4. I-pop, K-pop, and Role Model There is an assumption that, “K-pop adopted the style of Western boy/girl bands, means I-pop adopted Western style as well.” (Andriana .Y.F., Darmawan .R., Haldani. A., 2013, p. 7). That is true because as a center of globalization and popular culture for long times, it is common if later Western style still becomes an inspiration even for K-pop groups which is labeled as the new center of globalization. However, K-pop groups show their own characteristic, which is different from the West, in terms of performance and the language they use for their songs, which have been explained in the previous parts in this research. Focusing on the way K-pop groups dress by considering Eastern values, as the pictures show, …show more content…
Big Bang’s competitor for that award was Britney Spears who is known as an international diva. Also, they won The Best Fan at 2012 MTV TRL Awards competed against One Direction. After that, G-Dragon collaborated with Sky Ferreira and an international rapper called Missy Elliot in 2013 for his album titled ‘Coup d’état’. The songs that they have collaborated were mostly sung in Korean language. Other international musicians such as Will I Am also started to collaborate with K-pop artist. Will I Am collaborated with 2ne1 (Korean girl band) in 2013 for a single titled ‘Take The World On’, and he became the producer for 2ne1 in USA. The way Big Bang won international award by defeating popular international artists, and also the way some musicians started to collaborate with K-pop artists reflect how K-pop music has been accepted internationally. All in all, the purpose of I-pop groups following some aspects from K-pop groups is actually to gain popularity and success because by doing so, they are following the standard of international music these
While the bubbly outfits with overflowing laces and floral patterns that highlight the soft and sensitive characteristics once dominated the female apparel market in Japan, nowadays, Japanese women prefer balancing out the femininity with some stylish mannish clothing. Figure 3, where the woman matched her black lace dress and high heels with an olive-green military jacket, perfectly exemplifies the chic “甘辛ミックスコーデ” (The sweet-and-sexy coordinates) adored by many Japanese female consumers. The concept of “甘辛ミックス” is so well received in Japan because it spices up the overall look with an exquisite aesthetic balance. Known for wanting to break away from the mainstream, young Japanese female quickly adopted MA-1 jacket and the “girly-military look” as a mean to expressive their individualism in contradiction to social norms. As a result, MA-1 jacket has slowly become a wardrobe staple for Japanese young women.
The purpose of this paper is to simply explore the world music aspects of the song “Jai-Ho” a piece that combines music styles from around the world containing Western and non-Western musical aspects. The reason I chose this song as my topic is because it is a popular song in America although it does contain many different cultural influences. Growing up I have been exposed to Rap, R&B, and Pop music, sometimes even a combination of all three. This music is what I prefer the most out of the vast majority of labels given to describe songs’ musical aspects. About seven years ago, I remember hearing the song “Jai-Ho” coming from the speakers of my television as my dad watched the movie “Slum Dog Millionaire” I remember the fast pace rhythm, the
Music is an expressive language of culture. According to Kasilag (as cited in Angeles & Barlaan, 1978), music embodies the society because it encompasses the culture and social conditions of a country, and it also expresses the ideas and emotions of its people. The various changes that a country undergo is accompanied by the development of its music, particularly, the lyrics. Furthermore, a country’s identity is significantly embedded in its popular culture (Robinson, Buck & Cuthbert, 1991), thus, rock music, being accepted and adapted by the majority of the nation, manifests so much of the Philippine identity.
Fashion has always been an international tool for self-expression by designers and creators all across the world. The way each society’s trends change is due to the individuality of its history and culture. In many cases, often due to societal differences, what seems to be unfamiliar to one culture, is deemed different, weird, or even abnormal. However, in the opposing side, what we lack to understand, it is their world and who they express themselves as. In modern day Japan, the Japanese society has been quickly adapting to the differences in self-expression and identity in comparison to American society have been able to adapt. This includes the extremity of fashion and how it has been evolving over centuries within the cities of Japan. Regardless of how eccentric each style and trend may be, it ultimately can go to these extremes because of a historical context of uniformity. These subculture of street fashion grow within subgroups through the acceptance versus rejection because they develop within groups.
Since the 1990s there has been a growing interest in South Korean culture in other parts of the world. The phenomenon is commonly referred to as the “Korean Wave” (Jin “Hallyu 2.0: The New Korean Wave in the Creative Industry”) and with online platforms such as YouTube and Twitter, the popularity has only grown with people all around the globe. The most current example of the popularity of Korean pop culture into mainstream Western culture music is shown through the song Gangnam Style by artist PSY who went viral and currently has an astounding 2,690,497,276 views on YouTube. For those already fans of Korean culture, the song was nothing new however it introduced Korean music to a larger amount of Western listeners due to the fact it played on Western radio shows along with PSY appearing on popular television talk shows like The Ellen DeGeneres Show television. An even bigger instance of South Korean pop culture being thrusted into mainstream Western conversation is evident through current U.S President Barack Obama’s mention of the Korean Wave at the Hankuk University of Foreign Studies in 2012. However the transferring of culture through popular media has brought to light historical discourses surrounding certain racialized sexualities. The two music videos being used to analyze the depiction of these discourses are Mommae by Jay Park, a Korean-American Korean hip hop artist and Ah Yeah by EXID, a girl group under Banana Culture Entertainment Company. This paper will
Finding out what to wear in the morning is a part of everyone’s morning routine, but when it comes to fashion trends what you wear appears to become more important. Reading magazines and watching celebrates on the red carpet are a few ways in which people find out what is popular to dress in something that is will make them fit in and be up to date with the fashion of the time. In the other hand there are people who do exactly the opposite, more specifically those within the Lolita subculture. The Lolita subculture is a Japanese fashion subculture known for its Victorian period clothing style corsets, petticoats, and lace. What makes this fashion style unique is its similarities with 19th century girl and doll dresses (Adèle Hardy Bernal, 2011, p. 20), but Lolitas were not dressing up in Victorian clothes without a reason. The origins of the Lolita subculture can be traced back to as far as the late 1980’s.
Japanese popular music and Japanese popular culture is heavily influenced by Western culture through similar characteristics such as instruments, rhythm, style, and language. When listening to J-pop songs, most people tend to think that they might have heard these songs before despite ever listening to those songs. This familiarity is due to the fact that J-pop songs derive from many aspects of the Western music style. The individuality could come from the arrangement of songs, voice of singers, differences in language, or some combination of the three. All J-pop songs have a common characteristic of individuality and familiarity signifying that they are similar to existing music, but these characteristics are also dissimilar in any ways. J-Pop is a genre that is both a unique yet familiar genre of music that many people of different cultures can enjoy.

