Materials and Instrument Instrument The instrument for this study will contain ten guiding questions to help focus on research question: In what way does S/R protect against tobacco use. The researcher will construct the questions in line with the SLT’s proposed pathways of learning as discussed in Miller (2011). The first five questions will be based on SLT’s proposed pathways: observational learning, vicarious learning, social cognitive process, self-efficacy, and agency. These questions will be reviewed by my research Chair, and afterwards by experts in the field of TU. However, the questions will be to help concept saturation and coding rather than dictate/restrict the content, flow or order of interview. The first question will be a …show more content…
After data collection, database will be created to store, and retrieve the interview transcript (Carson, et al., 2001; NCU, n.d, IRB). Also, a locked safe will be prepared to store the hardware materials used in the study (Carson, et al., 2001; NCU, n.d, IRB). Finally, there will be the interview protocol, the summary of the process of interview (Carson, et al., 2001; NCU, n.d, IRB). Study Procedure Before the commencement of this study, the researcher will seek the approval of Northcentral University’s Institutional Review Board to conduct the study. After the approval, sampling process will begin. Quota non-probability purposive sampling technique (Trochim et al., 2016) will be used for this study. The purposive sampling is more appropriate for the qualitative case study than random sampling (Carson et al., 2001). Researcher will recruit participants who have experienced the social phenomenon she will investigate, the negative influence of S/R on tobacco. Personalization will be employed in recruiting participants. Fan and Yan (2010) suggested personalization during research procedure could double the rate of response. Puckett et al. (2015) used mail, telephone and web based methods for their survey on tobacco smoking, and recorded less than 50% response rate. I will contact the leadership of a protestant/evangelical church for permission to interview five of the members for the study. I will also personally contact some prospective participants whom
Smoking is the act of breathing in the smoke produced by burning tobacco either in cigarettes, cigars or pipes. Smoking was introduced to the European culture by explorers such as Christopher Columbus, the practice soon spread across the globe. Smoking (2017) describes the use of tobacco products in the early 20th century as medicinal. Health practitioners believed smoking would aid in elevating the disposition, concentration and productivity of their patients. However, by the early 21st century the converse to this theory had been proven. Smoking had been identified as one of the leading causes of mortality and disease globally. Smoking is still widespread today, although there are many religious, social and medical discussions against it.
One of my first memories in the United States was taking a Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E) class. I was in sixth grade and a top student, as talking about drugs and alcohol and the way they affect us was fascinating to me. This is why, the following year, I volunteered to become a peer educator in Teens Against Tobacco Use (T.A.T.U). For a couple of years, I gave presentations to young students which included facts, demonstrations, and games, to spread the knowledge that tobacco is harmful and that staying away from smoking prolongs life expectancy and increases the quality of life. It should come as no surprise, then, that I consider myself a big proponent of staying tobacco-free and encouraging others to quit smoking as a great way to promote health. I remember watching my mom and sister as they took part in their nightly ritual of smoking a few cigarettes to unwind. “Did you know that a main component of cigarettes is used as rocket fuel?” I would ask them, as I opened the window and they stared back at me blankly. “We know, we know” was the answer every time. I knew that convincing them to quit was no easy task, but I was committed. Day after day, I proudly stated a new fact about the evils of smoking. Finally one day, they quit. At first, they attributed it to the cost. Since we had just immigrated to the United States, the cost of cigarettes was simply not something they could afford. I didn’t believe it. I proudly
how the questions are answered. Your goal in choosing an interviewee is to simulate the interaction
According to the lecture on Scenario Development, what are the two basic methods of obtaining an informational interview?
Psychology is defined as the study of the human mind and mental status in order to predict and also explain aspects of human behaviour. In regards to the behaviour concerning addiction, tobacco use is considered the most highly used (and abused) legal substance nationwide. It also has the highest leading risk factors causing considerable rates in morbidity and mortality and several types of cancer, respiratory disease and heart disease; relating to why promoting behavioural change (through aspects of psychology) is considered so imperative in today 's healthcare environment. In addition, the health promotion source that this essay will be examining is the National Tobacco Campaign, aimed at altering smoking behaviours, plus the associated advertisement strategies used, and lastly the psychological theories associated.
