Project Description
The United States of America has a bad reputation abroad when it comes to what Americans like to eat. When people think about American food, the first image pops in their mind is –McDonald! But as we all know, the average McDonald’s meal contains so much sodium, unhealthy fat, sugar and empty carbs, it’s staggering. It is the exact opposite of what any doctor or nutritionist would consider a healthy diet. However, there are still numerous of people eating fast food because it is quick, easy, and cheap. Or they don’t know what else they can eat. Americans food is far inferior to the same foods in other nations. Many foreigners think that American has nothing else to eat besides FAST FOOD. However, THIS IS NOT TRUE!
USA is a multi-culture society with over hundreds of races of people. We have much more food than McDonald. We have Jewish matzo-ball soup and the heaving pastrami on rye, usually served with a crunchy pickle. We have Mexican tacos are served either norteño (straight-up beef, best lashed with spicy salsa), with sesos (brains) or, for the New Age construction guy, with tofu. We also have Chinese kung po chicken and Korean barbeque!
However, many people live in New York for many decades but never tried food outside their own culture. They may not know where to find best Mexican food, or cannot read Chinese menu. Many people are afraid of trying those “weird” food because don’t know with the cooking process or what ingredient are used. Or many
In an article written by Amy S. Choi entitled, “What Americans can Learn From Other Food Cultures,” Choi discusses food in ways that pertain to ones culture. Today, our younger generation has become less thankful for simple, traditional foods and more wanting of foods prepared in less traditional ways, almost as if, “the more outlandish the better.” Choi mentioned in her article that, “those slightly younger have been the beneficiaries of the restaurant culture exploding in Shanghai” (Choi, Amy. “What Americans Can Learn From Other Food Cultures.” Ideastedcom. 18 Dec. 2014. Web. 17 June 2015) being from America I agree with her statement. Food in many cultures has become a status symbol; I believe that dining in expensive restaurants that serve
America is truly the Fast Food Nation, besieged with unhealthy, but tantalizing food choices on a regular basis.
We have Spanish, French, German, Scot/Irish, and African. We have been called the melting pot of the world by the history books. With all of those different cultures, there coms their heritage and cuisine. All over the United States there are different family owned restaurants. They all have a different styles of cooking. Those styles spread all over the nation and into other households. My family does a lot of Italian cooking and Irish cooking because that is where our decedents are from. My dad is a very god cook and makes a lot of fancy dishes. My mom makes a lot of pasta because her mom taught her all about it. America is very diverse when it comes to food and that is good because there is always something new to
To begin with, Pollan describes that there isn’t a real “American” food culture. He says “We have never had a national food culture in the United States. There’s really no such thing as “American food.” (Fast-food hamburgers don’t count.)” (92) Because of that, we have little guide lines and traditions.
First, no matter where you are food is an indispensable component of our nation's cultural identity. . If you're ponder, it’s not all spaghetti and garlic bread far from it. Despite of America’s size and variety, American cooking varies greatly by region. Go and try out foods
Culture is a big thing here in the United States, it’s what defines a person. Having cultures from other countries is a huge advantage to the country, knowing different religions, foods, teachings, history is beneficial to the country. It benefits the country because it’s something different, and different is not always bad; it’s a new way to learn and fix the mistakes. Hiffingpos.com says “Across the board, be it Korean, Ethiopian, or Armenian food, most traditional cuisines emphasize a diet of whole grains, many vegetables, and good fats. As Pollan affirms, there is a very low incidence of ‘first world’ diseases like diabetes and heart disease among people eating traditional diets. As a society, we are greatly informed by the presence of immigrant communities that bring their traditional cuisines to this country. There is much that we have learned and much more that we must continue to learn from immigrants regarding our diets.” Every time you go to New York especially in the suburbs you will see food stands on the sidewalk. Many of those food stands are Hispanics: Dominicans, Puerto Ricans, Cubans, and Mexicans. Those small businesses are
In the United States of America, slavery has been abolished formally on December 6, 1865 through the 13th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. The U.S. Constitution has also established the fundamental law, method of governing, and rights of individuals. However, what if I told you that there is a certain group of people who are unjustifiably stopped, searched, and arrested by law enforcement, governed by a different set of laws which are more strict, in addition to the justice system that further dictates their lives after release and all this because of their race and ethnicity. This was the reality of the five black and hispanic teens in the Central Park jogger case, the people of color who cannot afford a prominent attorney, the people
Foreign foods in the United States represent the food culture of its country of origin. Examples include pizza from Italy, tacos from Mexico, and dumplings from China. These foods have been introduced in America and they blended in with American culture, causing these foods to eaten on a daily basis. Some foods that originate from different countries have been adapted and been called “American style”. Pizza, for example, is from Italy, but Americans created their own twist on pizza, and today, there is cooked New York style pizza.
