Throughout my academic and personal career I have always had a fascination with subcultures. One of the most amazing things would like to know more about in the sociology field is the study of how people reject the primary society’s ideas about what values, beliefs and traditions they should follow. Within these subcultures we find the subculture of gangs. Every community has to deal with gangs in one way or another. Mostly we hear about gangs in big cities but there are gangs in every state of the United States of America. The history of gangs has been dated in America from the beginning with the gangs of New York City that were controlled by the politicians and used to advance many people social status.

Subculture refers to a minority of individuals who adhere to different rules, dress codes and lifestyle choices from mainstream culture. Throughout this essay the traditional definitions of subcultures, that mainly concentrate on class and style as their main features, will be looked at and explained. Allen University have several subcultures on campus. The Greek industries are consider subcultures. A subculture is a group that have values and morals that are completely different from normal individuals. They value the standards of whether something good or bad. Each Greek organization on campus have an assured procedure of way of doing things. We have fraternities and Sorority that are Aka’s, Delta, Zeta’s, Sigma’s, Omega’s and a few more. No, I am not a member of any subculture on campus because, I am not fascinated in those things. We as people are an associated with some kind of subculture because we are humans. Students in high school usually find it difficult to make a connection with their teachers and students usually view teachers as the “person that gave too much homework.” This way of thinking changes after a few months of school and students begin to accept the style of their teachers. Some teachers earn a reputation of being tough or impossible while others earn a reputation of being cool. Although Mr. Mike and Mrs. White are both demanding teachers at our school, their teaching style, their expectations for students, and the difficulty of the work they assign.

In modern society, youths are encouraged to stand out and as a result, this ‘subculture population’ is ever increasing. Such mass media labelling has resulted in such a creation of these youth subcultures that evidentially exist and they have become mainstream. Changes that occur within society and mainstream however lead to the emergence of new subcultures whereby old ones change or disappear. Such transition is apparent between these two films, from the ‘mods’ within the 1960’s to ‘chavs’ and hoodies today. The two films are evidently driven by their dramatic media representations of youth subcultures.

Culture is a set of rules for how a society deals with its problems, whether they’re social, economic, political or otherwise. Culture is important to understand because it consists of many interrelated aspects that mold and change together. These rules help give you an emic, or insider’s perspective of a community of people and allow you to more precisely understand the thought processes behind why people do what they do. You can ask members of a particular culture about their cultural rules, but it’s often quite difficult to string together how or why a particular value is important. Instead, you can observe the behavior of a given population and reconstruct the cultural rules, or even go further and use the consequences of behavior to determine the actions that caused it and thus the societal premises. Interested in the cultural rules of Clemson students, I decided to try to reconstruct them. Because the behavior of students is readily accessible, I observed student behavior rather than asking the students directly or observing consequences.

Due to the war ending in 1945, all families were able to settle down and have children. This led to the baby boom of 1945-1960s where there was an abundance of youths in the 1950s. In the 50s there were almost 100 babies born a minute putting a threat to over population (Howell.G, 1975). From this, the teenager was invented (Kotarba J A, 2012) where many different subcultures had formed, each with individual styles and influenced by figures in film, music and TV. Glossy fashion magazines such as Vogue and Seventeen were also becoming very popular so youths were able to easily see what the future held for trends and what clothes they should and shouldn’t be wearing. Teenage girls and boys were now recognised as a new consumer and when designers started to realise this they set up boutiques inside department stores (Buxbaum.G, 1999). They sold simpler designs at cheaper prices where the younger generation were able to create their own style rather than copying their parents, for example ranges of clothes would come out specifically targeted at young girls for dances where they would have a large choice in dresses to buy. British teenagers had twice as much money to spend on what they liked compared to their parents (Breward.C, 1999). This meant that a new market opened up for retailers with a great economic dependence on this particular age group.

As usual, I was working out at a gym. I greeted my eyes with people at the gym and focused on working out listening to music. And through this Urban Sociology course, I have been given an assignment that subject is ‘Subculture’. I never noticed bodybuilder before I got this assignment. While I was thinking about what I research, I could notice people who are working out at the same gym as me. I was thinking that I can find subculture among the people who work out because working out is definitely mainstream culture now. At that time, I realized how about the bodybuilder, they are more special, they take steroids and they work out too much which means ‘extraordinary’. I started to notice bodybuilder, but I could not see a lot of bodybuilders who seems like taking steroids. It is not a common thing so it is obviously subculture. Especially The one reason I really think bodybuilding is subculture is that this is not just a sport which means it has a very different value and a unique set of customs. For example, using pharmaceutical is not a common thing to average people. It is kind of drugs that especially bodybuilders take for their physical. They pursue physique perfection including huge amounts of muscle and low levels of fat. They are very easily recognizable so we can distinguish between bodybuilders who take steroids and who do not.
