Jean Valjean's initial character, found in Victor Hugo's turn of the century novel Les Miserables, is the result of a poor and broken society; he saw no other option but to steal bread to support his family. He went to prison as a kind, thoughtful, and devoted man, but left full of hopelessness, anger, and fear, becoming accustomed to only doing what was necessary to survive, leaving him with virtually no self-respect. After his encounter with the bishop, he developed into a sage and altruistic man. There are many examples of Valjean's heroism, perhaps spurred subconsciously by love and a sense of personal debt. Several of his selfless acts are highlighted with tragedy, conceivably accentuating the reader's connection with the storyline. The
In addition, he was jailed primarily because he was labelled a monster for his everyday actions, like his lack of emotion at Maman’s funeral, rather than the actual murder he committed. He lives out his purpose focused on the interactions around him and his self, which is significant because it shows how his satisfaction is found when his purpose is driven by his own motives, not a greater being. The courtroom and even the readers of the novel can label him as being “selfish,” but in reality, it is human nature and rational. This reveals how society looks down upon individual motives and personal choices if one does not conform for the “greater good.” Meursault responds to the Chaplain’s accusations, of how “he seemed so certain about everything...
15. What does Hugo say about the coming of Cosette into Valjean’s life? (Use your own words, not Hugo’s.) Ooops, my boo boo. Don’t bother to answer it.
I think johnny is the hero because he saved all of those kids who he could have let them die but he didn’t he sacrificed his life to save their lives but he did because he didn’t want them to die but it ended up backfiring on him and since he broke his back in the church it caused him to to stay in the hospital and he died after the rumble when they were visiting him but ponyboy is a hero to because he helped the kids to but he just got a big bruise on his back he did not end up like johnny did but he was sick all ready and and he also went and participated in the rumble and he has had the roughest week of his life ever and two of his friend have died.
A hero is one of many people. From firefighters to comic superheros, heros can be anything of anyone’s imagination. For instance such as Johnny from the outsiders, he was just a typical average teenager until he saved thouse kids. That is being a hero, taking action when it’s needed.
Intro Paragraph: What is a hero, really? Is a hero a perfect, no-fault person? The definition of a hero is “a person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities”. This essay will argue that Johnny from the outside is a hero. The first reason that Johnny is a hero is that Johnny supports and helps Ponyboy.
What is a hero? A hero is a person who is admired oridealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. Ponyboy, Darry, and Johnny are all heroic. Think about all of the great heroes in the world: Martin Luther King Jr, he showed numerous leadership qualities and Nelson Mandela, he was a peaceful and forgiving man. But then there is Oskar Schindler, a greedy, drunk, and unfaithful womanizer. Yet despite all of his flaws, he became the unlikely hero of over a thousand Jews. Now, how did such a man become a beloved hero? Well, I believe that this complicated man’s identity is made up of the people around him, where he lived, and his life experiences. The people that Oskar Schindler met contributed to his identity. When he bought his factory in Kraków, Poland, he hired an accountant by the name of Itzhak Stern. Stern was of Jewish faith and even though Schindler was a member of the Nazi Party,
"It is precisely of him that I wished to speak. Dispose of me as you please; but help me first to carry him home. I only ask that of you." Upon examination of Les Miserables, it is clearly evident that the elements of Forgiveness, Self Sacrifice, and Courage are only a few of the main themes Hugo wanted to develop.
“In sorting out my feelings and beliefs, there is, however, one piece of moral ground of which I am absolutely certain: if I were to be murdered I would not want my murderer executed. I would not want my death avenged. Especially by government--which can't be trusted to control its own bureaucrats or collect taxes equitably or fill a pothole, much less decide which of its citizens to kill.” ― Helen Prejean, Dead Man Walking: The Eyewitness Account of the Death Penalty That Sparked a National Debate. Sister Helen Prejean should be considered hero because she visited and ministered to people on death roge, she helped some of them believe in something greater than them. She is a hero also because she wrote books on her experiences in the prisons and how some men were innocent. No matter what happened to her she stuck with her faith and never stopped helping the people she felt needed it.
As the “man” of the house, Walter serves as both protagonist and antagonist of the play. Throughout the entirety story, Walter makes mistakes that hurt the family, but he ultimately becomes the hero. The plot shows how evolves as person and realizes the importance of family. Walter is the stereotypical mid-twentieth-century African-American male. Napoleon’s fame first rose when he was a leading role in restoring the port of Toulon from the British. In result, this gave him the reward of becoming a brigadier general. Then, he won himself a command position in Italy from his defense of the new regime. Napoleon rose even more in power when he took his French army to Northern Italy to crush the Sardinian and Austrian armies and when he finished the Treaty of Campo Formio in 1797. In result, he returned back home as a hero; however, he had to confront France’s final enemy, Britain. He then tried to beat Britain by attacking its interests in Egypt, which created “the first major Western European assault on the Ottoman Empire” – however Napoleon failed in the end. In addition to Napoleon’s
In the eyes of Valjean he is a kind, caring, and forgiving man. He has repented for his sins and changed his life. He is the epitome of change and reform. I chooses to live in a Valjean world because I believe in second chances and starting over. It is one of the pillars that makes life worth living. Imagine if we were never given a second chance at something, no do-overs, no starting over. All there is, is a lifetime of mistakes and heartache. That does not seem like a pleasant world to live in, yet some people think like that. I personally choose to forgive and forget, it makes life much more pleasurable to live in if there are no grudges being
. Valjean was sentenced to four years in prison, for attempting to steal a loaf of bread; the loaf of bread was not for himself but for his dearest sister and her seven kids. When Valjean was in jail, he attempted to escape prison four different times, which extended his sentence to 19 years in prison. Since Jean Valjean had served 19 years, he had time to learn how to read and write, he also had all the time to work out and get strong. As the years went by, Jean Valjean had served his sentence, when he was released his whole life was changed when, he was gave a yellow slip which stated Valjean was an ex-convict. From that day forward Valjean had to struggle and think how he could become an honest man. Jean one day came across the house of
Firstly, in Les Misérables Jean Valjean proved to be heroic, he stood up for the common good without hesitating. Valjean never did anything for recognition, instead he did it to help others who were in need. If everyone was heroic, people would be willing to sacrifice themselves for one another. This is good for the commonwealth because, if no one was willing to help each other out nothing would get accomplished. In the quote “Then without saying a word, he fell on his knees, and even before the crowd had time to utter a cry, he was under the cart” (60). This is when Jean Valjean steps in to save Fauchelevent because, Fauchelevent was getting by a cart. This shows heroism because, even if some people may not step in and help one another out.
Johnny is a hero because he cares about others. The first example of this is when he woke Ponyboy up, so he would not get in trouble for getting home too late. Johnny said, “ I went to sleep too, listening to you rattle on and on. You’d better get home” (49). Johnny cares about Ponyboy getting home on time and not being too late. Johnny does not want Pony to get in trouble with his brothers. Furthermore, here is another example of how Johnny is a caring person. Johnny rushes into a burning church to save kids he does not even know without hesitating. Pony watched him as he went, “He looked over his shoulder and saw that the door was blocked by flames, then pushed open the window and tossed out the nearest kid” (92). Johnny cares about the kids even though he has no clue who they are, and he ends up saving them.
