For centuries, women in the U.S. military have had a tough time due to all the discrimination, harassment, and sexual assault just because our society’s fundamental belief is that going to war and protecting our homes is a man’s work. The discrimination and harassment occurs since women are entering an all-male dominated area, and are seen as “outsiders.” However, as a male in the AFROTC program, I have seen numerous well qualified women who can take charge and lead better than a lot of males can. In fact, the Wing Commander, the person in charge of the entire detachment for the AFROTC program at San Diego State University, is a female. It is time for women to deserve fair treatment in a non-hostile environment in order to further their careers on an equal foot with men since they have gone to extreme lengths in order to be seen as equal. Men have always been in charge of the military, holding all the high ranking positions and calling all the shots, but in recent decades, women have not only been able to achieve high commanding positions, but have also been allowed to fight on the front lines.
However, despite these continuing advancements, women still do not have the exact same rights guaranteed to males. Women do not have the same equal opportunity for promotions or careers, and they do not have the same equal opportunity to fight on the front lines or in Special Forces. They also have to worry about being sexually harassed by the same fellow servicemen that they fight
Men always believed that women cannot do everything like a guy or what men can do because they think women are not as strong as them, or they are too emotional. They want women to stay home cook, clean and take care of the kids. Until today there are some countries still believe that women have no rights to work or do anything. Now women are starting to fight for their rights and to show men that women can do anything men can. Strong women are empowered and role models to young women. One of the biggest inequalities women face is the different physical standards for being allowed into a Military Occupation Specialty (MOS). Over the past few years, there has been huge discussions when the topic of equality for women who have joined the military is being brought up. Being that gender equality is a big thing in the military now, I decided to chose this topic and discuss how I feel about it. According to the United States constitution, all men are created equal and this does not exclude women. One of the main things I learned is that equality for women in the military is a major issue. There should be no gender inequality in the United States military period. Most jobs are now open to women that were once allowed for only a man to do but when it comes to something such as the military, it should have always been that way No one should be told they can’t do something when it requires fighting for your country. Even back when men were drafted in the military, women should have been able to get drafted as well. You would think the military would take any and everybody that is willing to fight for his or her country simply because it would make our job easier as a whole. Frequently, women are stereotyped as feeble and incapable of doing certain things. Nevertheless, this should not be applied in any kind of career, particularly in the military.
Women were clerks or nurses. Eliminating any gender-based assignment restrictions or draft will improve our military's readiness and ability to recruit and retain the most effective and qualified people. The military needs lawyers, dentists, doctors and IT professionals. They also need intelligence analysts, police officers, and trained fighters women or not. Equality means the state of being equal, especially in status, rights and opportunities.
For decades, men have been the ones that were drafted into the army while the women had to fulfill their roles as housewives at home. Countless wars have passed before women were able to fight and serve for their country, such as but not limited to: the American Civil War, Spanish-American War, WWI, and WWII. It wasn’t until 1948 that congress passed the Women’s Armed Services Integration act which permitted women to officially serve in the military and receive veteran’s benefits. Still today, there are stereotypes about women and the fact that they should not have as much involvement in military roles, even after an act has been passed for that specific reason. It took a very long time to get women’s rights close to what men’s are, but it is still not perfectly equal. In the present day, their rights are still not the same. In Abigail Adam’s letter, dated 1776, to her husband she asked him to “remember the ladies” and to not put so much power in the hands of the husbands. It wasn’t until 1920 when the 19th amendment was added to the U.S. constitution saying that that women would not be denied the right to vote. But, women are still considered even today not as athletic or as smart as men. Only recently have women been allowed to fight in the front lines. Women
There are over 200,000 women serving in the military, yet they still do not get recognized like men do. Our nation’s military is all-volunteer and their intentions are to defend and protect our country’s freedom. So why is it that women join the military having the exact same mindset that all the men joining have but they do not get the same treatment? Women go through the same training and hardships in bootcamp and are qualified to do the same things as their male counterparts. However, females are not allowed to serve on front-line combat units, serve as special service soldiers, nor can they hold prestigious ranks. A majority of the inequality that is experienced is based on the idea that masculinity determines one’s toughness and success in combat. In the eyes of many, women play a support role to men and are there for a man’s needs, but that’s not the case at all.
When it comes to combat assignments and the needs of the military, men take precedence over all other considerations, including career prospects of female service members. Female military members have been encouraged to pursue opportunities and career enhancement within the armed forces, which limit them only to the needs and good of the service due to women being not as “similarly situated” as their male counterparts when it comes to strength or aggressiveness, and are not able to handle combat situations.
Women have been participating in the United States military since the Revolutionary War, where they were nurses, maids, cooks and even spies. They played vital roles in order to keep those fighting on the front lines healthier, and even a more important role in keeping commanding officers informed with private information stolen from the other side. Although the Revolutionary War took play in 1776, the first law to be passed that permanently stated that women have an official place in the military was in 1948, almost one hundred and seventy-two years later. Since that time there has been a lack of true growth when it comes to integration of females in the military. In 1994, a law was passed that tried to prohibit women from being assigned to ground combat units below the brigade level. Women are excluded from more then 25% of active combat roles within the military and only in 2013 was the ban lifted which was the final barrier to allowing women into all active roles. This has been a huge step in the direction for women being considered as being equal but there are still challenges that women face within the military. Ranging from sexual assault, discrimination, bullying, and other tactics, it is clear that for many, the military is still a “boys club.”
From the beginning of time the male and female have been expected to perform certain roles in society. Males have been expected to work and provide for their family while the female raises the children, cooks, cleans and keeps the house in order. Today many women have broken that tradition and are starting their careers and becoming more independent. It is worthwhile to reflect on the social and political advancements of women during the past one hundred years. Women now have the right to vote and to own property. They let their voices be heard instead of sitting silently in the kitchen. Women hold jobs previously restricted to men - police officer, firefighter, construction worker, doctor, truck driver and scientist. Obviously, this list is not all inclusive. Unfortunately, there is still one area that remains restricted to women. Women have assisted the military forces as far back as the Revolutionary War and yet there remains positions that women are excluded from. Gender discrimination against women is out of control across the world and seeps into many aspects of women 's lives. This discrimination harms women in two ways. First, women directly experience stressful events. The experience of sexism is so common that some research suggests women can experience one to two instances of everyday sexism. But women aren 't only harmed by sexism through the physical stress caused by others. They are harmed to the extent that they internalize and adopt these sexist attitudes that can manifest as poor self-concept. This negative self-concept often obvious on a subconscious level, as women and men will demonstrate automatic negative biases against women (Ferguson, 2013).
