I really enjoyed reading your post, and your responses to the questions regarding proofreading. I agree with you that being familiar with a topic can distort the writer’s ability to clearly identify errors or sentence confusion. This in of itself is a good reason to let the paper cool. It also allows some time for the writer to clear their thoughts and disengage for a moment. Besides letting the paper cool, I believe it is also important to find an approach that works for the writer when it comes to proofreading and editing. The main purpose in the correct use of grammar, punctuation and spelling is ensuring the receiver of the information reads it accurately. Addition to this when given a task to do, your employer expects you to do it perfectly. When a document has inaccuracies, readers tend to distrust everything, including the statistics, opinions, and facts. In the video “The The Impotence of Proofreading” by Taylor Mali the purpose of the video was to give techniques to help students in the process of proofreading a paper. Also, it talked about the most common mistakes people make when proofreading a paper for example, just checking the grammar in the computer causes to do not catch all errors included in the paper. A better option to check all errors is to print the paper and make the corrections with a red pen which will be easier for the student to go back and make those changes in the computer.

In this study, 60 native English speaking students were tasked with proofreading papers written by other students. They were compensated with 10 cents for every error they found. However, they would also receive a $1 penalty of each day they were late. They were given three texts that were 10 pages each to proofread, which had total of 100 grammatical and spelling errors in them. The proofreaders were told that they could submit their work early, but at no extra compensation. All the texts had to be proofread at the end of a 3 week period. Some participants were required to submit on text every week, while others could submit all the texts at the end of the three weeks.

Precision involves proofreading, and supporting details when I am writing I see that it is critical that you use factual data or supporting details throughout your papers because your readers may be led astray. At the very end of my papers I find it crucial to proof read my entire piece of writing to ensure that there are no errors and that the assignment has been accomplished properly.

While progressing through Introduction to University Writing, there were several important pieces of information that served as reminders on how to write properly. Looking back on all of the information provided, the most important guidance I gained was proofreading my writing. No matter how many times I proofread my work, it seems there are more mistakes to be found.

This course as you stated has been very complicated to me as well at times. However, the course has offered many valuable tools for us to utilize in preparing for our research-based paper. The writing process consists of prewriting, rough draft, color coding, clocking sheet, and the final paper. Writing down anything that comes to mind when thinking of the topic, and formulating it into a paper that makes sense is prewriting and the rough draft, which is the first part of the process. Since it is just the rough draft it does not have to be perfect. Color coding is when printing out the rough draft happens and highlighting every other sentence and other things based on the rules for that paper. Making corrections to other people's papers is what the clocking sheet is. The clocking sheet and color coding has helped me identify the errors in my papers. I still have troubles with some concepts of writing, like sentence structure and comma usage.

Proofreading is a tool used to double check someone’s work for any errors, and ensure the message is being delivered in a clear and organized manner. Proofreading can be done by the writer or a different person. When you write a document it is always best to take the extra time to proofread your document, letter, email, or whatever you wrote. This insures you have written your message correctly, and that you have not made the message confusing. In general, people have a hard time writing exactly what they are trying to say and a miscommunication in a company can cause not only a loss of profit, but maybe cause people to get fired. Once I have completed my writing, I go over it and look for grammatical errors, and then I go back over and look for punctuation errors. After I complete that I get a student or teacher to go over it and see if they find any errors. If I have anyone send it back, I do my best to fix the errors so that I know I have the best grade I can possibly make. In following the five steps of effective business writing, proofreading is something that I really don’t do much of. I would say that the area I need work on is proofreading because I forget where commas need to be placed at times. My biggest flaw as a writer is dealing with procrastination. Procrastinating is something that I do in excess way too often just because I try to avoid having to write anything in general. Yet if I had to write a simple text message I have no problem in doing so. Impatience is another aspect that I deal with when I have to write let’s say a paper or a letter. My impatience kicks in when I’m writing because I don’t like to take my time in writing; I find writing to be a hassle at times and try to avoid it all together.
