During Andrew Jackson presidency, he acted more like a king. When he was president Jackson had many reasons that would show he was more of a king than a president. Some reasons would be a War on Bank of US, American System, and Indian Removal Act. All these events will show how he was king just by the way he thought of the events. First, War on Bank of US was something that showed he was more of a king than a president. Jackson thought the War on Bank of US was unconstitutional and a threat to liberty (Jackson’s Economic Issues). Reasons to support this is he thought that it was unconstitutional because he believed that it hurt the people who had to pay for the bank. It put people and the government in danger of possibly losing the money that they had. The people that the US Bank hurt was mostly farmers, which when your king or live in that type of era you rely mostly on farmers for crops and other things. To conclude, this was just one of the many reason why he acted more like a kind when he was president. …show more content…
Jackson was for the American System when he was a senator but he was against it during his presidency, he also saw that it advanced a special privileged few and that made him hate it (Jackson’s Economic Issues). He hated the American System because it wasn’t fair to have only advanced a special privileged few and leave the rest behind. It started to flow into a small self confident minority (Jacksonian Democracy Article Notes). This means that it was becoming a government that they were beginning to trust. In brief, this was another reason how this lead to him acting like a
Jackson escalated this so-called "Bank War" in 1833 when he removed federal government funds that were on deposit with the BUS and distributed them to loyal state banks. That’s not right of him to do that, in my opinion it doesn’t matter if he’s president or not. It posed as a threat to him and he feared for his own power. Jackson did not even like paper money anyways. He preferred to use coins instead, so putting him on money he wouldn’t even approve of us using is idiotic.
Jackson was a genius and totally reinvented how candidates wanted to be portrayed in the eye of the people. Jackson appealed to everyone from the rich, poor, farmer, professional, industrial, to average Joe. This approach worked to his advantage he took no side when it came down to some heated political debates within the nation he was neither for or against any of them. He revolutionized the way presidential candidates were in all parties. Once he got in it was a different story he had ideas that were going to raise big question marks within the community. The Jacksonian idea was to achieve stability and control by winning to the Democratic party "the middling interest, and especially ... the substantial yeomanry of the country" by "prudent, judicious, well-considered reform." The attempts at political stability, at economic control, did not quite work. The new industrialism, the crowded cities, the long hours in the factories, the sudden economic crises leading to high prices and lost jobs, the lack of food and water, the freezing winters, the hot tenements in the summer, the epidemics of disease, the deaths of children-these led to sporadic reactions from the poor. Sometimes there were spontaneous, unorganized uprisings against the rich. Sometimes the anger was deflected into
Andrew Jackson acted more as King Andrew who incited mob rule rather than the man of the people which he claimed to be. Andrew Jackson disagreed with different government systems, moved his friends and allies into the cabinet, and closed the national bank which proved that Andrew Jackson knew how he wanted to change the course of America and took less interest in pubic opinion. Andrew Jackson acted as more of a king than a president.
Andrew Jackson was like no other president before him. The previous presidents had one thing in common, they were all part of the founding fathers or in John Quincy Adam’s case was the son of a founding father. However Jackson was a plantation owner from the west who had no connections with the government. He also had different views from other presidents that made his presidency unique. Two things that separated Andrew Jackson’s presidency from previous presidencies were he reached out to the common people and he was disapproving of the Bank of United States.
Andrew Jackson had a big impact on American politics. Some people think that he influenced politics in a benefiting way, while other people dislike his ideas. It was because of him that there was a so called “Jacksonian Era.” This era lasted from 1824 to 1860. During this time, Jackson was President of the United States. It was an era that “addressed the inequalities in American society.” The Jacksonian Era was a crucial period of time in American history when the role of the President and Federal Government changed. Things like the Bank War, Missouri Compromise, Gold Rush, Seneca Falls Convention, Indian Removal Policy, a change in voting requirements and the split of the Democratic Republicans changed the United States forever.
