Uber, one of the most successful startups in the world with over $50 billion value, is regarded as revolutionizing ways of transportation. Uber makes transportation cheaper and more convenient and helps to create unique job opportunities for drivers. Present in 537 cities around the world, Uber application has changed the way people use transportation. Uber story started on a night at Paris when the two co-founders Travis Kalanick and Garrett Camp had trouble hailing a taxi so they came up with the idea to get a ride by something available on the smart-phone (Uber, 2016). From such a simple idea, they turned it into an amazingly successful start-up through a remarkable entrepreneurial journey fulfilled by great efforts and unique ideas. However, their entrepreneurial journey has never been easy and smooth. Instead, Uber has all the ups and downs and at some points has been surrounded by endless list of bans and lawsuits against it. This paper aims to provide insights into this inspirational journey through critical aspects making Uber a huge success and what lessons two founders Travis Kalanick and Garrett Camp could give to future entrepreneurs throughout their story. II. MAIN DISCUSSION 1. Timeline of Uber: The Uber story started from a wet night in Paris in 2008, when Camp who just sold his StumbleUpon to Ebay had a chance to hang around with Travis Kalanis and shared his want to tackle taxi problem in San Fransico. As a progress, they introduced a prototype called
There exists a multitude of individuals who desire the title of ‘entrepreneur’. Thankfully, there exists such a system which makes this title easier to attain - the free enterprise system. The free enterprise system provides individuals the ability to make their own economic decisions, without limitations from the government. With this in mind, free enterprise has been necessary for Elon Musk to help found the electric automobile company, Tesla, Inc. With the free enterprise system, Elon Musk has made an impact on the business world with the ability of being able to lower risk for consumers, as well as create advanced products for consumers.
Uber Technologies, Inc. was founded in 2009 by Travis Kalanik and Garrett Camp as a way to solve their own transportation problems in the traffic congested city of San Francisco where it is still based and headquartered. Uber Technologies offers an on demand car service application for smartphone users that links drivers with people needing a ride. According to Jim Makos of Pestle Analysis “It brilliantly connects the transportation industry with technology via its ride-sharing app.” With the click of a button on the application you can summons a vehicle of your choice see your rate, pay
A sharing economy company should concentrate on branding, networking and experience to ensure its success (Olson). Branding is key because sharing economy companies want consumers to have confidence in their brand. The sharing economy is at an advantage, being relatively new with a market that is interconnected through online commerce and social media. Outside of spreading the work, a sense of community is built within the network. Finally, a sharing economy company has to concentrate on customer experience. Customers are looking for ease of use and product value. When these desires are met, consumers will return to use the service as well as recommend it to others. One very successful example of a company with the sharing economy employing these factors is Airbnb, who in less than a decade has built a major competitor to the centuries old hotel industry.
This speech well explained the advantages of using Uber. It used a lot of evidence to explain why use Uber can reduce CO2, save more space, save people more time. Those facts will attract more people’s attention, so more people will try to take Uber. However, it spend too much time on the history of Jitney, and the fact that Jitney eventually failed. Uber and Jitney are actually the same thing, and the failure of Jitney will make people start to wonder if Uber will fail too. However, the advantage of Uber is strong, and attractive. Overall, this is a good
So how did Uber get here? It all started when Anthony Levandowski and Travis Kalanick (CEO of Uber at that time) met on Ted Talk in 2012. In July oi 2015 Levandowski and
More than 1.3 billion live in extreme poverty and make less than $1.25 a day. This quandary affects poor people because they can’t make a living to sustain themselves. This occurs all over the world making many of close peers live in poverty. My solution to this deals in trillions of dollars but could have a high reward if it's victorious.
The article “Uber’s New Goal: Flying Cars in Less Than a Decade” by Jamie Condliffe, appears in the MIT Technology Review. Uber has announced it wants to build an on-demand urban aviation system. The article explains how Uber is not content with upending the taxi industry and developing self-driving cars. Even though the idea seems a little outrageous, it seems that Uber is completely serious. The company has also recently published a statement that declares urban air transportation will use three-dimensional airspace to alleviate transportation congestion on the ground. Another point to mention, Uber does not plan to build the cars. Instead, they hope to other companies to create them. To be fair, Uber realizes there are hurdles. In their
Wealthy people are one of the most important people in any countries. Wealthy people will help many of poor people around the world if they donate to charities or philanthropy. I think Uber reputation definitely tarnished by the recent bad press. However, it does not seem to stop the millenniums from continue using their services. I came across an article about a generation of “sharing and not caring”. It said “Millenniums came of age during the Great Recession, and it is slow, grinding aftermath. Their habits were shaped by a bottoming-out of the housing market and the disappearance of easy credit. The generation with the highest-ever burden of student loan debt also saw a sharp contraction in wages.” (Davis O., 2015) The technology allowed more possession to live online, therefore, millenniums tend to drive less, and some don’t even own a car This may be one of the factors why uber remains popular despite
I frequently use Uber and have discussed their ride sharing services in several other courses. I did find it surprising that the company or even car manufacturers are looking into the idea of driverless cars and rides. I still do not trust the entire concept of driverless vehicles and I believe Uber should work on other aspects of the service before even having discussions on this topic. I would mainly want to work with Uber to improve in app offerings for safety purposes. I have already seen Uber in the news due to the criminal actions of some of their drivers. Like most people on the board have stated, Uber definitely needs to do further investigations when it comes to background checks of their drivers. I believe Uber should integrate a
Elon Musk is widely known as one of the best entrepreneurs in our time. That is because of his success in various industries such as automotive, aerospace, solar energy, satellite, financial services, etc.
Stephen Gill is a young, motivated entrepreneur that started out with a laundry list of ideas that have now landed him on Inc Magazine’s annual ranking of the country’s fastest-growing private companies. Gill recalls that he has considered himself an entrepreneur all his life. With this mentality, Gill, 27, went on to become a graduate of Rowan University’s Rohrer College of Business with a bachelor’s degree in Entrepreneurship and Marketing. During his degree, he says that the overall major was helpful and, by the end, his professors encouraged him and his colleagues to work for an entrepreneur for at least 10 years before becoming one themselves. However, he had other plans and jumped right into the process. He started out by
Uber launched from San Francisco, their mission simply stated, “Uber is evolving the way the world moves” (Uber The Company, 2014). Founded in 2009, Uber encourages people to download an application on their mobile device and arrange for a ride in over two hundred and fifty cities and fifty countries worldwide (Griswold, 2014). Travis Kalanick, Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer, is leading Uber in their vision of “seamlessly connecting riders to drivers” by taking advantage of P2P (Peer-to-Peer) technology. Garrett Camp helped Kalanick fund Uber with $200k of seed money (Uber, 2014) and today, only five years later, the company is worth an astonishing forty billion (Griswold, 2014).
In October 2010, came the first legal problems of Uber, when it received a cease-and-desist order from the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency over the inappropriate name of the company. The part of the name in question was the word “cab” which was used illegally, to which Uber responded almost automatically by changing its name to it’s current name, “Uber”, and buying the domain www.uber.com. (Blystone, 2015) This was also the point when Uber received the first funding of $1.25 million from First Round Capital, Kalanick’s friend Chris Sacca and Napster cofounder Shawn Fanning. This started a string of backings into the company.
He sets lofty goals and sets out to achieve them with great speed”. It is a fact that Musk was considered as the inspiring and visionary entrepreneur having astronomical willingness and ambition for investing his own money on different problematic business ventures.