The first research article that I chose to discuss is “The natural history of cigarette smoking from adolescence to adulthood in a Midwestern community sample: Multiple trajectories and their psychosocial correlates.” This research extended from 1980-1983. It took place in a county school system in the Midwest. The group for study consisted of 6-12th graders and included those who graduated from the years 1980-1989. The total student’s who were questioned and assessed at least one time was 8,556. A follow up assessment was performed in 1987 at that time 73% of the participants were reevaluated; they were between the ages of 15 and 25. In 1993 another follow up was done; again 73% were reevaluated
The relatable health problem is tobacco use. Tobacco can be used in many ways, but most commonly it is smoked or chewed. I chose this health topic because it is a concerned of mine on how many young adults use tobacco. According to healthy people 2020, “10.9 percent of young adults aged 18 to 25 years who had not previously used tobacco products in their lifetime first used tobacco products in the past 12 months in 2008” This shows that young adults are trying and experimenting at a young age. I will be doing
Unstructured interviews are not made up of prepared questions. The interviewer will ask more open questions about board topics and then use follow-up questions to gain more answers in further detail. This method of interview is time-consuming however it enables the interviewee to answer questions in more detail and depth. It is possible that audio-recordings can be
In fact, the tobacco industry has suffered ever since antismoking advertising has begun (Johnston, p. 107). According to statistics, 4 in every 10 Americans who are in 12th grade have tried cigarettes, and 1 in 10 consider themselves current smokers. As well as, 1 in 5, 8th graders have tried cigarettes, and 1 in 16 consider themselves current smokers (Johnston, p. 107). Now that society is aware of the harms of tobacco, it is important to decrease such rates of smoking amongst youth. Not only are there commercials about the risks of cigarette smoking, but also there are commercials that promote living above the influence of all drugs, including alcohol and marijuana. Lastly, as research continues to improve, and new drugs arise it is important to keep youth educated on the risks of using such drugs. It is important to keep our youth safe from the dangers of
Now, more than ever, more and more people are beginning to look at tobacco use as a major public health concern. It is nineteen ninety nine, and the number of smokers is rising while the average age of smoking initiation decreases. There are those that believe using tobacco of any type should be illegal, or at least restricted. Others believe it is up to the person to choose whether to use tobacco products or not, however most of these people believe tobacco companies should warn their customers of their products harmful affects.
Interview: candidate shortlisting form (score sheet), CV, person specification and the list of questions there were set.
The negative health effects of tobacco use have been well established. Tobacco use has been shown to cause acute and chronic respiratory disease, heart disease, many types of cancer, and is the leading cause of preventable morbidity and mortality in the United States, causing an estimated 443,000 deaths per year (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services 2004). As the dangers of smoking have become better understood, reducing the number of people who smoke has become a major focus for those interested in public health. Efforts to restrict the advertisement and sale of tobacco, implement public smoking bans, and educate citizens through public service announcements have all had a sizeable effect on smoking rates in the U.S. In Fact, over
It is crucial that tobacco usage in the United States ends because tobacco not only negatively affects the user, but also the people indirectly exposed, and as a result, the economy. Tobacco appears to be very profitable as a consumable product to the nation because of its wide usage, but the costs needed to cover medical charges overshadow the profit. Tobacco usage also demands a high price of human lives. Both the farming and waste of tobacco products damage the environment. The ceasing of American tobacco use will positively affect the country by creating a safer environment, reducing tobacco related deaths and illnesses, and providing cleaner communities.
Young people may start to be curious about smoking at some point in time in their life. They might like the idea of doing something dangerous or something that makes them look like an adult. Young people do not know that smoking and tobacco use can cause cancer and heart disease. They do not look into the future to worry about the consequences. Tobacco use is the leading preventable cause of death in the United States (Persoskie, Donaldson, & King, 2016). In this cohort study, there was a research if there was an interest about or ever-utilization of tobacco items among the US middle and high school students changed from 2012 to 2014. The research data came from the 2012 and 2014 National Youth Tobacco Surveys of US students in grades 6 through 12 (Persoskie, Donaldson, & King, 2016). 2014 data of students who used cigarettes, cigars, smokeless tobacco, and e-cigarettes were classified as ever-users or never-users of each product. The never-users were questioned about their curiosity about each product if they had been definitely, probably, probably not, or definitely not been curious about using the products.
In this case study, smoking cessation was addressed. Per an article on the CDC website, tobacco use remains the largest preventable cause of death and disease in the
