Studies have proven that 97% of gamers tend to repeat the actions of the game. Teens that play video games are usually afraid of the world around them. The effect of violent video games doesn’t affect the brains right away. Children that watched many hours of violent television tend to show higher levels of aggressive behavior. Think about this if video games express the violent shooting and the violent actions in them, and in the game teens get away as they grow up playing all these violent games they actually think that after a while they will be able to get away with it. Randomized experiments were used in several studies to examine the short-term effect of violent video games (Anderson and Berkowitz et al. 90). In these studies, children were randomly assigned to play violent or nonviolent video games and then were observed when given an opportunity to be aggressive. The result was that children who played violent video games usually behaved aggressively.

Concerns regarding whether television and video game brutality has a negative effect on the public by promoting cruelty, dates back to the 1950’s and is still prevalent today. Studies and research conducted on the issue are unable to prove that the two variables have any correlation to each other. In fact, statistics demonstrate how the amount of violent crimes has decreased significantly throughout time, despite the growing video game popularity. Lastly, in society, people look for anything to transfer the blame, especially in regards to a situation that may threaten an individual’s community. As a matter of fact, by reviewing the extensive research the conclusion was drawn stating, exposure has no effect on barbarity. Therefore, television and video game ferocity does not have a negative effect on the population.
On April 20, 1999, two senior students plotted a school shooting, sadly managing to kill 12 students and one teacher, along with several other major injuries. Knowing they would soon be caught, the two perpetrators committed suicide. This was the Columbine High School massacre. Although their motives were unclear, investigators concluded that the shooters conspired to “compete” against other mass shootings in the ‘90s, stating that they were homicidal psychopaths. The shooting was known as the deadliest school shooting ever recorded (History). This incident sparked issues over gun control, goth subcultures, use of pharmaceutical antidepressants, and violence in video games and television. The two students were said to play and watch countless hours of violent video games and television and that was known to be a major cause for this catastrophic event. Therefore, the issue over violent video games and television should be regulated or restricted to children and especially to teenagers.