Although he thought that the people should have a say in government he didn 't fight for slaves, women, or Native Americans to have their opinions heard. In fact he signed the Indian Removal Act, which moved Cherokee tribe out of Georgia into an Indian reservation in the West. Actually the Supreme Court ruled this unlawful in the case of Worcester v. Georgia in 1832, but when Georgia ignored the ruling Jackson didn 't complain. Jackson had a chance to stop the trail of tears from happening and saving about four thousand Cherokee Indians. Jackson believe the people in charge of the bank of the US were crooked and the bank would needed to be crushed. So, when the bill for the charter for the Second Bank of the United States came up he immediately vetoed it. He then decided to deposit the federal fund of the United States in pet 23 pet banks. Nicholas Biddle the head of the back fought back as hard as he could but Jackson was determined and frankly he didn 't listen to anyone but the people. Jackson issued his own form of paper currency (banknotes) that were backed by Specie Circular, which was usually silver or gold coins. The extreme inflation of the economy started after Jackson dismantled the Second bank of the US. The inflation was caused by the banks issuing banknotes that were unbacked by the Specie Circular. This was a big part of starting the Panic of 1837, it wasn 't the only reason but one of the biggest. When building our country the founding
Jackson was willing to make the unpopular decision of vetoing the renewal for the national bank and withdraw all the money to get our nation out of debt. Doing this made him very unpopular but Jackson was willing to take the risk to get the nation out of debt. Also when President Jackson became president he brought all of his friends with him, and gave them jobs, even me, using the spoils system. Incase you didn’t know the spoils system is when a president gets elected and he gives all of his friends and associates positions in office. As one of our best presidents Andrew Jackson also paved the road for us to continue on with manifest destiny by moving the Native Americans into Oklahoma so we could move farther west. While this may seem cruel to some he was doing what was best for our people and what he felt was best for the Native American population. President Jackson caringly thought of how the Native Americans would feel about themselves if they were surrounded by civilized people with foreign traditions to them. He was moving them for their own good, seeing as they never wanted to assimilate to our culture. Also, he feared that they would see themselves the way that they are truly seen, as savages, and he did not want to have to force that
Jackson firmly believed in quality of economic opportunity, which he showed several times throughout his presidency. He believed the national bank helped the wealthy elite and that state banks would help the common man more. Also by
Even though Jackson was very successful during his presidency, there were some events in history that really showed his “weaknesses”. Jackson was classified as a lunatic. He was feared by many, especially his opponents. Due to his temper and poor decisions, Jackson did not mind to go to war for what he believed in or did not care to remove anyone against him. He was a real savage, and I feel the country at this time of period needed this type of mentality in the presidency. A negative event that took place during his term was the Trail of Tears, which was the forced removal of Native Americans from their homeland, resulting in the death of thousands of people. He also promoted slavery and he himself owned many and showed cruelty towards them. Andrew Jackson was stubborn and only cared about himself, but I do believe he
For one his agenda to completely reject the idea of a national bank helped to shape political democracy in many ways. In (Doc 4) Jackson sends a letter to Congress vetoing the Bank of the United States because Andrew believed that, “It is easy to conceive that great evils to our country...might flow from such a concentration of power in the hands of a few men irresponsible to the people.” From the jump Jackson knew that if a National Bank was to be built the “rich and powerful” wouldn’t work in the interest of the people. (Doc 3) you see a picture of Andrew Jackson drawn as King Andrew the First and as King Andrew is stepping on Internal Improvements and the U.S Bank. Another part of Jackson’s agenda which wasn’t really democratic was by enforcing the power of the president through rotation and the spoils system.
One piece of evidence is a quote from the passage, “The present bank of the United States… enjoys an exclusive privilege of banking… almost a monopoly of foreign and domestic change.”(Document 4) This quote is important to answering the question because with this quote, Jackson vetoed the bank making it more democratic and able to use for everyone no matter what money class they were in. Another piece of evidence from Document 4 is another quote which states, “It is to be regretted that the rich and powerful too often bend the acts of government to their selfish purposes.” This quote is important because it shows Jackson wants the common people to have more power, unlike the wealthy who have always had more freedom. Jackson is presented as more democratic in Document 4 by his belief that the bank does not accurately describe or represent the American
The first king, president of the United States was Andrew Jackson. President Jackson ran two terms was from 1829 to 1837. Jackson was the first president to grow up from a poor family, he was born on the border of North and South Carolina in 1767. He first volunteered in the Revolutionary War, when he was 13.Jackson was captured and badly wounded Jackson was let free thanks to a prisoner exchange and served. He returned home to his widow mother, but unfortunately his mother died shortly after.
Andrew Jackson's reign was arguably that which argued a dictatorship. His rise to power sat a precedent for how his leadership would be, ruthless and aggressive. He was a man who imposed his law with brute force and a menacing determination. These are extremely evident in the indian removal policy, his actions regarding the nullification crisis, and the bank war.
Jackson saw the power in his office and he used it to further the Union at every turn. His actions against the Indians was even brought about to preserve his response to the Nullification Crisis which threatened the Union. Jackson was a man that thought of the future, this is best seen in his thoughts towards Texas. A dangerous man would have flexed America's military power when attempting to purchase Texas from Mexico. Jackson did not, as he instead opted to purchase the land through a mediatory, one he thought was fit enough to negotiate for the Union.
When running Jackson founded the party called American Democracy. His party stood for an unintrusive government, and his personal mission was to give more power to the common man. He took power away from congress to do so. The national bank system was put in place by Alexander Hamilton during Washington’s presidency. When Jackson took office he chose to create pet banks. These were small privately owned banks that were not regulated by the government, which took power away from the government and put it into the hands of the common man. This gave them jobs and made it their responsibility to keep up with the money that was being put into them. The intentions that Jackson had for the middle and working class were good ones that he struggled to
