Referring to” Remington: An Introduction to Pharmacy” book Pharmacy is “The art and science of preparing and dispensing medicine”. It has been continuously evolving throughout the history; but, the changes have been more rapid in the past decade. Following this further; new academic degrees are developing and more professional opportunities are offered to pharmacy students and practicing graduates. Following this further; more people of the new generation are heading towards pharmaceutical majors (Allen, 2013) ( Dameh, 2009) . It has been requested as an academic assessment by the course tutor.
From there, I began to explore more of what a career in pharmacy would mean and take the steps necessary to pursue my dream. As I reflect on the past and look forward, becoming a Doctor of Pharmacy is still the clear answer to achieving both my immediate and long-term goals. My immediate goal is to work towards additional education to be better equipped to utilize my undergraduate degree. In particular, I have a strong interest in applying my knowledge of biochemistry to the area of pharmacy in order to better understand how different medications work, how to help patients understand their medications, and how to solve problems to better care for patients. Ultimately, through achieving a Doctor of Pharmacy degree, I desire to develop a meaningful career that would allow for life-long learning and impacting lives.
Pharmacy is a prolific field of study that is taking a prime position in the world of academia. It is quite demanding and needs completeness and vigilance. Thus, by going through pre-pharmacy, it will help me reshape my educational and career aspirations by bringing into reality what pharmacy entails through prerequisite coursework. I will also be able to come to terms with what the profession has at the end of the tunnel and asses with it marches my career goals. The profession is loaded with numerous employment and personal advancement opportunities, and I am motivated to study pre-pharmacy since it will spark of my innovativeness and optimistic that my future days would be worth the trouble.
In today’s world, everyone takes part in different discourse communities such as involuntary or academic memberships (Johns, 501). A discourse community is a group of dedicated people who share the same ideas, goals, and forms of communication about the field they are interested in. A discourse community "has a broadly agreed set of common public goals” and “use communication to achieve these goals” (Swales, 471). As a freshman student in college, I am hopeful in attending pharmacy school in the near future. Like many students who plan on attending pharmacy school, we are in the same discourse community. We share same interests such as studying for courses that are required for completing our undergraduate program, achieving high grades in our classes and passing our PCAT in order to get into our desired pharmacy school. Another discourse community I wish to be a part of after completing my pre-pharmacy program is the field of Pharmacy. However, I do not know much about the field of pharmacy so I decided to interview my uncle, a current pharmacist, Hussein Alzaghir in order to gain more knowledge about the field of pharmacy and its discourse community.
I have spent my time as a student pharmacist learning about opportunities within clinical pharmacy and making certain that I was equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed. In my pursuit, I became an active member of pharmaceutical organizations, held multiple leadership positions, attended clinical conferences, established research projects, participated in community service events, and other initiatives. I excelled academically, which was manifested in not just a high academic standard but also in tutoring fellow classmates and arranging sessions with other pharmacy students to help them improve time management and study skills. I shadowed pharmacists and residents before my advanced pharmacy practice experiences commenced to discover which areas of clinical pharmacy I found intriguing. I have obtained valuable pharmacy practice experiences in five specialties thus far including inpatient internal medicine, long term acute care, geriatrics and telehealth, and primary care. Through these rotations, I built upon the knowledge I acquired from my didactic courses but also developed patient-centered approaches and strengthened my clinical skills. I enjoyed many aspects of my rotations, including contributing pharmacotherapy recommendations, providing patient education, attending rounds and interdisciplinary team meetings – all of which have solidified my desire
The forerunner of today's pharmacist, the apothecary procured, mixed, and evaluated medications. The role of the apothecary-pharmacist has undergone many changes over the centuries. Once associated with the supernatural and alchemy, the apothecary became a leading health care practitioner whose field of expertise was based on science and who often treated patients directly. Eventually, the traditional apothecary was replaced by pharmacists, as we know them from the local drug store. Today, the pharmacist is primarily a dispenser of drugs already formulated and manufactured by pharmaceutical
Our pharmacy policy and advocacy journey continued on to Anaheim, California, where the APhA-ASP Midyear Regional Meeting was held. The purpose of this gathering is to provide an opportunity for APhA-ASP Chapters across our region to share with one another various proposals on how we can advance the profession of pharmacy. This year, our Chapter suggested the following resolution:
As the first generation in my family to go to college I learned the importance of education. I graduated from Benedictine University with a Bachelors in Science and an Environment Certificate. I became intregted by pharmacy when I started to spent countless hours at a hospital watching my grandfather go in and out of surgeries and treatments for cancer. Seeing the different medication being handed to him inspired me to understand biological and chemical processes that happened. A Pharmacists, role is to aim to help patients treat illness by introducing new developed treatment of medicines with a range of patients. I began to take special interest in memorizing all my grandfather’s medications and how practical and clinical aspect pharmacy worked.
