Why We Should Have School Uniforms

With gang activity, strict dress codes, and bullying becoming more relevant, the idea of school uniforms crosses the mind of many school districts across the country. Even though it may stop students from expressing themselves it would make it easier for staff members to enforce these strict dress codes, reduce the amount of bullying, and overall make schools easier. Which is why schools should have uniforms.

Many schools each year are gradually turning towards the use of school uniforms. Statistics show that 5% of schools worldwide are starting to take use in having school uniforms. I believe that schools should have uniforms because it limits kids to getting bullied, parents don’t have to worry if their kids have name brand clothing or not, and the school doesn’t have to worry about kids dressing inappropriately.

One of the biggest worries in schools these days is bullying. Students are harassed physically, orally, and socially. “Roughly 160,000 children miss school daily due to the fear of attack and or intimidation by other students. Because everyone would be dressed the same, students would not be bullied because of their clothing. In addition, uniforms promote safety because if an intruder walked into school, it would be easier to spot them because they would not be wearing the uniform” (quale 3). The modern trend in harassment is cyberbullying. Often, the cause of bullying is from society being different for not wearing the right clothes. 'It is incredibly sad to hear how many youngsters are bullied or isolated for not having the same clothes or accessories as their classmates” (Jacob). If somebody looks wealthier, most people feel like they have a higher social status or more control. To the contrary, uniforms let students to learn on a more level playing field, with less decision about clothing

School uniforms do nothing to prevent bullying. Linne Hoofnagle’s article goes on to say that, “If we convince ourselves that placing limits on clothing choices will eliminate school bullying, we are kidding ourselves” (Hoofnagle). The idea that all the harassment that takes place in school is centered around student’s wardrobes is preposterous. Why should students be separated into groups depending on what brand their clothes are from? School uniforms give all students an equal chance to be labeled by their character and not by the price or brand of their attire. Contrary to popular belief school uniforms do not put a hindrance to a student’s individuality but encourages them to be more creative in showing it. Uniforms should be required in public schools considering they level the playing field, reinforce a sense of community, make schools safer, and pushes students to find other ways to show individuality.

Furthermore, school uniforms have the potential to make schools a whole lot safer. Think of it like this – if you were to see a student walk in wearing an ugly polo shirt and sweat pants, (s)he would probably be picked on just because of what (s)he is wearing. We as humans naturally judge on what we see first, and it’s usually their face / clothing. If school uniforms were implemented in many places, then it would eradicate school violence and students wouldn’t be indignant with each other based on what they wear. Also, since everyone on school grounds is wearing their uniform, it would be easy to pinpoint unwanted visitors and be one step ahead. Not to mention it would help kids with less money evade the bullying and teasing that they would usually receive, which brings me to my next point.

School uniforms should be required in every school. They are inexpensive compared to designer clothes that you traditionally see in schools. Uniforms lets you broadcast your personality but in a subtle way. I grew up wearing uniforms and it didn’t put limitations to my creativity. You’re still able to wear your regular clothes on weekends and you can still wear some of your clothes but just in modernization. This gives people a chance to know the real you.
