Critical Thinking: How Perspective Can Resolve Conflict People are more likely to make rational decisions when they are not blinded by emotion. This intangible decision making tool is called critical thinking. It is one’s ability to recognize a conflict or opportunity, and evaluate all the possible circumstances before proceeding. That is how individuals establish their perspective of the world and the people living in it. In the absence of critical thinking, one may impose a single-minded approach to any situation, which, at times, can result in conflict.

If I am to develop my personal critical thinking ability, I must first make a conscious choice to understand the basic concept of a premise and then make critical reflection of this basic concept by expanding my thinking approach. To achieve this, I must ask radical questions that will enhance the scope of analysis and judgment. I must move from the region of subconscious thinking to one of conscious thinking because in so doing, I become aware that I am actually thinking. Freshman 101 is a class adapted from the parrot program (Fay & Medway, 2006, p. 226). The parrot program was designed for college students at Cornell University. Freshman 101 is the first of its kind in the state of South Carolina and the first to extend Parrot’s college program to high school freshmen (p. 226). Each two-hour intervention class contained 25 to 30 freshmen students. The objectives of the class were to have participants understand the definition of acquaintance rape and the frequency that it takes place along with South Carolina’s laws regarding rape (p. 226). Being poor means you barely have enough money for the luxuries in life; you can only afford the absolute necessities in life. Being middle class means you can afford to splurge here and there on luxuries. Being wealthier means you live a life of opulence, and you are not concerned with money in the slightest. I do not live an extravagant live nor do I live a life devoid of luxuries. Most of my significant events in my life do not have money involved in them. Whenever I have money I carelessly splurge it on things I will never come to use or I treat myself to candy with it. Sophomore year had ended, and my summer had just begun. After a long wait to gain permission to go on a backpacking trip. My father gave me the approval. I took my love for the outdoors and began to explore it even more.

If someone ask me what is my favorite memories in high school for now. I’ll says that is my sophomore year. Because sophomore year is the year that changed my mind and my life, the year that I meet my awesome friend and everyone look at me a different way and here is what happened to my sophomore year.

I can fairly say that sophomore year of high school has changed who I am completely. In sophomore year I decided to take on miscellaneous experiences to gain valuable work ethic that will help me to persist in college. These include joining a sport, and being accepted into a three year paid internship after going through an interview.Being the daughter of parents with a restricted income has limited my plans of funding my college education. My father is retired and my mother is a housewife which minimizes our financial abilities, however, this doesn’t prevent me from my pursuit of a college education. Gathering a sufficient amount to cover for my tuition and fees has been on my mind since sophomore year of high school, so I started to save up.

In 1990, the American Philosophical Association defined critical thinking as “purposeful, self-regulatory process that results in reasoned judgment”. Critical thinking can be defined in a number of similar phrases that all seem to focus on the importance of conscious analysis. Our text starts off with the working phases of critical thinking as analyzing thinking, evaluating thinking, and improving thinking. The process of critical thought is cyclical and not linear. Being a “fair-minded critical thinker” is not a permanent attribute, and it must be consistently worked at as applying intellectual standards and elements of reasoning instead of emotion can be difficult. Overall, to be a strong critical thinker you must work toward strong intellectual traits such humility, courage, and integrity to better represent issues and or arguments.

Sophomore year is going to get tougher as you go on, but there will be many room to have fun, like the assemblies. Dont give in to video games, like last year. I will not play League of Legends or any other games until I finish my homework and studies. My days of being a procrastinator master is over. Remember back when you stayed up till 3:00 studying or doing a project at the last minute. Doing everything the day they are assigned makes your life more stress free. I wouldn’t be tired and have a mood swing while doing my homework, and then sleep for a few hours, and waking up feeling like poo.

Sophomore year in general has been treacherous . Now it's become harder trying to manage work while studying for finals, Eoc and keeping up with work. Nowadays, I find myself wishing to be back in elementary school. A memory that has been engraved to the deepest part of my brain is one of my teachers telling me of the importance of flushing and cleaning up after the mess that I create. I can’t believe that I once thought that elementary school was difficult. Let’s ignore the fact that my English wasn’t that good in elementary school, now that I’m actually reflecting on the time that I spent in elementary school, I can truly see how simple everything was. For example, I had to write my weekly vocabulary words thrice. But, this is the real world. We aren’t given the chance to go back in time just because we wish to relive certain periods of our lives.

That makes it hard to breathe. That summer, the instructors and the upperclassmen put the cadets through physical tests that test their problem solving and leadership skills. His first ride in a military jet was during his freshman year. He flew in a Lockheed T-33 (109-115). The summer before his sophomore year, he went through survival training. It was called SERE training, which stood for “survival, evasion, resistance, and escape.” It was designed to teach them skills if they were captured, how to not be captured, and just basic survival skills. The process of critical thinking requires you to ask more questions of both others and of yourself before a decision or determination is made. In order to successfully evaluate data in a critical manner, you must have a system in place to assess information as it is presented. In any situation whether you are having a conversation, observing others, or material you have read, you must be ready to probe deeper and ask the right question at the right time.

There are said to be six stages of critical thinking, the unreflective, challenged, beginning, practicing, advanced, and accomplished thinker. The unreflective thinker is unable to asses their thinking skills while in the second stage of challenged thinkers, they are becoming aware and figuring out problems. The beginning thinker is similar to concrete thinking, which contains no depth, it regards to the facts and thinking in the periphery. At the fourth stage, the practicing thinker is developing the knowledge for systematic practice, while the advanced thinker now has good habits and can actively analyze information. Lastly, the accomplished thinker can access their intuitiveness and take a position on things in everyday life(Edler, Paul).
