Upon serving as solicitor general, Cruz was essentially unheard-of at almost every level of government: local, state, or federal. Within a short amount of time, he emerged as a prominent political figure due to the Tea Party wave in 2010 (Parker and Haberman). On July 31, 2012, Cruz defeated Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst in the run-off election for the Republican Senate nomination with a vote of 57% to 43%. Four months later, he was elected Texas senator after defeating Democrat Paul Sadler 56% to 41% (“Ted Cruz Fast Facts”).
