Parents all want what is best for their child. However, sometimes knowing what is best for them is not always easy. For instance, sports. Parents hate to see their child get hurt, so most sports are not “ideal”, but most also realize that their child may need sports to help their child develop motor skills and socialization skills. This makes things complicated at times. The one exception to this rule is that soccer is both non-violent and perfect for kids of all ages. There are also those who feel that soccer and motor skills go hand in hand.
Why Children Need Sports
Sports offer a lot of benefits to children of all ages. It can help them to become more social, learn how to follow rules, provides positive feedback, and teaches them that teamwork is a great thing, but it goes further than that. Children who play some type of sport also have better hand/eye coordination, better balance, less risk of being overweight, and more. This means that their motor skills are often accelerated, and they are able to do things faster than children who do not participate in sports.

It does not take them long to realize that when they move one foot forward, things happen. Therefore, soccer is a natural sport that does not feel as though they are having to “learn”. Soccer goes beyond the kicking a ball though. Some of the best moves in a soccer game require the player to use their knees and other body parts to move the ball forward. Any part of their body is allowed except for their hands. They have to think ahead of time and quickly, while balancing to kick, knee, or headbutt the ball to the other end of the field. By playing sports, children learn that they do not work alone, but they are part of a group that must cooperate to achieve a common goal. As the American Academy of Pediatrics says, sports teach children such skills
Allowing your son to play football is of the greatest assets to him, especially with learning teamwork skills. When playing football the athletes have to communicate with the coach especially your teammates. In the article, “7 Awesome Reasons Why Kids Should Play Football,” by Youth Football Online it states that, “Teamwork is a trait that these kids will need into teen and adulthood.” Youth Football Online also states, “ Youth football will also assist in the development of social skills, which is necessary to be successful in not just football but in life as well.” Another statement from the article is, “Set goals and work competitively towards them is what youth football should be all about.” It is not just a sport it prepares the youth for life after school.
America’s baseball diamonds, soccer fields, hockey rinks, and basketball courts have never been so busy with children. The number of kids involved in an organized sport is not what is so groundbreaking. It’s the way in which children are playing or how their parents are arranging for them to play that may be cause for concern (Ferguson). Much controversy surrounds youth sports with the biggest disagreements coming over parental involvement and the intensity of play. Although there are many benefits for team participation, there is a growing fear that the negatives are starting to outweigh the positives.
“See you a practice!” is a phrase that most people will say to their friends throughout childhood. Thirty-six million children in the United States play a sport. That is over half the children in the United States. However, even with that statistic, some children are still inside all day watching television or playing video games. Many parents do not enroll their children in a sport because they believe it will result in injury, or the child is going to feel left out. Some even believe that their child will be looked down upon if they are not as good as everyone else. They believe that if the child has more time on schoolwork it will raise their grades. But most children love to play outside and learn new sports. It is a part of a child’s nature to run around and have fun. Only some parents realize that children who play a sport can have more discipline than those who don’t. Sports can also give children experience working with others as a team as well as confidence in themselves. Children and teens who play sports are more likely to have higher confidence, be more disciplined, and work better with others.
There are many different reasons why including sports in a child’s life can help build them for their future. A few of the more obvious reasons include healthy weight, social skills, and self-discipline. Being a child that is in sports is hard because they have short attention spans and therefore having a child in sports will not only teach them great teamwork but it will also teach them to listen a follow instructions.
