Once known as a quiet and peaceful religion, the general perception of people from other religions and most of the world upon Islam is quite distorted. Islam - A Highly Controversial Sensitive Issue in Today's World: Examination of Misconceptions and Beliefs

By definition, Islam is a religion of those who obey the doctrines of the Prophet Muhammad. Muhammad, who in the 7th century lived in Arabia, initiated a religious movement that throughout the Middle East was supported by the Arabs. Today, not only in Middle East origins, Islam has adherents, where it is the dominant religion in all countries (Non-Arab, and Arab), but also in other parts of Africa, Asia and, of course, as well as in the United States. Those who are loyal to Islam are called Muslims. The Sunni, Shiite conflict in Iraq started long before the ruling of Saddam Hussein, but when Hussein became Prime Minister of the country the conflict between the two religious sects was taken to a new level. Right when Hussein gained full power, under his control, began years of persecution of the Shiite Muslims in the country. But, before this happened, the conflict was based upon Muhammad and who was to rule after he had died. When Muhammad had died there were many disputes on who should succeed the Prophet Muhammad after his death in 632. Shiites believed that the prophet’s son-in-law, Ali, was to be the successor. Both consider the Koran the word of God. But, devoutness and religious practice distinguish between the two sects. Religion, in my words, is a term used to describe a personal set of religious attitudes, beliefs, and practices but “the groups, practices and systems that people identify as "religions" are so diverse that it is no easy task to bring them all under one simple definition” (Anonymous. "What Is Religion? Definitions and Quotes). Religion is considered to be a very important part of life; even people who choose to not practice a religion agree that it is.  No matter what religion it is that you decided to practice, the set of beliefs in that religion will regulate your behavior and provide you with hope and a reason for life. There are indeed a great amount of religions such as Christianity, Catholicism, Buddhism, Hindu, Islam and so on, but Islam is the religion I have chose to do research on.

Muslims have six major beliefs unlike Christians having only the three major beliefs. They believe in God or Allah, which is God in Arabic. They are also strong believers in Angels, such as the arch Angel Gabriel. Muslims also believe in their holy books that were revealed to the prophet Muhammad by God. They also believe in the prophets mentioned in Christianity; Adam, Abraham, Moses, and David. They too believe in Jesus, but not in the way Christians do, which is where some conflicts or misconceptions happen. They believe in Jesus as a prophet, but not the Son of God like Christians believes. Throughout the world, the depictions and realities of Muslims are extremely diverse. However, the way in which all Muslims practice and worship remains very similar. Despite the devastating effects of European colonialism on Islam and the cultural identity of Muslims, Islam is the second largest religion in the world. In this essay I will argue that although European colonialism and modernization has had a devastating impact, Islam and the cultural identity of Muslims still remains intact and has drawn attention to the power of Islam in politics and society.

The religion of Islam dates back to the 7th century CE and the life of its founder, Muhammad of Mecca, in Saudi Arabia. Islam is an Arabic word meaning: making something safe and secure, making something sound and whole, entering into peace and tranquility, and surrendering to something other than oneself. A follower of Islam is called a Muslim. In the religion of Islam, it requires the belief in certain core tenets, which include the articles of faith and the five pillars of worship. These two combined, form the Islamic creed.

It is interesting to note that in the religion of Islam today, there is a general that women are considered to be oppressed and deprived from becoming successful and powerful women. There is a claim within the Muslim community that Islam helped to elevate the status of woman with the creation of the religion in 610 A.D. The Muslim woman in Islam, specifically the married Muslim woman is not protected in Islam through the Quran. They are not considered to be of equal status of their male counterparts.. Many people in Islam believe that women are supposed to be seen and not heard. A woman in their opinion has no “voice” within the religion and are not on equal footing as men. It is my belief that due to the strict teachings of the Quran and Hadith, the status of women within the religion has placed restrictions and limitations on them. Their position in society has not improved or elevated. Women in Islam have no more religious freedoms today than they had before.

What was the basic message of Islam, and why was it able to expand so successfully?

ONE verse from the Quran: “[Believers], argue only in the best way with the People of the Book, except those of them who act unjustly. Say, ‘We believe in what was revealed to us and in what was revealed to you; our God and your God is one [and the same]; we are devoted to Him’.” Quran 29:46

All three articles have several things in common but also have several thing which distincts them from the others. Lawrence, Pratt, and Meyer-Lee all share a different idea of how the tales in the canterbury tales were written. They all have different arguments on how the ordering and the editing of the tales were. Some of them Along with that they also argue about the manuscripts and the order that the manuscripts can be in due not knowing dates on when it was written. Furthermore, they also introduce the idea of having discussions of the tales because they don’t just want their audience to read the tales, but they also want hear assumptions and open more discussion.

Beliefs are important in Islam. Right beliefs about God, the universe, and humanity is of primary concern to Muslims. The Qur’an, the sacred text of Islam states, "Righteous is he who believes in Allah and the Last Day and the Angels and the Scriptures and the Prophets" (2:177). Belief in these doctrines, as well as many others, are important to Muhammad 's followers, both past and present. On November 20th I had the opportunity to attend to a Muslim Mosque in which I learned a lot. Not only did I learn what Muslims believe in but I was able to watch how they pray and what their day of service consists of.