After earning his bachelor of science in animal physiology and neuroscience from the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), Ashkan Khabazian matriculated at the University of Michigan to pursue his doctor of pharmacy. He graduated from UCSD in 2003 and subsequently completed a general practice pharmacy residency at Scripps Mercy Hospital in San Diego, California. Over the course of his career, Ashkan Khabazian has held pharmacy appointments with multiple healthcare centers and medical organizations in the greater San Diego area. He has also instructed students at a number of teaching hospitals and institutions of higher learning.
Pharmaceuticals, although known under many different names, have been an important part of civilization since the Ancient times. They are extremely important in the everyday life of many Canadians who deal with illnesses, diseases, and pain. Chemistry is an integral part of medicines. Were it not for medicines and the pharmaceutical industry, the world would be a very different, very unhealthy place. Medicines are easily taken and forgotten today, but that was not always so.
Eastwood Pharmacy is a private pharmacy owned and run by Richard A. Brafford. It is located at 1605 East Plaza Drive in Tallahassee, FL. The hours of the store are 9 AM to 6 PM Monday through Friday, and the staff include two pharmacists and two pharmacy technicians along with a store manager. When I first received Eastwood Pharmacy as my site, I was very excited to see the inside workings of a private pharmacy. I did not have any prior experience in a retail pharmacy prior to walking into Eastwood Pharmacy on August 5th, but as soon as I walked out for the day, I felt more comfortable with the retail environment than I ever would have thought I would.
He was an honest and persistent winner of the professional aspects of pharmacy and criticized whatever Ebert believed was the augmented commercialism of pharmacy and the excesses in educational requests.4
For me, choosing to pursue a career in pharmacy was far from planned. I knew that I wanted to find a profession which I could find self fulfilling. So, one could say I knew as much about pharmacy and its history as an average person. I’ve always imagined that pharmacy and the entire profession as a whole was relatively modern. In other words, I never really took pharmacy as a profession with a history. I’ve always thought that pharmacy and medicine, as one, essentially made its largest strides with the technology boom of the 21st century. During my visit, I realized I was both right, but also, wrong in a sense.
Pharmaceutical Sciences is a topic that has interested me for a while now. What I can say about this topic is that it will help humanity grow as a whole and keep everyone moving forward. This is a topic where people really need to think about what goes behind the scenes of your average pharmacies. Once people start to think about it, they would start to realize that the science that happens is extremely crucial to mankind as we know it. Without this kind of science, where would humans be today? Would we have the ability to evolve the way we have? How far would humans make it to creating today’s future as we know it? The simple answer to all these questions is
This semester has been a tough one but I feel like I have learned a lot about pharmacy over these past few months. I have had a lot of courses so far and in each one, I have been able to make connections to the practice of pharmacy. In this essay, I will reflect on some of things I learned in my courses and how they relate to my future career as a pharmacist. I will also identify areas where certain topics intersect in different courses.
Today in the 21st century the roles of pharmacist have expanded tremendously. Before pharmacist had the role of solely dispensing drugs. Pharmacists were limited to only being regulatory or clinical pharmacist. Back then they were called medical purveyors who were much like today’s regulatory pharmacist and hospital pharmacist who are similar to hospital pharmacist. Now pharmacists carry many roles in healthcare. Pharmacist can play roles in public health, community, health systems, state, and federal government.
