The brain is such a complete organ in the body. The fact that as newborn we have about seventy percent of our neurons in the cortex in amazing. With all the feeling and sensory going on in the cortex it begins to make sense why young children show so many different emotions in such short periods of time as well as sensory “overload” or being overstimulated. Sleeping for newborns can be directly related to their age, genes or social environments. Approximately half of the sleep in newborns is considered REM sleep, which can be witnesses by the flickering, consequently this means that the brain is working. However, over time REM sleep changes and we begin to see patterns in the transitional sleep, where an infant can be partial asleep and

In 1997, anthropologist James Mckenna and his colleagues conducted a study in a sleep laboratory at the University of California's Irvine School of Medicine. The study was to observed thirty-five nursing mother- infant pair sleeping together as well as apart for three consecutive nights. The infants were between eleven to fifteen weeks old. Twenty of the infants had been co sleeping since birth and the other fifteen had been independent sleepers. To observe they used many tools such as polygraph to record mother and infants heart rate, breathing rhythms, body temperature, the nursing cycles and even monitored their brain waves all of this along with watching their test subjects simultaneously on an infrared video monitor. What they found was quite unique, the infant and mother were highly responsive to each other and their movements. The infant and mother changed position of sleeping to face each other. They wake more frequently to nurse, and about twice as much as an independent sleeper and nurse three times longer but still get more sleep co sleeping than independent sleepers,

New born babies can spend up to 50% of their day sleeping, doctors believe that it provides the brain with a work out that offers much stimulation to infants. This sleep time is crucial for a proper brain development. It also provides the body with much needed relaxation and recuperation. Research shows that having shorter sleep durations can be associated with lower cognitive performance, hyperactivity-impulsivity, and impaired neurological development.
Have you ever not gotten enough sleep, or cut your sleep short for a class? Show of hands? Alright, well today I will be speaking with you about a subject that is near and dear to all of our hearts. Today I will be talking about sleep, specifically about REM sleep. First off does anyone know what the initials REM even stand for? REM stands for rapid eye movement, and it is the stage of sleep in which most dreams occur. It gets its name from the way your eyes move back and forth in this stage. Though those movements are slower than how your eye would move when you are awake. During a typical night, you cycle between REM and non-REM sleep, but spend the majority of your time asleep in non-REM.
In an aim to further decrease the occurrence of SIDS, the American Academy of Pediatrics released a subsequent “Back to Sleep” campaign which focuses on more than the initial recommendations made in 1994. The recent campaign, released in 2011, focused on the promotion of safe infant sleep environments that diminish the risk of all sleep-related infant deaths.

This shows that all emotions are important for developmental growth; we need to experience different feelings to become better at controlling our emotions.

While in the younger age group, I observed many examples of emotions. EJ, a male born on 6/3/2015, gave me a great insight. He showed anger when Tula took his toy. He screamed and yelled until someone paid attention to him. I assessed this as normative because many toddlers at that age have a hard time understanding the concept of sharing. EJ showed happiness as he was running around the room laughing and giggling. I assessed this as normative because he expressed his emotions normally as someone would when they are happy. He also showed affection when the teacher walked into the room by
