Communication is an integral part for effective management and productivity at work places. Language being a constraint the article highlights how majority of employees in this sector are immigrant workers from different cultural backgrounds. A perpetual disadvantage according to research among immigrants is the belief of not being able to converse in English (Castro, Fujishiro, & Sweitze, 2006). It is critical to the hospitality industry to explore new aspects of communication to converse effectively with diverse workforce.
Language barriers often cause issues, employees lose self-confidence and induce a sense of fear and confusion. Communication culture has changed throughout the world with all the new technological advancements. These advancements in technology have made it easier to get a hold of people all over the world, but we still have to be effective communicators. We still have to get our message across clearly and take in account for other’s cultural differences. Businesses want everyone to get along and things to run smoothly. Therefore, businesses try to make sure every message is given and received clearly. If you do not respect other’s languages, it can cause problems like people not wanting to work with you or formation of cliques in the work place. Every business will tell you that they do not want these problems. Once these problems are present then the business has to fix them to ensure a positive work environment.

In business, successful communication is the key to success, and being able to relate to a customer is the best form of communication. This is why cross-cultural communication is so important as the business world continues to globalize itself. Unfortunately, “A lack of awareness about the culturally prescribed rules and norms of communication behaviors can cause public relations projects to fail, or worse, backfire.” (Zaharna, 2001, p.135).
Racism also exists between people from non-English speaking backgrounds and native speakers of English. Because of language barriers, non-native speakers of English have more difficulties of will employment and in general, they have lower income. Also, they have fewer opportunities for promotion despite their
At the same time this was happening, a handsome and wealthy young man, who went by the name H. H. Holmes, arrived in Chicago in 1886 searching for work as a doctor or pharmacist. He established his pharmacy, but later bought a small land across the street and built a construction that was perfect for his practice of disposing of the bodies he murdered. The first floor was for his pharmacy, along with retail shop fronts. The top two floors had apartments for rent with secret hallways and passages to the basement to make the disposal of bodies convenient. Holmes decided to turn his building into the World's Fair Hotel when he found out the Fair site was near him. The building underwent another construction project and he added a kiln in the basement
Communicators who succeed in a diverse workplace must educate themselves about different cultures and co-cultures. Treating people from different cultural backgrounds with respect is essential. Finally, being willing to acknowledge and discuss cultural differences can help communicators understand and appreciate one another. The impact of culture and listening is very important in everyday life. Think about how many times you have had problems understanding someone from a different culture or even a different sub-culture. The language barrier in organizations can be a hurdle to get over. There are those that speak many languages and there are those that can only read and write in English. Those that are more comfortable speaking in their native language may do so with others that speak the same language due to the ease of understanding. There can be employee concerns for everyone in the organization. There are those that do not speak the language that may feel as if the employees are speaking about them or speaking about something that they do not want others to know. There are organizations like the case of EEOC v. Mesa Sys., Inc., D. Utah, No. 11-1201 where the organization goes too far. Employee concerns such as harassment, mistreatment, and being singled out for speaking their national origin, language for a reason to fire them.