During the 1800s, the United States of America underwent some drastic changes. President Jefferson introduced a simple idea of expansion with the Louisiana Purchase and the Lewis and Clark Expedition; President Madison allowed the country to slip into the war of 1812 after complications with the impressment of American seaman by British navy in the Great War during Jefferson’s time. After the war, an “Era of Good Feelings” promoted national unity and Marshall’s supreme court decided many cases that promoted power of the national government over the states. The Monroe Doctrine told European powers that they must not interfere with events in the Western Hemisphere, and the creation of the national bank also took place during this time.
The food of the United States reflects the country’s history through its strong cultural influences. The colonization of the United States caused the introduction of many meals and cooking styles to the regions in America (Hanson). These styles have continued to expand into the 19th and 20th centuries because of the continuous amounts of immigrants that have come to the United States from various countries. American cuisine has always been changing, absorbing all of the new influences from other cultures as all of the new immigrants arrived, married and fused their traditions (Carter). There is a wide variety of foods available in the United States that is influenced by the English, Native American, Dutch, Italian, German, Asian, and Irish
Food is one of the greatest characteristics that defines where someone comes from. It’s how people bring a “piece of home” with them to the United States. For instance, the stereotypes that people have on Mexican food is outrageous, people think that burritos and tacos are all they have to offer. As more restaurants began to open up, Mexican food became part of the US. There are foods that have been around for so long that they aren’t considered part of a culture anymore, “These days... sales of tortilla chips trump potato chips; and tacos and burritos have become so ubiquitously “American,” most people don’t even consider them ethnic.” (Laboy). It’s important that latin foods are incorporated into the country, but once they’re incorporated
Two countries situated in different continents with many differences between them. The United State of America situated on the continent of North America and Nepal is an exact opposite of North America, when it’s day in The United State of America during the same time it 's night in Nepal. Country of Nepal is a very tiny country located between China and India where many people are unknown about it. There are many differences between two countries USA and Nepal and I have decided to write a topic about Education, which is the main major factor that differ two countries with each other. There are three major points inside the education and they are Education resources available for the student, Rules that student has to follow, and their
McDonalds restaurants are the best example of that, they keep the “American way” no matter where they have branches at. McDonalds in the Middle East, India, and China and all over the world they strictly sell sandwiches, fries and burgers. We will not hear or find that one McDonalds restaurant in the Arabian Gulf Region have a “Big Mac over rice”, even though that literally anything over rice would be awesome for Arabian Gulf people. However, it would seem weird to them, because as all of them grow up and knowing that McDonalds is an American restaurant, which supposed to have that American
The United States of America continues to confront a lack of electorate participation in political elections, which has seen the number decline to around 58 percent in the 2012 presidential election. In the state that has been seen by many as the template for a liberal democracy what explains the absence of participation by its citizen in one of the most fundamental exercises in democracy. With each attempt to included marginalized sectors of society – the 19th Amendment passed in 1920 giving women universal suffrage, the 1965 Voting Rights Act protecting African-Americans right to vote, and the 26th Amendment giving 18 year old the right to vote – voter percentage turnout has not increase and data actually shows a slight decrease in certain instances. Countless efforts to explain the absence of a large portion of the population concentrates on single ideas as the cause. I turn to rational choice theory as the main determination factor, which brings many of the single causes together, of whether an individual decides to cast a vote and participate as an electorate member of society.
The United States of America is a very popular country that everyone is familiar with, but for me this place is not only just ordinary, it was the second home for me and for my family since 2012. One day I was playing in the park with my brother suddenly, our father came to us and said that I have a surprise for you both. It was a festive season at that time so we thought it might be some clothes or any kind of gifts because we have a tradition in our country that in every festive season parents used to buy gifts for their children. As soon as, he said surprise I started searching the gift here and there but I can’t find it. He was staring at us and laughing because we were so excited to find out the surprise. After few minutes, he came to us and said that it is the biggest gift for all of us not only for you my children. After that we both brother and sister stare each other and started thinking what it could be. We were so curious to find out. I was asking him many question to find out but the answer was unexpected. I have never thought of going to other country. Surprise was unbelievable so I was asking him the same question like hundred times. I was 15 years old when I came to the United States. When I came to the United States I came to Virginia states. It was the first time that I travelled to a different country. On the other side, I was sad too because I was leaving my mother land, friends and families. United States is such a diverse country that when I came here
