Veterans Day Never Forget Their Duty Analysis

An American can be defined by a variety of things. A natural born citizen is just as American as an immigrant searching for a new life, just like in “America and I” by Aniza Yezierska. An American can be a rich businessman or it could be a dedicated soldier like in “Veteran’s Day: Never Forget Their Duty” by John McCain. An individual’s definition of being an American is shaped by their life experiences. A person’s view on being an American is different because of experiences, such as being a veteran, being an immigrant, or living in poverty, all of which affect one’s perspective.

“It’s not the glittering weapons that fight the fight, but rather the hero's heart” -unknown. Veterans may not be the first thing that pops in your mind when you think of superheroes, but in fact, veterans are more heroes than you may think. They fight for our country and save us from being overruled by other countries. Veterans fought when no one else wanted to; they trained all day every, day and they also were misstreated.

Gioconda R Saraneiro became the first appointed female captain in the U.S. Naval Medical Corps. Initially appointed a Lieutentant junior grade in the WAVES during World War II in 1943, she left the Navy to teach and start a medical practice. She returned to the Navy in 1949 and retired in 1966. Captain Saraneiro passed in 1983.

As a nation, we need to be thankful for our veterans. The men and women who join the military undergo nine weeks, or more, of boot camp. That right there is said to be the most laborious nine weeks of anyone’s life. Drill sergeants break them down both emotionally and physically, so they can improve upon them and make them stronger. Those are the people we should be thanking, the ones who fight to preserve our country’s freedom, equality, and the pursuit of happiness. Those are the fundamentals of our Constitution that those people fight to protect. However, after their service, it doesn’t seem like people know that.

November 11th is the day that we honor those who served and died in war for our country. The 11th of November 1918, marked the cessation of the most destructive, sanguinary, and far reaching war in human annals and the resumption by the people of the United States of peaceful relations with other nations, which we hope may never again be severed (VA.gov). We call it Veterans Day, but the original name was Armistice Day. June 1954, the United States Congress voted to change the name to Veterans Day because the United States had been in two wars since Armistice Day.

     Another vague subject of patriotism brought up in times of war is the iconography. In America the most commonly known icon of patriotism is the American flag. Unfortunately, what the flag represents is ambiguous and unclear to most people. Kingsolver pleads, “We desperately need a new iconography of patriotism” (Pg. 2). When examining why she says this we should look at what other people believe the flag represents. Some, traditionally conservative or republican, feel the flag is a physical representation of supporting their country. An abundance of flags are often seen during times of war or tragedy. Flags signify peoples care, concern, or support for what is going on. The absence of an American flag can often result in persecution. Veterans are people that have battled in a war for their nation. Some tragically, aren't even alive any longer. In the the wars, veterans have stuck together as a group against the people who battled our nation. We are a united countery, and veterans have made it conceivable by securing us. Veterans Day is a day to respect every one of those people who have died for our nation. Veterans have given their time, mettle, boldness, lives, and quality for us and this nation. If not for the veterans, we likely wouldn't be here todayt. That is the way huge of an effect veterans have on this awesome nation. Veterans Day is a day to celebrate. You really can not fully celebrate Veterans Day until you know the history behind Veterans Day, and the meaning of why we celebrate or Veterans on November 11.

Another Veteran’s Day has come and gone, but the number of veteran students on college campuses across the nation is growing and expected to increase by 20 percent within the next few years according to data from the Veterans Affairs campus tool kit.

As you know Veterans Day is on November 11. There are many reasons why we should honor veterans every year. This essay is going to be three reasons why I think we should honor them. They are willing to give up their lives for their country, willing to give up some of their freedom to protect the lives of people, and have to deal with the problems that come after they have served.

Veterans Day was started on November 11, 1918. Before it was called veterans day it was called Armistice Day to represent the men who fought in WWI. After the United States went through WWII and the Korean War. The 83rd U.S. Congress amended the Act of 1938 by taking the word Armistice out and put the new word Veterans in place of it to represent every American that served in any war the U.S. has been in. Veterans Day was then moved to be celebrated on the fourth Monday of October, but most States didn’t agree with that decision made, so they tried it and it brought so much confusion when in 1971 it was celebrated on Oct. 25, until President Gerald R. Veteran's Day is a special time. I have family or had family in the service. My Grandpa Harry Iunghuhn was in the Navy. My Grandpa Sir Schweier served in WW1. Now my cousin Emily Fay. She is in the Navy. Veteran's Day to means to honer men and women who have served for our country.

Veterans Day in America should be a day that is more celebrated. Many people don’t give a second thought to those who have literally put their lives on the line to keep this country free. I feel like in order to honor those who have served and those who were lost in battle we need to keep our country educated. War is not happy, it’s not pretty; it’s painful and gruesome and we should educated our children and current generations about the risks our troops have taken for us and for the freedom of others.
