When the French Third Estate stormed the Bastille in 1789, they envisioned a country in which they were no longer trodden upon by the First and Second Estates. They envisioned a nation where they had a major voice in politics and had a prominent role in the economy. By successfully overthrowing the French government and installing their own, they succeeded; albeit for only a short time. Little did they know that within a few decades, the same social hierarchy would be reinstalled during the Industrial Revolution, except the lower classes would be fighting for sanitation instead of bread. Over the course of the nineteenth century, various arguments emerged of how to improve the lives of European workers during the Industrial Revolution. Arguments
The Industrial Revolution has many pros and cons. It was a stepping stone for places all over the world. This lead to a more advanced and drastically changed world. Many things that changed caused harm to the world and many people think that it was a mistake for it to happen. Well, other people think that it was the best thing to happen to the world. It lead people out of the past and into the future. Let's start by talk about good things first.
The conditions in factories during the Industrial Revolution were very bad for the people during that time. The factories lacked many things that were beneficial to the people and the health department today would be all over it. Pay was a giant issue. There was very low pay. It could be as low as 1 shilling a day which would be worth a total of 35 cents today. These people who worked in the sweatshops did not have enough money to pay for themselves to live. They were very poor and could hardly afford anything. The workers had to work long, hard hours. They usually worked, anywhere from 5-16 hours a day working, depending on your age. Children had to work in the shops too if they were poor which was most of the population. You also worked when
Workers had a six to seven day workweek of ten to fourteen hours each day. During this time of revolution industrialists broke up work in factories into series on simple tasks to increase efficiency and production, a downfall of this was that industrial work became less skilled, repetitive and boring. An example of this would be machinery jobs in a factory, job satisfaction for workers become very low considering the fact that they would have to repeat the same task for hours on end. Low wages were very low so low that workers could not afford requirements for food, shelter and clothing. Everyone in a worker's family would have to work to make ends meet even when women and children were paid low wages.
The Industrial Revolution, a transition to manufacturing processes, began in Britain in the 18th century due to many factors such as land, labor, and capital. This started in the textile industry where cloth and clothing were being produced quickly and provided needs for the citizens with the help of Richard Arkwright's invention called the Water Frame. Even though more people were able to eat better food and wear better clothing, working conditions were horrendous. The average worker would spend a long time working in hostile environments in factories and coal mines. A lot of workers were seriously injured in accidents and killed. This major industrialization also led to new ways of thinking about the society. One of the many reform movements
Philosophers and politicians held opinions regarding what would happen to society as times began to change during the middle of the nineteenth century. The Second Industrial Revolution proved to be beneficial for society and introduced new technological advancements into the workplace, allowing for greater efficiency in factories. Society moved forward, progressing towards a new advanced industrial and technological era. However, the increased technological advancements and the effects of the Second Industrial Revolution also seemed to increase the gap between the different European classes. The working class found it harder to retain jobs since machines could accomplish tasks more efficiently, putting thousands of people out of work. Communist
The Industrial Revolution had many negative affects on people. Many people worked from home before the Revolution. Raw materials were delivered to people's cottages and the weavers would process the wool in their homes. This was an advantage for the workers because they would make their own schedules and work at their own pace; however, for these same reasons, they were disadvantages for business owners. The Industrial Revolution made it possible to move the jobs from cottages to factories where they business owners can oversee the workers and account for their time. Some people considered the factory jobs a blessing while others considered it a hardship. The work day was long, conditions were unsanitary and food was sparse.
