When most of us hear about knitting, we might automatically picture our grey-haired grandmothers sitting on the couch casting stitches onto their knitting needles, but since recently, this perception has started to shift. In this essay, I will look at the many ways in which the subculture of knitting helps reduce anxiety in society. First, discussing how it helps to create community, second, it allows us to make time for ourselves, thirdly, it helps people express themselves.
In his essay, Twain discusses the flaring hoopskirt and how individuals were appalled at first. Six months later, everyone admires hoopskirts and no one laughs anymore. However, the hoopskirt has disappeared in the same way. One woman who abandoned this fashion influenced others to abandon it as well. This demonstrates that society establishes habits, fashions, and trends only to please others and will abandon those same habits, fashions, and trends to again please others.
There are so many different things and people to watch when observerving a specific community for analysis. I chose my community observation to be during a high school football game. I will be discussing my observations of the community that I watched including demographics, ages of those at the game, and their possible socioeconomic class. I will also be describing the folkways, customs and mores observed. This paper will also express the forces influencing fashion, the fashion forms reflected by the wearers, and the fundamental attitudes of dress that were observed by the people at the football game.
“Anxiety is the signal of danger which mobilizes the human organism’s resources at all levels of functioning in the interests of conservation, defense, and self- preservation.” (Anxiety 1) If a person suffers from anxiety there is a major loss of control and then an attempt to regain that control because of a fear that they have. Anxiety disorders are one of the most frequently occurring mental disorders in the United States. However, anxiety disorders are not only found in the United States. They are found throughout the world. They just happen to be most predominating in the United States. In this paper, I will be discussing the generalized anxiety disorder and how if effects society today.
In life, there are many times where an individual may feel alone. Personally, this past week can attest to that notion. Moving into a college dorm, saying goodbye to my loved ones, and taking on a new chapter in my life, have all been accompanied by a new set of emotions that I have never felt before: homesickness, freedom, peer-pressure. However, looking around everyone seems happy, and it feels as if I am trapped in a space that no one else appears to be in. But, internally they may be battling the same struggles that I am. That is what can be drawn from “The Wisdom of Sociology: Sam Richards at TedxLacador,” the idea that behind the facade, our personal struggles are all connected.
The definition of a subculture is a culture within a culture where a group develops distinctive norms and values that are different from those of the mainstream culture.
empowerment my blue corduroy gives me is bigger than anything I have every felt before. It’s not just the gold pins that line the inside, the state and chapter stitched in corn gold on the back, or even my name and the offices I have held on the front. It’s all of that and more. I have made thousands memories in blue corduroy that will stick with me for a life time. While wearing my FFA jacket, I have seen the lives of people change because of my work or the empowerment they also get while wearing it. My FFA jacket has allowed me to grow and find myself to become the person I am to day.
I have always liked fiber and assorted yarn. I am like a child in a candy store whenever I go to the yarn store. The hanks of fiber arranged by color mesmerize me, calling for me to bring them home, to see what I will create with them. I love how the yarn store is organized by color and wool textures. They challenge me, taunting me, begging me to turn the colorful skein into a one of a kind handcrafted creation. Will this colorful skein of yarn become knotted to make an afghan, a sweater, socks or hats?

Today’s society suggest that solitude is something to avoid. Being alone is looked down upon and is considered a bad thing. Instead of loneliness, we value communication. In her essay, “When Collaboration Kills Creativity,” by Susan Cain, Cain discusses how creative people tend to be introverts and that solitude is the key to innovation. Furthermore, she explains how society favors working in groups which has become a necessity in many settings. Similarly, in “The end of solitude,” by William Deresiewicz, Deresiewicz points out how the use of technology destroys time for ourselves and is used to counteract the fear of being alone. He emphasizes how solitude helps us listen to our own thoughts and for spiritual growth. In the past, solitude

Literature found in relation to Allison Davis' socialized anxiety theory states that socialized anxiety is experienced by adolescents at an increased rate due to "...new developmental and behavioural tasks, and increased awareness" (G.Chaudhary, 2014, p.11) . Therefore, according to Chaudhary, the presence of socialized anxiety theory is only present in modern society, as it is brought on due to recent developments in education and society. Due to these reasons, adolescents are now aiming to achieve new, "socially desirable" goals, regarding both education, and acceptance within social groups. Assimilating with peers can also be a contributor to socialized anxiety theory, as the need to fit in with same age cohorts may result in pressure. This
I peer around my closet - a collection of seemingly materialistic things. Although cotton and polyester surround me, I see much more than that - I see cotton and polyester infused with self-expression, sewn with memories and printed with reminders of who I am. As a result, this daily trip requiring me to walk .003 miles (roughly 18 feet) turns into a daily reminder of the person I've grown to become. As baggy blue jeans and a
I arrived at CITYterm raw, with my inner-self wrapped in a cocoon-like shell. In the first weeks, “The Things I Carry” was assigned to encourage us to reveal ourselves and further the building of our nascent community. A product of the last nine months, my draft read trivially, sharing only that by which I cared to be judged. I described myself by geography, activities, and relationships: Pittsburgh, Shady Side, ice hockey, rowing in the off season for fitness, Friendship Circle, my friends since kindergarten, and family. As the first authors read their stories on that Friday night, my discomfort gave way to an awakening. I recognized that we are not merely defined by the characteristics of our exoskeleton, but by our relationships to our surroundings, the people inhabiting
Take a moment and think about a time when you felt overly worried or nervous. How did you deal with these emotions? What activities or behaviours did you engage in? Did they help you calm down?
