the pursuit of high school athletics. The long-term effects
During my time in professional experience I gained a lot of experience in the field of athletic training. I got the chance to work with the softball and track teams, in practice and games. As I reflect on overall experience I learned a lot about the profession of athletic training and now have a better understanding of the profession. I see great improvement within myself but also areas where I need to improve.
I feel like I had a learning experience with the YMCA. I learned a lot about myself that I can use in my professional life. For example, the YMCA and the people I worked with did not hand me anything to do, instead they challenged me to do what I thought was best for the organization. I am a person who loves to be given guidelines, deadlines, and instructions, so without these I was a little lost at first. I learned that as a health educator I need to go out and do what I feel like is best for my community. I know how to do needs assessments, implement, and evaluate a program, and no one is going to walk me through that anymore. This was my first ‘out side of school’ health education experience, which helped me learn to be more independent