From reading Philip Taggs article “Analysing Popular Music: Theory Method and Practice he made many important points about the theme tune to the TV series Kojak and Abba’s Fernando. He believed that there was a serious need for the study of popular music as it is an undeveloped area of study, while many people thought of the study of popular music as a laughing matter. He also believed this study was important especially for music teachers teaching children who are thought all about “serious music” as if it could never be any “fun” (Tagg, n.d.) and not about any of the music that they are surrounded by everyday on radios and television. Tagg (n.d.) argues that the analysis of popular music is difficult to analyse using traditional tools of musicology.

Kaleş starts with explaining what “popular” music is. She gives different definitions of popular music to make the reader fully understand the concept of it. Then she states that the popular music as a genre has its origins in 1950s in the world and she highlights the adventure of the pop music’s emergence. Later, Kaleş points out that the Turkish music industry first met the Turkish pop music in 1960s, before that Turkish Classical Music and Turkish Folk Music were the main types of music in Turkey. She emphasize that before the pop music, Turkish music also followed other music types and influenced by them by giving examples of Turkish music bands to keep up with the universal music taste.
An important concept to note is that having music does not equal to having a music industry. Chinese music has existed for thousands of years and represents a distinctive genre in world music today. However, for the “music industry” to form, there must be a clear and sizable economic chain that links producers of music products to consumers. Additionally, the existence of pop music is a prerequisite for the music industry to exist. Again, to clarify, pop music here does not refer to a specific style of music but rather music that is popular or widely consumed by a significant portion of the population. Another thing to note is, for the purpose of this essay, “Chinese music” shall not include those by Taiwanese or Hong Kong companies since they do not contribute to the Chinese national GDP.
For this assignment I decided to focus on music primarily Korean girl groups, specifically for me the group I don’t like the most is Black Pink. In my opinion they are all good individuals and characters, however the type of music that they create is very similar to other types of girl groups such as TWICE and 2NE1. The main aspects within the types of music that these girl groups create, stems from a heavy mixture of “aegyo” which is a cutesy concept that over displays femininity as band members attempt to portray affection in child-like voices, features, gestures, and expressions. This form of cutesy concept in my opinion is demeaning towards women, as I don’t think the main body of the group should revolve around this. Another aspect I

On YouTube if the reader searches “ Her By Block B” and “Heathens By Twenty One Pilots”, both have an enormous amount of views on YouTube (YouTube). Although Heathens was featured in a popular movie, Suicide Squad, which gave them leverage to their popularity. Block B did a fantastic job in popularity due to their inability of being featured in a movie. This Research paper will explore and explain the differences between the genres, including their styles and instrumental aspects of their songs.
Lately, it seems that South Korea is making a mark of its own in the world, besides the fact that South Korea has a booming tech industry. The fact is that South Korea is making a name for itself due to the successful music industry. Since the fact that K-pop has spread to many different countries many Koreans are calling this the “Korean Wave” (Choi 1).
