Whilst it is suggested the Fairytale tradition can be traced back to the Renaissance period (Zipes, 2001), famous characters and their tales like, Snow White, Little Red Riding Hood and Cinderalla can be traced back to antiquity (Anderson, 2000).
Fairy tales as we know them today began between the years of 1812 and 1857 with two young German librarians, Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm. They published a collection of tales that became one of the most influential works of folklore in Germany, then ultimately, the world. These tales are based on the difficulties faced by families at the time. The tales were taken from German oral tradition, a successful attempt to preserve their cultural heritage (Gillis, 2000). These tales were made for adults, never intended to meet the ears of children. Many of these tales have been copied and ‘fine-tuned’ by Disney to make them more “child-friendly”(Tatar 2003) . Disney is described as a force that impacts cultures which influences more than just the film industry. Davis (2006), both a communications professor and Disney film researcher, argues Disney has,
“taken on the role of America’s predominant storyteller for most of the twentieth century, it became an inseparable aspect of American popular culture, as well as an integral part of the American social fabric” (Davis 2006,

Walt Disney was a very influential man to the entertainment industry. He made animation a whole new type of entertainment. Although Walt went through many struggles and problems, he pushed on and eventually saw results for all his hard work. Many hardships got in Disney’s way such as unsupportive parents and even bankruptcy; Walt pushed on through, always creating, working hard, and persevering to accomplish his dream.
Fairy tales are magical stories about fantasized beings and happy endings. They are told orally and are also found in a literal form. Disney was one of the milestones in the American history of fairy tale stories. With out Walt Disney there would not be more than 70 years of “classy cartoons”. Not only Americans are influenced by these fairy tales, we can conclude that over 50% of the world has an idea of this “American dream” of life that is portrayed.
Cinco de Mayo is a popular holiday recognized by many. Cinco de Mayo, translates to the fifth of May, and is a holiday celebrated by people mainly in Mexico and the United States. Before the Brothers Grimm transcribed what is known today as one of the most recognized fairytales ever recorded, it was being passed down orally from generation to generation at every corner of the globe. Various versions of Cinderella’s myth can be found in almost every culture in the world, all very distinct with their own specific qualities, reflecting each society’s predominant interpretations of religious themes. For instance, Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm’s works were known to promote their Prussian culture and language, such as “Aschenputtel”, their German version of Cinderella. Most of their adjustments were heavily influenced by the criticism of their fellow countrymen, their audience, and their Christian beliefs.

How many little girls dream of being Snow White? How much money did Disney’s Tangled make? What little girl hasn’t dressed up as Cinderella or dreamed of meeting her very own prince charming? These popular fairy tales were created by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm. Their primary motivation when starting their collection of fairy tales was to preserve culture rather than entertain, but entertain is what they did. These fairy tales, and versions of them, have remained popular for a very long time, outlasting most other works of literature. The Brothers Grimm adapted these well-known stories from around Europe to reflect their own personal views, Germanize them and remove some of the more disturbing details of the original stories. In the same way, these fairy tales have been altered again and again to be acceptable to society. Fairy tales similar in theme can be found across the world. The Brothers Grimm versions are the most familiar because their emphasis on German culture and Christian morals is very similar to American culture and values. The adaptability and skillful incorporation of morals and issues considered socially unacceptable in an entertaining story, has allowed the Brother’s fairy tales to last throughout the ages.
Try to imagine a world without Disney movies and characters, Disney World, and all of the other great things that Walt Disney has brought to life. Our lives would be completely different, because for many people, Disney played an important role in their childhood and even throughout the course of their lives. Even today, forty years after his passing, we still are reminded of all the great things Walt Elias Disney accomplished. Not only was he successful in creating timeless and captivating stories and characters that turned into films and parks, but he also made significant contributions to U.S. history and culture. During difficult times, he provided happiness for a number of Americans and positively changed the way that we view
Our culture is entranced by literary fairy tales originating from as early as the 1600`s. Fairy tales were written not only as a form of entertainment but also to represent the reality of the time by incorporating both enjoyable characters and themes and raw human nature. While the stories of the time reflected oppressive ideal gender roles, the fairy tales remained popular as they captured the attention of young children. To capitalize on this, Walt Disney began adapting the fairy tales into animated movies for children of all age to enjoy. One such film is Cinderella, adapted from Charles Perrault, which was released in 1950.
