The 2010 Institute of Medicine (IOM) report titled “The Future of Nursing” discusses the vision for the future of nursing as part of the growing health care force. The outlined vision of practice builds on the fact that nursing has the largest number of members in health care. According to the IOM there are more than 3 million nurses in the United States. As such, the IOM outlined a series of steps in which nurses can take on a greater role. Search Method Search was conducted in the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine Library using search engine: PubMed, Embase, and CINHAL. In addition, the internet was searched to locate articles that are published by professional nursing organizations and government agencies. Finally, a hand search was conducted by reading through the citation from the online literature result. The time frame was from 2011 to 2016. Inclusion/Exclusion Inclusion: Published year from 2011-2016. Articles must be in English and must address an accelerated nursing program. Exclusion: Not in English, accelerated program other than nursing. Key words: second degree, non nursing, Masters Entry, accelerated program Search Result A total of 35 articles were located and reviewed. Title review, abstract review and total article review was completed. Of those, only six met the inclusion criteria because the articles addressed an accelerated program in nursing. Three of the articles discussed the characteristic of an accelerated nursing program. Two articles discussed the students’ perspective, and one article addressed the views of the faculty and the students. In 2010, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) report, The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health, issued a call for academic progression with two specific goals for 2020: “The report’s authors reasoned that although associate degree nursing education is less costly and provides important upward mobility for diverse populations, higher degrees in nursing yield significant benefits for patients, employers, and communities” (Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, 2013).
Within (Young, Acord, Schuler & Hansen’s, 2014) article, it discusses the poor funding that the public healthcare is receiving. The shortage of the nursing faculty to teach new nurses is also growing. The challenges that the public healthcare system is experiencing is cause for concern on how to keep new nurses from leaving the field and/or to encourage these newer nurses to move into the academic area. The Quad Council created a paper in which they addressed the nursing shortage and put forth 18 recommendations to try and solve this issue. The issue of diversity also made an appearance in regards to persons of color and males within the nursing field. A study called Raising the Bar was put to test as WCN Scholars tried to make a 15% increase of C/PH nurses in specific
