Having a present interest in vintage and retro fashion led me towards the idea of a vintage themed art piece. I contemplated a range of ideas and after some compromise, I decided to work with the theme ‘vintage’ by devising ideas around crafting everyday objects into a piece of art. Vintage items, including, classic books, cameras, type-writers, cushions, buttons, prints, wall paper, etc. were all considered. I wanted to expand on my knowledge and talents, therefore, I decided on sewing a stylised and imaginative artwork combined with the use of appropriate, complimenting materials.
The following design was inspired by the subsequent excerpts from Elise de Wolfe’s book, A House in Good Taste. Elise de Wolfe was one of the first recognized interior decorators. In her book she discusses many decorating tips, successes, and mistrials she has discovered with experience. While the book was written in 1913 and design styles have changed drastically since then, I have taken many of her ideas and have adapted them to fit a more modern design style. I chose to adapt her ideas from the chapter A Light, Gay Dining Room due to the fact that a lot of de Wolfe’s hardest projects, yet biggest successes have been with dining rooms.

This is evident in the magnificent artwork employed in the interior design of the mansion, perhaps a representation of the great European palaces. The highly embellished textured walls are symptomatic of the Gothic revival. By and large, it is worth noting that the Westerfeld mansion was equally influenced by industrial revolution owing to cheap mass-production of various household items. The evidence of bronze and brass artifacts demonstrate the large-scale production of electric doorbells, decorative doors, and cabinets among others.

The American Georgian style ruled American design from about 1714 to 1830. The Georgian style was inspired by English and European styles of the time, relied on classical elements, and took inspiration from the Italian Renaissance. Georgian design was located mainly along the eastern seaboard, where “the old styles gradually gave way to the Georgian, and there came for the first time a large degree of uniformity to American architecture” (Wertenbaker, 1943, p. 66). Craftsmanship was a big part of early American life, and people liked to show off their quality homes, eventually displaying their stations by “maintaining codes of dress, speech, and behavior” (Architectural Style Guide). Georgian American design had many different influences while adapting to suit the settlers needs. There are several beautiful examples of this style still intact today.
I love interior design. I spend hours marking pages in home decorating magazines, and I log more hours per week on Pinterest than I do on Facebook. You'd think with that level of passion that I would live in a house worthy of being featured on a lifestyle blog. Sadly, I am the sort of person who turns DIY into DI-oh my. I'm addicted to thrift stores. Every time I see a blog post that features a "simple" tutorial to refinish an old dresser or turn a picture frame into an inspiration board, I'm able to convince myself that the most recent battered piece of furniture to catch my eye is a worthwhile investment. That's how I ended up buying one of the ugliest chairs I've ever seen. The price was right and I had so many hopes for that chair.

Once you’re inside, a radio station playing today’s hits, rather than elevator music. Sounds emit softly over the speakers in the main entrance gallery, just loud enough though to be heard throughout the adjoining rooms. The interior is clean enough, no dust or dirt to effect the art pieces scattered around the space. Standing in the main entry, the doorways are decorated in a grand sense with crown molding and Roman style archways over the doorframes. The walls are a soft, pastel green that pair well with the white trim and dark flooring. The color is perfect and doesn’t steal the show from the artwork hanging.
