During high school we are taught valuable information that will help us define our career and ultimately what we are going to to do for our whole life. While most courses are offered and taught some valuable skills do not get the same amount of attention as others do. One course in particular is computer science or the teaching of HTML. HyperText Markup Language, commonly abbreviated as HTML, is the standard markup language used to create web pages. Along with CSS, and JavaScript, HTML is a cornerstone technology used to create web pages, as well as to create user interfaces for mobile and web applications. (“HTML”) The teaching of computer science or HTML is a valuable skill that goes unnoticed in most high schools nowadays. By not teaching or even offering these classes, schools are limiting the amount of information that could be learned by all students. The students are the most affected by the school 's inability to provide the necessary classes to learn HTML, because learning how to code could not only change a student 's life, but the whole world. In our ever changing computer run world the schools are struggling to keep up with the information let alone equip its students with the necessary know how. The main reason coding is not taken as a class or even offered at most times is, because schools do not count them towards graduation. Computer Science is critical for developing programming knowledge, digital literacy, and improving students’ problem solving skills. Teaching kids how to program exposes them to a field that they otherwise wouldn’t have even considered. The problem with teaching programming in K-12 schools is the lack of faculty. In fact, maybe one in ten American high schools have a Computer Science teacher. The number is even lower for schools serving grades 1-6 (Guzdial 1). The states that already require Computer Science as a high school graduation requirement can complete the class by learning how to use CAD or Photoshop. This is due to teacher not being qualified enough to teach real Computer Science. Raising the standards of preexisting Computer Science classes would be problematic in that sense (Guzdial 1). There is also no set, clear curriculum to teach Computer Science in high school. Because of this, it would be hard to teach it to special needs students (Guzdial 1).
Imagine you are applying for a big job. It is the job you have always wanted, but then you find out that your favorite job requires a partial knowledge of coding. Why were you not taught that in school? There is a big debate going on whether or not coding should be taught in schools. According to the article, Teaching Children to Code: Overview, “Also known as “computer programming,” coding is the process of writing instructions for a computer using a specialized programming language” (Crelin). Kids need this skill, but are not getting exposure to it. Coding should be taught in schools because of the great benefits it has.
Education has traditionally been very slow to react and adjust to changing times. Teaching to the test has become the standard in many classrooms in the USA and Canada due to the ongoing push for government accountability and standardization. Students are much more in tune with technologies than most of their teachers. The teacher’s role is changing in scope the shift is more to the teacher as a facilitator of learning. Before the creation of the Internet, the most popular and widely used way of teaching was mainly with books and lectures, limiting the speed and efficiency of information to learn, while also limiting the number of units given in a school year. With the Internet, teachers were able to discover and teach topics easily, leading to quicker lessons and topics as they use the web browser and online sources to benefit the speed of the lessons as well as better the students in different ways to educate. In addition to teachers using the Internet, students also greatly used it to help with homework, to fully understand a topic, to help with projects, and to communicate with their teachers. My self initiative and eagerness for continuous improvement has lead me to complete online courses to further my skills & understanding of HTML where I have been able to apply these skills to my freelancing company.
One important reason that kids should study coding is that they will better understand how computers work. Computers such as smartphones, tablets, and laptops are part of everyday life. By possessing a basic comprehension of how computers operate, they will more completely comprehend the world in which they live.
An important project that is currently a significant part of my life is the creation of an educational website that promotes learning around in school and the community by making resources that promote a high level learning experience and intellectual achievement. In my high school, we have a vigorous curriculum and a highly competitive atmosphere. With such expectations, many students find it critical to find a learning source they can trust and achieve high with. Many students also have trouble learning the content of different rigorous courses such as Advanced Placement courses but lack the capability to learn individually and need a reliable outside source. To fulfill this need, I decided to lead a project and create a website called Revolutionary Education (RevEd) that would help students of my school and a lot of schools around the country be able to actively challenge the difficult courses and learning material in America’s high school curriculum.

Education is one of the most important professions in the working world. Technology has done many things for us in today’s society especially for education and schools. Technology in the school system has impacted the students and teachers in many positive ways, including virtual field trips, testing tips, teacher resources, class web sites, and lesson plans. With computer use in our schools, we have access to many different sources and various types of learning.
Being proficient in using technology will be a prerequisite for almost any employment for younger students. It is the school’s job to prepare many of these kids for employment, and that is especially true for the lower socioeconomic areas where students with computers at home are rare. Eisenberg and Johnson describe this basic skills education as the “laundry list” approach to computer education. By ‘list” they mean isolated skills, such as word processing, or searching the Internet. “Students need to be able to use computers and other technology flexibly, creatively and purposefully. All learners should be able to recognize what they need to accomplish, determine whether a computer will help them to do so, and then be able to use the computer as part of the process of accomplishing their task.”1
