1. From William Styron’s story and the New York Times article by Benedict Carey, therapy -- specifically psychotherapy -- is most effective to patients who are suffering with depression. For Styron, therapy saved his intoxicated suicidal life as he attended sessions (Art therapy) at the hospital; talking to professionals about his past and suicidal actions made him become himself again.
2. If I were to support a close friend or family member who is suffering from depression, I would have her / him get help from psychotherapies. According to Styron’s story and articles from Carey and the American Psychological Association (http://www.apa.org/helpcenter/understanding-depression.aspx), psychotherapy is most effective due to the social ways the
Research has shown that depression is sometimes as debilitating as a serious physical illness and support groups help these patients tremendously. Participant evaluations of the focus groups expressed how they acknowledged how they were not alone in their experience and the group was extremely helpful and helped them share strategies that had helped them cope with depression (Coyne & Calarco ,1995). I recommend a support group for Griselda because she possibly could learn how to cope better with depression if she was able to talk and share openly with others with the same condition. It is sometimes best to ask for help from others that have experience with your situation.
It is important to support an individual in promoting their mental well-being and mental health. When offering support it is important to be patient, understanding and accepting. Talking to the individual can provide an insight into what they are going through and offering advice based on their current state of mind. Researching different mental health issues and offering resources to the individual can help them to develop new strategies to cope.
One way of treating depression is CBT, or Cognitive behaviour therapy, this helps the person to stop thinking unhelpful thoughts by ensuring they do enough enjoyable activities each day (The Australian Psychological Society Limited, 2016). Another way is IPT, or Interpersonal psychotherapy, this form of treatment is directed at the person’s relationships and the way they view others this is achieved by finding alternate ways to view these particular things (The Australian Psychological Society Limited, 2016). And one other way of dealing with depression is STPP, or Short-term psychodynamic psychotherapy, this targets a person’s feelings, desires and motivations, this stops the person from coming up with excuses as to why they can’t do something (The Australian Psychological Society Limited, 2016). Although these ways to help to manage and deal with depression, they do not prevent it, but studies have shown that with a healthy lifestyle, which includes, a healthy diet, regular exercise, and occasional relaxation can help prevent becoming depressed (WebMD, 2016). The government is trying to keep Australians of all ages safe, and free of depression, there are websites that have been created by the Australian Government, that give people the chance to contact professionals so that they can

2. Then we have psychotherapy or counseling, where you talk with a psychologist or psychiatrist about your problems. Usually you meet on an outpatient basis every week, however severe depression sometimes causes hospitalization where you have counseling sessions daily and also group peer sessions. My depression affected my daily task at work so I was mandated by my employer to attend counseling or I could choose to be fired. It’s difficult at first to open up about things but it was the best thing that ever happened to me. I felt a relief that someone understood my thought process and could give me suggestions and skills to use every day to help cope with the depression.
Cloe Madanes once said psychotherapy is the art of finding the angel of hope in the midst of terror, despair and madness.
Counseling and delivering services under the “best practice” should always be the goal of a practitioner. In a field such as counseling, where the lives of others are being impacted, making specific choices on how to deliver services, and making a choice to choose one form of therapy over another is pertinent to not only the successful rehabilitation of a client, but to also ensure the longevity of yourself as a practitioner and as a counselor. Practicing techniques or alternative forms of therapy which are based off of literature which is not evidenced-based can lead a practitioner to unethical practices which can eventually mean revocation of
The following essay is a case study of a client named John who is suffering from major depression and was sent to see me for treatment by his concerned wife. I will provide brief background information about John then further discuss interventions and strategies I believe can be applied in each session with my client in order to make John's life more manageable. In the essay, I will be writing as the therapist, and the sessions are based on a ten week period.

Psychotherapy can help people cure depression by talking about their feelings, and try to find the good, even in a bad situation. Jill S. Zimmerman Rutledge, from New Moon Girls magazine says, “ A person who is clinically depressed will feel a lot better when they find a professional who can help figure out a way to cope with the depressed feelings.” If the patient talks to someone, they can gain perspective about the difficult situation - (New Moon Girls issue March-April 2015). Psychotherapy can teach the patient how to distract themselves, or what they can do to get you out of the low mood. Jill Rutledge says, “Distraction can be an important coping skill for depressed feelings. To clarify, talk therapy can help with depression to get the feelings out in the open, but, for fear that therapy doesn’t work by itself, mixing talktherapy and drug therapy may help cure depression
Is depression a subject that people typically tend to brush aside? Rather than facing away from a serious issue that people suffer from in their daily lives, we should discuss the methods to help people with their struggle from depression. A common method to treat depression is the use of antidepressants. But are they effective? Do they cause more harm and danger than aid? Are there other methods that can provide greater improvement rather than a pill? Instead of using antidepressants there are other alternatives such as placebos and types of therapy that can be just as, or more effective than the use of prescription antidepressants.
When someone is depressed what they need to do the most is to get help. As an outsider it is helpful to support and encourage the person with depression to get therapy and to try and work through the depression. Also, the person with depression needs emotional support. When people with depression try to speak to a friend a lot of the time they feel like their friend does not understand what they are going through or feeling.