Most of you have probably heard of the Grimm brothers, and if you haven’t heard of them, you have most likely seen their work. Disney movies like Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and Cinderella are child friendly versions of the Grimm brothers’ original fairy-tales. Ironically, the brothers had no intention on becoming story-tellers, when first starting their journey. The book The Annotated Brothers Grimm stated, that when trying to study other languages they found it easiest and best to share stories that had been passed down generation to generation. The brothers kept all the stories they had heard and published a book in 1812 called Kinder und Hausmarchen, which translates to “Tales of Children and thee Home”. Believe it or not, fairy tales were not always about finding true love, and “having a
I just glanced through my phone, swiping quickly to going through the photos of everyone’s snapchat story. But one word caught my eye: fire; it caught my eye but I did not really think about it afterwards. Several hours later however, I was with my friends working on our english essay when all of a sudden, I look up to see what looked like an enormous blanket of brown dust staining the clear blue sky. There was a distinct line between the perfectly blue sky and the disgusting smoke from the fire and this transformation that occurred so out of the blue causing both shock and awe from me and my friends. Transformations play a role in stories meant to scare us by creating an atmosphere of discomfort and uncertainty because the characters are unable to control the situation around them. Through the short stories of “The Fall of the House of Usher”, “House Taken Over”, and “Where is Here”, the authors of those stories all elicit an atmosphere of fear through the joint transformations of setting, mood, and characters. “The Fall of the House of Usher” change occurs at the climax of the story where Roderick Usher falls into insanity. “House Taken Over’ changes when the mysterious intruders fully overtake the house forcing the siblings to leave. In “Where is Here” the stranger leaves the home which causes the house to fade in color, draining it of life.
I chose to research fairytales, specifically fairytales by the Grimm brothers. Fairytales are short stories that tend to consist of fantasy people, places, and objects. Many of these consist of fairies or magical creatures. Most fairy tales start off with “Once upon a time”, or “In a faraway land”. Many times in fairytales objects are enchanted and can talk or move. The most common characters in a fairy tale are prince and princess. A lot of fairy tales are retold throughout generations. As a child I was told fairy tales as bedtime stories. I grew to love Disney movies which are popular for remaking fairytales such as Sleeping Beauty and Snow White. To this day I still enjoy remade fairy tales such as “Rapunzel” which was
Fairy tales are timeless entities that will always be relevant in people’s lives. Fairy tales and stories offer entertainment, advice, and moral examples. The creation of fairy tales is important in the development of social norms. Children everywhere would read fairy tales and learn from them. As a result, these fairy tales are translated into multiple languages and allows people with different backgrounds to understand and relate to the story. People take these stories and adapt them to life around them. Within these adaptations of the same story, it is normal to observe slight differences that contribute as evidence in identifying the culture or societies in which these stories come from. Whether it is the slang of the dialogue or the change of location, modern producers and writers are known to take these classic stories and adding a significant twist to adjust to their cultural agenda. The movie, The Princess and the Frog, is a modern example of writers and directors creating a modern twist to the popular story of the Brother Grimm’s The Frog King. The Princess and the Frog and The Frog King both encode the mores, values, and beliefs of the cultures of the societies from which they come because, even though they both have similar plot ideas, the differences of the location and the differences of the overall specific plotlines attribute to understanding how their own specific cultures influence the adaptation and the actual story.
Most modern fairytales are expected to have happy endings and be appropriate for children, nonetheless, in past centuries most were gruesome. Consequently, fairytales have been modified throughout time. The stories “Beauty and the Beast” by Jeanne-Marie LePrince de Beaumont and “The Summer and Winter Garden” by Jacob and Wilherm Grimm share similarities and differences. The two stories are distinct because of the peculiar year they have been written in. LePrince de Beaumont’s story is written in London of 1783 and Grimm’s in Germany of 1812. At the time, wealthy people in London, were educated and had nannies who would read to their children; whereas, in Germany, the Grimm brothers created their own interpretation into a short story.
