Three Kings, released in 1999, is a film directed by David O. Russel, the Academy Award nominated director of Silver Linings Playbook, The Fighter, and American Hustle. Three Kings was well received; Peter Bradshaw of the Guardian described it as, “an unexpectedly entertaining film about the most boring event in modern history: the Gulf War.” The plot of the film is simple, U.S. soldiers in the wake of the peace being reached with the Iraqi army find a map to a bunker filled with stolen Kuwaiti gold and decide to steal it for themselves, along the way they become caught up in the plight of refugees created by the war. This tragedy redefined our perception and feelings. It created a further barrier between the citizens of the United States and the peoples of the Middle East. This led the United States into over a decade of war, much of which was fought in the same region that had been bombed a little over a decade earlier during the Kuwait War. David O Russel’s film makes the case that impersonal war fuels prejudice. Impersonal war robs soldiers of the personal experience our protagonists had, thereby being unable to see that the people of the region have similar goals and values. The series of oppositional insurgents who have risen up to combat U.S. presence have a very similar message to that of Captain Said. They have lost families, had their beliefs challenged, and feel that they are losing their culture to a soulless consumerism. This film feels more like a missed opportunity to be warned of the dangers of impersonal war. It will take many more enlightening films willing to universalize and highlight our shared characteristics to bring people a less superficial understanding of living in a war torn country. If a conflict that lasted seven months warranted one film humanizing the enemies of the United States, surely after the last fourteen years of war the average citizen in the United States would benefit from dozens more films with a similar
