I determined the Fry readability of a tenth grade world history textbook, World History: Patterns of Interaction published by _____ . I performed the required steps and determined that the average readability level of this textbook is at the college level. Determining the readability of reading material, including textbooks, is vital before working with students. The reading level of students in a classroom can vary significantly. If textbooks are challenging to students reading above grade level level, the effect on below average readers can be deleterious. The average student will be spending significant academic energy focusing on decoding words and comprehending text rather than visualizing and making connections to the reading.
The baseline data was established using the Fountas & Pinnell Benchmark Assessment System (BAS). This test assesses reading comprehension through the process of students reading a text at the appropriate instructional reading level and answering comprehension questions. This assessment tool measures students' ability for accuracy, self correction, fluency, comprehension, and writing. An overall level score is given through a letter identification, A-Z. For the baseline data purpose the letters A-Z were numbered off 1-26 to give the students' scores an adequate numerical score. The assessment determines whether students exceed expectations, meet expectations, approaches expectations, or does not meet expectation. A third-grade student at the
In 1596- Abraham Ortelius took note that the coastlines of the continents seemed to be too fitting together. He initiated a theory that stated that the continents were probably joined at one point in time and were torn apart between Europe and Africa. In the year of 1912, Alfred Wegener stated that the continents were once joined in a supercontinent called Pangea.

As the classical period emerged, religion as well as other cultural influences had been some of the main aspects of much of how history was shaped during this time period. Many religions had sprung up during this time period such as Judaism, which was a monotheistic religion and had developed with the codification of the Hebrew scriptures. This religion reflected the cultures of different regions such as Mesopotamia. The Jewish states were conquered by the Babylonians, Assyrians, and the Romans during this time period as well. he most fundamental responsibility of schools is teaching students to read. Indeed, the future success of all students hinges upon their ability to become proficient readers. Recent scientific studies have allowed us to understand more than ever before how literacy develops, why some children have difficulty, and what constitutes best instructional practice. Scientists now estimate that fully 95 percent of all children can be taught to read. Yet, in spite of all our knowledge, statistics reveal an alarming prevalence of struggling and poor readers that is not limited to any one segment of society:
When my teacher picked the book, it made me struggle because I didn’t understand any of the words or what was happening. If teachers pick books and the book is hard to understand, how can students improve their reading skills if it’s way past the student’s reading level? When students pick, they can pick at their own level or a little higher to help improve understanding and reading abilities. It’s suppose to help with the students understanding of the book and not to make the students
Failure is a part of life. While many see failure as a negative thing, I have started to see it as a situation that can make you a better person. Failure drives me to never make that mistake again. I first realized this when I took my first AP class and AP exam and received a score of 2. This journey all started sophomore year when I took AP World History. I quickly learned that I needed to actually read and take notes to be able to succeed in the class. It took a few poor grades on essays and tests for me to understand this. Despite this new revelation, I still struggled in the class. When it came time to start reviewing and preparing for the exam, I put an immense amount of effort, but not as hard as I should’ve been. Exam day came and

At this point in history, worldly events are whizzing by at an accelerated pace and the 18th century reveals some tumultuous moments that shaped world history in the Americas. At this point South American was settled by Europeans who were still fighting over boundaries and they shared a craving for power, hence the turbulent conditions fostered by Europeans lead to instabilities in South America. Spain and Portugal claimed large South American land masses, while other nations like France and England made attempts to infiltrate sections for themselves which caused further unrest. European quarrels also seeped and influenced the political atmosphere of South America, for example the French revolution interfered with the governing plans of Spain.
Before using a social studies textbook, a deep analysis of its contents will be required. How the book covers the topics in comparison to the definition of, social studies bring forth the relevance of the book in effective planning and instruction. Before this assignment I never knew anything about Asian history until I got to this class and received this assignment. I can’t believe how much Asian history influenced the way we as Americans look at history now. In Steward Gordon’s When Asia Was The World, I found the story of Xuanzang very interesting. Xuanzang was a Buddhist monk who traveled all over to learn more about Buddhism until he became confused and decided to go to the center of Buddhism, along the way he faced many difficulties, he decided to go back to China and share what he had learned.
Readability is a useful tool used in various circumstances to estimate the difficulty level of a written material for the targeted readers. Most of the common readability calculations will include things such as the lexical density, length of a sentence/word, and the number of syllabus. Even though readability tool is successful in giving a guideline to people such as teachers, librarians, editors, and writers, it still has numerous disadvantages. Since readability tool only calculates the surface of a text, it fails to reflect the interactive nature between the readers and the authors as well as ignoring the knowledge, interest and motivation of the readers. By analysing and comparing two texts: ‘The making of Americans’ (1925) by Gertrude Stein, and ‘Ceramic Science for the Potter’ (1972) by W.G.
