And by that i mean by being honest in our work,and not taking any kinds of short cuts.Because as students here at Wytheville Community College, we are expected to achieve above and beyond. Prior to completing the Academic Integrity Program, I thought academic integrity was as simple “not cheating.” I considered it a policy solely implemented to ensure that students learned the material. To me, cheating was mostly plagiarism, or trying to pass off someone else’s work as your own. It was not until I completed the program that I began to understand the long-term effects of cheating on the peers, the professor, and the institution. Now, I understand that cheating affects not just me, but also the other students in my courses and the university’s reputation. Academic ethics are the moral codes or the shared standards of an academic enterprise and the core of its success (Occidental College, 2016). Basically, academic ethics require each student, to be honest, responsible, fair, respectful, give credit where it is due, turn in their original work, and etc. (Michigan State University, n.d.). Academic integrity requires students to do their own work without unauthorized help from others, cheating, lying, plagiarizing, and stealing (Valdosta State University, 2016). Academic integrity is important because it shows that the student is trustworthy and honest enough to do his or her own work, whether someone is looking or not. “Learning how to express original ideas, cite sources, work independently, and report results accurately and honestly are skills that carry students beyond their academic careers” (Michigan State University, n.d., para. 2).

As a student at the University of Maryland University College, I understand that it is my duty to understand the plagiarism policy and pledge to abide by it. I have been educated on the definition of plagiarism and how to avoid plagiarism. I have been educated on the subject of academic integrity and what steps I must take to always retain academic integrity. I will always do my best to only submit accurate research data, complete all assignments in an honest way and do everything I can to avoid plagiarism. I will avoid plagiarism by always submitting work that is the product of my own ideas. I will also do my best to properly cite and acknowledge all of my sources using the correct citation style. It has been said that "academic integrity is the moral code or ethical policy of academia. This includes values such as avoidance of cheating or plagiarism; maintenance of academic standards; honesty and rigor in research and academic publishing." (Wikipedia). This basically means that anyone who holds high academic standards will restrict themselves from cheating or plagiarizing. I hold these academic standards to myself, and everyone should because any form of cheating is unacceptable. Academic integrity is essential in any scholar's life; it is especially essential in mine. I believe that all of my work should be my own thoughts and any work that comes from other sources should be credited. To me, plagiarism meant taking a source word for word, using it and not giving credit to the original author. As I made my way through secondary school plagiarism was something that we were continuously warned against and I figured that if I stayed away from my definition of plagiarism then all will be well and frankly, it has been well. Now I am pursuing a higher education I am again met with writing research papers and the act of plagiarism. Personal integrity reflects how we are and it shows the people around us about ourselves. To become and have a better personal integrity, we have to practice various ways, to improve and enhance our skills to go in the right direction. Academic integrity is one of the practice. Every student who goes to school is expected to follow the school rules and policies, and understand what school wants to educate the students to be honor and have integrity in themselves for their future.
